help with suggestions on extracurricular activities

Hello,

I am a new parent member here, and was hoping to get some help. Please suggest some extracurricular activities that my daughter can take up that can help boost her chances with the college admission process. She is in 3rd grade now, and is not interested in any sport (soccer, swimming etc). Appreciate all recommendations,

Thank you!

You’ve got to be kidding. Third grade?

Let her pursue her interests. That’s the advice everyone here will give you.

Or, perhaps, you’re a ■■■■■. Because you’ve got to be kidding.

Do not feed the ■■■■■!

You must, immediately, sign your child up for preSAT classes, a foreign language (preferably Chinese or Arabic), math tutoring, music lessons on bassoon, bagpipe or didgeridoo, pottery, and some sort of physical activity (rock climbing or golf work well for nonsports type kids). Skip the kids level lessons; throw her immediately into adult classes so that the challenge pushes her to her full potential. She should begin blogging immediately - it’s a little late in the game but you might be able to turn that into a “feature” if you spin it right. For the summer, soup kitchen volunteering for now (25-30 hours a week is a good start) but start looking into programs in the third world by the time she’s a 4th grader. An internship with a local dental office might also be a good idea. Invest in one of those DNA testing kits just in case you discover some sort of “ethnic hook” in your family background.

This is funny. Made me chuckle out loud. Don’t like to encourage ■■■■■ posts but it was funny.

I would add that you need to get tutors right away – one for math and science and one for reading and writing. Also, pick out what college you want her to attend and start making large donations.

Third grade? You’re coming here just a little late aren’t you? I mean, the critical pre-school decision was made long ago and now D is probably already at an elementary school that leads to a certain middle school that leads to a certain high school and there’s not a thing we can do to help you at this point, sorry.

3rd grade is way too late to start gymnastics or ballet and expect to have any level of success. It’s pretty late for swimming and soccer too so D’s probably wise to skip those.

Possibly she can start a robotics club if you run out and get her every Lego set available TODAY.

Also, get this book immediately: [The Neurotic Parent’s Guide to College Admissions: Strategies for Helicoptering, Hot-housing & Micromanaging: J.D. Rothman: 9780983459415: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Neurotic-Parents-Guide-College-Admissions/dp/098345941X)

I’m really, really hoping someone is terribly board and is having a bit of fun. The very sad thing is there are honestly people worried about steering their kids in the third grade. So while this may be a joke, the real third grade tiger moms have already contracted with a named college counselor.

Im assuming OP has been working on expanding her child’s language skills, especially if she didn’t get a head start in utero.

Well-played, CC’ers.

^ home on a pre-blizzard Saturday night, what else are we gonna do?
