I am at CMU right now and will be coming in the fall semester. It turns out the SIM card that I brought from China is not working in the US. Does anyone have any idea as to where I could get a SIM card in Pittsburgh?

Also, I need to have my glasses fixed as it has been damaged due to “sports injury”.

I think that Cingular is the only company that uses SIM cards in the US. The whole model of US cell service is completely different than that of most other countries. Are you sure it’s possible to use your phone in the states?

First place I know of that might be able to fix your glasses is on Murray in Squirrel Hill, a block or two from Forbes (toward the Giant Eagle/Waterfront).

T-Mobile and Cingular are the two major GSM cell phone providers in the US. Are you aware that the US GSM phones have different bands than the rest of the world? So you need a cell phone that is 4-band if you want to use it in the US and China. Otherwise, you will at least need a phone that supports US bands (850 MHz and 1900 MHz). Obviously, you’ll need the SIM card to go with such a phone.

I have no idea where to get your glasses fixed. Ask around campus maybe?

I think there is no problem with my phone. The seller “promised” that I could use it in the US. btw, how and where can I select the provider and get the card?

ATT and T mobile are the GSM carriers here in the US

I have used my quad band phone in China (at least shanghai and beijing) so if your phone is quad band it should not have a problem with either t mobile or cingular/att - meaning you could get a prepaid sim from either carrier and it should work if your phone is unlocked.

if it is not quad band then you should be aware that cingular/ATT is heavily dependent on the 850mhz band and T mobile is heavily dependent on the 1900mhz band (though they both use others). The easiest thing to do would be to walk into the nearest t mobile or cingular/ATT wireless store and ask for a prepaid sim - or better yet just ask them to put in a live sim to see if it works first then get a prepaid one. I think they sell them at some drug stores and mall kiosks also but I am not sure.

if you want 3g then you’ll have to use cingular - though I’m not sure if pittsburgh has 3g coverage yet
