My son is 14 and will be heading into HS next fall. He is a classically trained pianist and would love to do a summer piano performance program. He is finishing CM level 9 this year and has previously attended the Idyllwild summer piano workshop and loved it. The only restriction is that it has to begin in late July, which eliminates so many programs! Does anyone know of any rigorous and well respected residential piano programs that begin in late July/August? We know about BUTI Tanglewood and already applied there. Trying to think of some backup options just in case!
My son is a Jazz Studies major so Im not super versed in classical…he has a friend who did summer work at Ithaca…he, himself, also enjoyed his time at Eastman so I would look into what they have, it isnt all jazz. He also did NYU, Berklee, and North Texas so you can snoop around those sites as well. I know alot of the kids he auditioned with at UMiami had done a two week residential there. Good luck
Have you looked at Interlochen? It looks like they offer several piano intensives/programs.
My son attended years ago (not piano) and loved the experience.
There are so many programs. But most start in early July or even late June. For a young musician the chamber music camps are really fun but I think they start earlier (Kinhaven and Greenwood)
I did, but sadly the piano programs start well before July. Unfortunately, he is busy until late July. Will check their dates again just in case!
Thank you! He is taking a class that only ends in late July
He can definitely wait until next year when he can do full programs. Does interlochen have a later program? They will have more younger kids than a program like buti.
You might also check out Colburn. Late July and August is a challenge in general, though.
Atlantic Music Festival has a precollege program and their session 2 runs July 21 to August 10, but I don’t know if that’s late enough.

There’s a chamber music camp called Point Counterpoint that has 2-week sessions through the summer. I don’t know the level of playing, but session 4 is August 3-16 for ages 11-17.

I just went through my lists to look for more and found a few:
Kinhaven junior session, 8/9 - 24, for students currently in 4th to 8th grade
New England Music Camp chamber music intensive: 7/28 - 8/11, ages 14-19
Luzerne senior session: 7/21 - 8/17, ages 13-18
thank you so much!
Will look into all of these, huge thank you!
And one more thought–we live in CA, so if any other ones come to mind that are closer to us, that would work really well! We are open to traveling of course too.
Sun Valley Music Festival is in Idaho, runs later in the summer, and I believe they have piano students involved as well (my son went last year for chamber music).
My S went to NEMC for their chamber music program. It was not rigorous and the level was not high. It was fun though! Kinhaven is amazing, for some reason I thought that rising 9th graders went to senior session, there were a few there last summer when my S24 was there. It is a wonderful place, cant say enough about it
