Help!!!

I am an African American high school junior in MD. I am currently enrolled in the full IB Diploma (aka 6 really hard classes in 11th and 12th grade). I screwed up freshman and sophmore year but took most honors and pre-IB classes.

Freshman year 2.28
Sophmore year 2.71

If I were to bust my behind and get a 3.71+ junior and senior year. With a 31 or 32 ACT score, 450 volunteer hours at a hospital, and 5 clubs 11th and 12th grade, great recs, and great essay. (Probably going to travel to Africa next summer and help the sick and poor in case that helps). Do i have a chance to getting into Duke. By the way I plan on going to Med School and doing PreMed at Duke. I know my stats are low but will the turn around count for anything.

It will count for something, but not enough i don’t think

So, coupla things->

 1. Duke does not have a PreMed degree program the way some schools do - you major in anything you want and make sure to get the courses you need to successfully apply to medical school. The Health Professions Advising Center can help with that.
 2. A 2.28 followed by a 2.71 your first two years is going to be awfully hard to overcome. If your grades make a dramatic turn for the better and your test scores back up your assertion that the first two years were “screwed up,” certainly Duke will look at the rest of your profile. It may also be a case that to get to your dream school, wherever that may be, you will need to go someplace else first and then consider transferring if your first year or two of college courses continue to demonstrate the upward trend. Hope that helps!

I think you need a lot of help… but keep working hard…

Well, a 3.71 or better in all 4 years does not even come close to securing a spot at duke… If you managed to get a 4.0 your junior and senior years in the hardest courses possible and get a 2350+ on the new SAT with amazing essays and recommendations then you would have a chance…
