Helping soon to be college graduate

We are hiring seven hundred temps in customer service. Some Erik more then likely wind up being offered a full time position in the end… But it takes a certain kind if person to do a job like that where they have to talk to people all day.

Wow! Mass hiring.

Much better to hear about than mass firings.

Daughter was at a job fair to hire 800 - she sent out several applications and she is sending out more. We shall hopefully hear from someone. If not, then she’ll keep trying.

I wanted to put a short update here. Didn’t want to touch the “50% of grads are unemployed” with a ten foot pole.

Anyways, D is working very hard at finding a job. And how things have changed. Flew to the remote location yesterday. Loved the job and especially loved the rotation training program. This would be her #1 choice if they make an offer. She thought the interview went well. They had her meet with many people yesterday and tour many of their departments. HR person said that he was going to check with who she saw and would check her references and to see if everything was good. I’m hoping that was a good sign.

Another interview today. Would be her second choice now. This is the 3rd interview there and she’s a little tired of it. Just wants them to make a decision. Very stressful for her.

Also the boyfriend has been very supportive. Told her that he would miss her but that if she received an offer from her #1 choice that she has to take it. Was very excited with the company and the opportunity. He knows what a great opportunity it would be and how great of a place to start her career.

So no job offers yet. Still waiting and hoping. Wish for something before graduation in 3 weeks.

Thanks for the update. Hoping for the best for your daughter.

deb922, it’s heartening to read about your D’s experience – even if she doesn’t get exactly what she wants, it sounds like she is gaining in confidence, which is the most important thing.

My D is graduating in a couple of weeks. I hope she finds her way too. I’m trying to stay out of her way, except for looking into whatever contacts I have in her field. I think sometimes unasked for advice can be undermining, so I’m really trying to keep my mouth shut except when asked!

Another update. Had her interview today and they made a promise to hire her. This department is waiting for approval (seeking approval to hire 2 or 3 new people, she is their #1 choice) and will extend a formal offer as soon as they have it.

She is so happy. The interview yesterday is still #1 and this offer is a very close #2. Since it wasn’t a formal offer it gives company #1 time to extend an offer. She told the company yesterday that she had another interview today and that it was very promising. But if they can’t she has a job she would be very very happy at.

Is offer #2 near boyfriend? I’m always impressed when a friend, classmate or coworker wants the best for the other person, even if they lose something from it.

The offer she had today is in the city where her school is and so yes it is near the boyfriend. The job interview she has yesterday would not be near the boyfriend at all. In fact it’s an 18mo rotational trainee program where you switch locations every 6 months. That is the job she really liked.

Boyfriend told her that although he would love for her to be in the city that he is in, that if she receives an offer from the rotational program she has to take it. It is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity in a company that so many want to work in. He was so excited for her to have that job interview and really went on and on about the great things this company does.

Those kinds of jobs (#1) usually have a lot of management potential. Sounds like the better opportunity.

I haven’t read the entire thread so I apologize if this has been touched on:

When I was young, I also looked and seemed much much younger than I was. (I still do, but now it’s a blessing. :)) It was very difficult to get people to take me seriously. There are two things you might suggest:

Take your D to a full-service department store and have them style her hair, teach her to apply make up, and help her select three or four professional outfits. Having that help may give her added confidence, which will add to her “gravitas.”

When she does a mock interview, get it videotaped and show it to her. That, more than anything, will permit her to see how she comes across and will let her see what she needs to do to change. That’s a very different learning experience than having someone tell you what you need to do.

And good luck to you, to her, and to all the other unemployed Class of 2012s. I know this is hard.

And kudos to the BF for encouraging her to take the rotational training program if she gets it. He might be a keeper!!

Deb- Congrats!! Great news for your daughter. What a relief! My S1 still finishing up projects and papers and has made no more efforts in the job search area - as far as I know. Home in three weeks.
