Help

Ok, I am currently in college and this is not for me. I am doing this for a friend in a sticky situation. She is 19 and wants to go to college online. Her father will not let her do it, he refuses to sign any paperwork or give any information to help her do this, she does not want to emancipate herself to be able to go to school. Is there a way around this so she can go to school with out having to get her father’s information?

Your friend is a legal adult. If she can pay for her studies on her own, she doesn’t have to ask her parents for anything. If she needs to apply for financial aid, she will need them to supply their financial information.

Your friend needs to look at the numbers. Can she afford this on her own? If not, then she needs to talk to her parents about how much help they are willing and able to provide for her education, and under what conditions. Some parents can’t pay anything, some won’t pay anything, and others will pay only in certain circumstances.

Wishing both of you all the best.

BTW…

A student cannot just emancipate herself for education purposes. It sounds like she wants this parental info because she wants to apply for financial aid. Many online classes are rather expensive, and her dad may not think she is self-disciplined enough to “stick with it.”

But, she is over 18, and if she wants to pay for it herself, she doesn’t need her dad’s permission.
