Help with travel plans to Princeton

Hello all, trying to set up travel to visit Princeton in a couple of weeks. My D is traveling on her own, so I’m looking for the easiest way for her to catch some sort of ground transportation to Princeton from the airport. What are your recommendations for which airport to fly into? I know Newark Liberty is the closest, but what do you think about Philidelphia, JFK and La Guardia? Any help his appreciated!

I suggest flying into Newark. You can catch a train from Newark Aprt. to Princeton Junction and cab it from there. (You’ll have to change trains at Newark Penn Station) You can check the schedule here: www.njtransit.com

You can also fly into Phila and take the train from the airport to the 30th Street station in Philadelphia, then NJ Transit to Trenton and on to Princeton. This is probably a little shorter distance, but may require two transfers.

I think there’s a spur route that connections Princeton with the main Princeton Junction stations.

Search on the web for NJ TRANSIT and SEPTA

Actually you can go to Newark and take the train all the way to Princeton - you change at Princeton Junction to the train called the Dinky which takes you to the base of campus. My D does it all the time. She flies into Newark because flights from SFO to Newark on Continental can be very very inexpensive, think around $250.

La Guardia and JFK are harder. From JFK you need to take a cab to Penn Station in NYC. Cab is $40 flat fee, then take the train to Princeton.

I have heard Philadelphia is easier, but have never tried it…

Thanks all for your prompt responses! Trying to balance cost and ease of travel and I’m unfamiliar with the area, looks like we’ll go either the Philadelphia or Newark routes.

nj transit now has a stop right at newark airport. as noted you get out at PJ station and take the dinky which is a one car train that shuttles to the town of Princeton. My memory says it is all walking distance after that and since I moved away at age 8 I would guess it’s not far.

Absolutely, do Newark, then NJTransit (Northeast Corridor Line) right from the AirTrain at the airport, directly to PRinceton Junction, then Dinky (2 car spur train) right into Princeton campus. It will cost you no more than $15 from airport into Princeton each way! (maybe a bit less) It will take hours and $$$more to do this from any other airport. Good luck! (I live just outside of Princeton and take the train all the time, including to the airport.)

Son usually uses the Newark airport, but 2 weeks ago he did the Philly one. Flew Southwest, used Ding! He needed 1 additional transfer than the Newark one but it ended up being a little cheaper because the airline ticket was so cheap. Used the Dinky on both and you can use Amtrak vs. Septa (or both) to Philly. Ticket to Newark $15, $25-35 to Philly.

We have used American, Delta and Southwest (Phil). His ticket from RDU (Raleigh,NC) to Philly on Ding! was $29. Pay about $120-160 RT from Newark to RDU on American.

This was the weekend with the big snowstorm. He was able to get on time and for some reason all his friends’ flights were cancelled and flew out days later. I think it was because they were flying out of Newark while he was flying out of Philly. It just as easily could have been the other way around though. He got lucky.

just saw Alu posting!!! The $29 was one way, so with with taxes it was $39 times 2= $78. You got a great price Alu for SFO to EWR.

BTW, the $250 was roundtrip:)

Definitely for april hosting I’d fly into EWR, its a bit more complicated from philly and she wont know her way around yet. Also, coming from newark into princeton is better as the dinky mirrors the trains from new york, and not the ones from trenton. It’s also easier to tell where to go from princeton junction when coming in from Newark.

Thanks all!

Newark is by far the most straight forward airport now because there is an easy NJ Transit stop there now. If you find flights to Philadelphia are significantly less expensive, the route from there is a little more complicated but not impossible. I’d try to book morning flights so she’s hitting these trains during daytime hours. It’s not hard to make the connection from Septa to NJ Transit at Trenton but you wouldn’t want her doing it alone at night. It’s fine during the day or evening commuter hours. Newark is just easier. One big train to catch and then the dinky. Forget JFK and LGA.

I really appreciate everybody’s help, I bought tickets today to Newark. In the end I decided to go along as we have FA to discuss at a couple of schools. The tickets were actually a pretty good deal because we’re flying out of a smaller airport close to where we live, rather than the big city one two hours away.

Princeton looks like a bear for motels, any suggestions?

Princeton has official travel partners listed under visiting campus. Homewood Suites just opened and also there is Hampton Inn.

Newark is the easiest. Three trains - inter-terminal+NJ transit+dinky. cost $14.50. Travel time ~ 2 hrs

PHL is not bad. Four trains - R1-to 30th + R7 to Trenton+NJ transit+dinky. Cost $11.00. Travel time ~ 3 hrs

from PHL and EWR they also have buses the cost is about $30. Travel time ~ 1.5 hrs

good luck

The dinky stops right on the edge of campus - all is within walking distance from there. There are always kids hanging out near the station since it’s next to the Wa (WaWa convenience store) where everyone goes for snacks and sundries. Kids are helpful and will point you in the right direction towards Frist and admissions (try to print off a map of the campus before you go).

We’ve stayed numerous times at the Hampton Inn, but it’s not within walking distance. Courtyard is closer, but still not around the corner. Hotels on or near Nassau St are right on the edge of campus but can be pricey. I’d call a few and tell them that you’re doing a campus visit - some will give you a reduced rate for this. Others might have a shuttle.
