Ok …so I need to make a decision between attending Tufts or Lehigh …I visited both …and I loved both of the campuses (i don’t know if that’s the plural!) …I really like Tufts’ atmosphere and location, although the school spirit really bothers me! …can you give me some tips, please?

We have a lot of school spirit, we just don’t go to sports games.

This is really a personal decision for you to make. None of us can tell you which college would suit you more because we’re not you. Figure out what your priorities are in terms of what you want in your college, and then figure out which one meets those preferences best.

I agree that fit should be a personal decision. I think Lehigh has a lot to offer, esp. in regard to their engineering and business programs. In terms of campus life, the greek system is huge. If that’s something you’re open to, then great, but if not, it’s definitely something to consider.
I wouldn’t worry as much about school spirit and sports, because there’s a lot of time in between those big game events. I think it’s more the people you meet and friends you make that become more important.

Also, nothing against South Bethlehem, but once you’ve made the rounds of freshman-year parties and you’re ready to branch out a bit, it would be very nice to have Boston at your fingertips–

School spirit at Tufts comes in the ways students get together for political or social campus events or movements; for extracurriculars like intramural sports, plays, art shows, publications, etc. We have great Homecoming parties and Spring Fling weekend.

If you want school spirit of the jock, Greek kind, go to Lehigh. Otherwise, pick Tufts. Plus, if being in Lehigh Valley sounds more exciting to you than one of the biggest cities in America, well, that’s up to you!

Thanks to all of your who answered (or tried to) …
Here’s another question ----How’s the dating scene at Tufts?

You should really read other threads on this forum because many questions have already been answered. ;)

I’ll be brief, then: freshman year people don’t really date; they feel the scene out, date around, meeting new friends and potential girl/boyfriends; people break-up with their “high school sweethearts”, etc. By junior and especially senior year I’d say a slim majority is in serious long-term relationships.

Yeah, I think Lola gave a pretty good rundown of the social scene here, when it comes to relationships. As far as the social scene in general, Tufts is probably right between a really boring place like Brandeis and a too-fratty scene like BC or such.

Reasons I did not go to Lehigh (reasons I did not APPLY to Lehigh, lol):

I didn’t feel it was selective enough. They accept nearly half of applicants; three really unintelligent alcoholic girls from the grade above me went there, and I sometimes would judge schools by the people I knew who went there, lol.

Their hill is far worse than our hill. I would have to go to physical therapy if I live there.

I was told that there’s nothing to do besides go to frats. I’m fine with parties, but I’d like something else to choose from.

Tufts programs in what I wanted to study were better.

Was told Bethlehem was the middle of nowhere, and I like the proximity of Boston and the ease with which I can use mass transit and get home to NJ.

That’s just me though!

Just as a response to a few of those points as a Lehigh student…

The admission rate for the incoming class at Lehigh is 31%. It’s not the most difficult school to get into by any means, but it is no joke either. I sometimes question how some of the people I meet were accepted, but that’s usually not the case in the engineering program.

The hill is really not a big deal. I’m in horrible shape and I haven’t had an instance of cardiac arrest while walking to class yet. That’s a pretty stupid reason to not attend a school.

This is pretty much true. The Greek scene dominates Lehigh and as a Freshman with no car, the social options can be pretty abysmal.

I can’t argue with this either. Definitely do not choose Lehigh over Tufts if you’re looking to major in something else other than engineering/business.

Your definition of “in the middle of nowhere” is pretty ridiculous considering Lehigh is within 1-1.5 hours of both NYC and Philly. Even the city of Bethlehem has 70,000+ people and the Lehigh Valley area has 650,000+ people.

You can’t go wrong at either school, honestly. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into with Lehigh’s social scene.
