Rigorous classes and good grades or be very good at sports. Key to every school.

It’s mainly high GPA, SAT scores, and taking rigorous classes (AP and stuff).

Are you CA resident or not?

Take as many challenging courses available to your school. Max out GPA and SAT or ACT. Quality over quantity when it comes to extra-curricular activities. It’s better to have less activities with longer time spans over more activities with shorter time spans. They want to see dedication and commitment, not trying to do everything to impress them.

I had a handful of extra-curricular activities but one very meaningful and extensive extra-curricular activity. It was for three out of four years of high school and it was the topic of one of the personal statements.

And just to reiterate for emphasis, UCs are a numbers game: max out GPA and SAT/ACT. UCLA does have a ‘holistic’ approach to accepting candidates, but you won’t be considered if you have a crap GPA and good extra-curricular activities. Better to have good GPA and decent extra-curricular activities.

I got accepted, but to be honest, my grades and test scores rank probably amongst the lowest. 3.74 GPA! Personally, I believe it was my personal statements that made my application, well, acceptable. However, I did have extracurriculars and a ton of volunteering, too. Everyone’s saying “high grades, SAT scores, blah,” but, with all due respect, those students were surprisingly rejected at my high school. This is why I’m a bit confused… Just wish yourself luck, really =X
