"Hence"

How to use “hence” properly?

I felt ill, hence I didn’t go to school.

instert it in the place where you’d have normally written ‘so’ (ex: I felt ill, so I didn’t go to school).

it’s a conjunctive adverb

it’s virtually synonymous with therefore, thus, and the like.

don’t use it like “so.”

so is a coordinating conjunction and only requires a preceding comma.

hence, like all conjunctive adverbs, is punctuated like so:

…;hence,

…,hence,

at the beginning: hence,
the end: …,hence (rare)
