Help!

I have no clue where to put this thread but thought I’d start here since I’m most familiar with you guys. I have a question for a paper I’m writing for school and I feel so confused. If you are writing a research paper and finding all sorts of sources that reference other items in their research - do you cite what they said in their paper, or do you look up their sources and get the info directly from the origin? I haven’t written a paper like this in 20 years and I’m scratching my head.

Ideally, you track down the originals that were cited. In a pinch (the original is inaccessible to you), you write something like “Jones, as cited by Smith, bla bla bla”. There should even be a specific model for the format needed in whatever style book your field normally uses.

But do remember that this is just for things that really are inaccessible. Do it too often, and your professor’s head will probably explode.

Hang in there!

thank you!
