I’m in desperate need of some help on starting the Personal Essay. I’m typically bad at writing these broad, personal type of essays, and I am totally stumped as to where I should begin. The 4th topic (describing an influential fictional character/historical figure) is the most appealing because it seems like it would be the most interesting to write and to read.

hmmm, have you seen a movie or read a book where you really admire one of the characters?

This might help: think of something you would love to write about (either relating to your life or your passion) that really excites you.

Now, go back to the common app topics and find a way to relate that subject to one of the questions.

I think what’s getting you is the notoriously bland and general topics you’re supposed to write about. But I think colleges will like it if you write about something really interesting and specific, which branches off the common app topics in an interesting way!

I read on another part of CC about the cafeteria test (or whatever it’s called). If you dropped your essay in your high school cafeteria, someone picking it up and reading it should know it’s yours.

Hmm, why don’t you go with the “topic of your choice” option? It gives you so much more freedom. Also, why do you think this essay is supposed to be broad? It actually has to be very specific and straightforward. Vague essays are always impersonal.
