My sister is a full time FLVS 8th grade student. She is picking her courses now and this is her 4 year plan. Any thoughts?
9th Grade:
English 1 Honors
Geometry Honors
Biology Honors
World History Honors
AP Human Geography
Spanish 1
10th Grade:
English 2 Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
Chemistry Honors and Physics Honors
United States History Honors
Spanish 2
11th Grade:
AP English Language
PreCalculus Honors
AP Biology
AP United States History
Journalism
Spanish 3 Honors
12th Grade:
AP English Literature
AP Statistics
Anatomy and Physiology Honors
AP Government and AP Micro
AP Macro and Personal Fitness
Spanish for Spanish Speakers
9th : ok (except for foreign language, which should be honors, but FLVS seems to have gotten rid of the Honors options )
For better rigor,I’d recommend she take an elective of her choice such as journalism1 or Leadership, or Art or Latin or French, plus a CS-related course such as Digital Design 1 OR
if she’s into tech-y stuff, Information Technology + Fondations of web design (which, if taken alongside Information Technology, will allow her to take User-interface Design next year),
10th: She should either take World History Honors, or APUSH. (Students would take either Honors US history or APUSH, not both). If she thinks she can handle APUSH she should take it.
She should also take HOPE or Fitness (won’t ount for college but required for graduation) + another class (depending on previous choices and how much rigor she’s looking for: either User/Interface Design, or Level2 of her second foreign language or another art class or AP Psych or journalism or leadership. If she can’t get to level 4H or AP in Spanish, having 3 years of 1 language and 2 years of another one typically “offsets” the problem for most universities.)
11th:
At this point, she should take 2 dual enrollment classes in order to be competitive for public universities.
AP English Language
PreCalculus Honors
AP Biology
Spanish 3 Honors
==> KEEP
AP United States History => already taken in 10th. Take a freshman history course, preferably a topics class or a seminar, at a local community college;
Journalism => take journalism 101 or communication 101 at a local community college
1 elective or art class, either through FLVS or through a local community college
12th Grade:
AP English Literature => better take a Freshman or sophomore class at a community college
AP Statistics => better take calculus (FLVS offers Honors Calc, AP Calc AB, and AP Calc BC, so she should be able to pick her pace and level)
Anatomy and Physiology Honors => depending on what has been taken before, take AP CS A or further CS classes or a science class at a community college
AP Government(taken in the Spring, keep period open in the Fall for the extra, writing intensive class called “college applications”)
AP Micro AP Macro
Personal Fitness => taken freshman year
Spanish for Spanish Speakers => take College Spanish 3 at a local community college as this class is meant for native speakers
Here is an updated plan based on your advice:
9th Grade:
English 1 Honors
Geometry Honors
Biology Honors
World History Honors
AP Human Geography
Digital Design 1
10th Grade:
English 2 Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
Chemistry Honors and Physics Honors
AP United States History
HOPE
11th Grade:
AP English Language
PreCalculus Honors
AP Biology
AP United States History
Journalism- at CC
Spanish 1 and 2- at CC
12th Grade:
Comp 1 and Comp 2- at CC
Calculus Honors
Biology 1 and A&P 1- at CC
AP Government
AP Macro and AP Micro
Spanish 3 and Spanish 4- at CC
^ good catch - she should take another AP social science in the 11th grade.
Also, HOPE is not an academic class. She may want it to balance out the workload for apush but it’s typically taken on top of a normal schedule.
@MYOS1634 As an FLVS Full Time student, you can only take 6 classes with no chance for an override. The only way to fit in more classes would be to finish a first set of classes in one semester and register for another set of classes the next semester. @foliontai. That was just a typo.
Ok. it’s very easy to finish HOPE in a few months, most students finish it over the summer. (Is she allowed to take classes in the summer or is that extra?)
I wasn’t sure if you lived in florida. In that case yes your sister can take summer courses for free (and you’re eligible for free classes at the community college - each would have a list For dual enrollment students.) Seven units, including five academic units, per semester, would be a rigorous schedule, and this would mean two summer classes. Upper level foreign language is supposed to be taken at the community college.
Hope is very easy.
