here we go again: shooting at high school in Washington

“Saintfan, that’s what bothered me about the ‘they’re ignorant bubbas’ comment. As you said, we don’t know if the family was part of the ‘guns and ammo’ crowd.”

The ignorant bubba comment is about allowing a 3 yo to have access to a gun.

My gosh, the bubba comment was made directly under my comment about the 3 year old being given a gun as a christmas present - which Pizzagirl quoted in her post. Was the context of Pizzagirls comment really too difficult to understand?

It was VERY clear that the bubba comment was about the case of the 3 year old, not the school shooting.

No need to get indignant. PGirl elaborated and has made it clear.

A horrifying turn of events . . . the shooter texted lunch time invitations to the victims to meet at the same table

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/27/us/washington-school-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

I would go with stupid rather than ignorant. Although he could be both. Some very educated people make stupid decisions and some very ignorant people have a lot of common sense.

@saintfan I was listening to KIRO FM Radio stream and a few moments ago and the commentators repeated what you said about the ‘invitations.’ Jaylen planned to execute his relatives and friends. Frightening. Where does a 14-year old mind get such terrible animus?

The cousin in serious condition (shot in jaw) has now posted that he forgives Jaylen. Hmmmm. I would be surprised if someone doesn’t know something about what might have set this off. There is no incentive to tell though. If there was some serious reason known to the cousin he would be unlikely to say what it was.

The gun, they are now saying, was legally purchased by a family member at Cabelas but didn’t specifically say dad. Still could be. The living have to live together still so they may smooth it over. I wouldn’t see the tribal members trying to press some kind of negligence case against the gun owner. It’s hard to say who would even have standing between tribal jurisdiction and the city or county. I have no idea how the law would work. I don’t know if Zoe and Gia were tribal members or not. It is so sad for them to lose a child. I can’t imagine.

No words.

6.12.14 Use of firearms by children under 14 years.

  1. Unless a child is accompanied by a person having charge or custody of the child or under the
supervision of a qualified firearms safety instructor who has been authorized by the parent or
guardian, it is unlawful for a parent, guardian, or other person having charge of custody of a minor
child under the age of 14 years to permit the minor child to carry or use in public any firearms.
  2. “Public places” means any place to which the public, Tribal licensees or invitees, or any group of
    substantial size has access.
  3. Any parent, guardian, or other person having charge or custody of a minor child under the age of 14
years violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a Class A offense.

Jaylen received his hunting rifle for his 14th birthday it appears. I have no idea how these laws interface with WA state laws since he took the gun off the reservation.

http://www.tulaliptribes-nsn.gov/Portals/0/pdf/49_law_and_order.pdf

A conflict of Tribal law and state/local law can be sticky. Remember the kerfluffle years ago when a Washington state judge released a couple of wayward teenagers to a “tribal leader” to face justice on the reservation? Even a few tribe members were not happy about it.

I had a discussion with a friend who graduated from Marysville Pilchuck back in the 80s and still has family in the town (we live about 30 miles away). She says that, based on a few years ago when her nephews were in the school, there were metal detectors. She is not sure how the gun got into the school.

She also knows the Fryberg and Hatch families, but so did most people in town of 16,000 back then. The town grew substantially since the late 1990s when Seattle area real estate prices went way up. It has always been a commuter town for Boeing Everett, but now is a commuter town for some brave souls coming farther south.

As of yesterday, the teacher, Megan Silberger, was not sure if she had grabbed the gun or just Jaylen Fryberg’s arm. It turns out it was neither. Those of us who know wrestlers doubted from the beginning that she could have had any influence on the events.

Hatch may have forgiven his cousin, but one gathers that his wound, as bad as it is, does not involve being mentally impaired for the rest of his life.

It is certainly better for him, going forward, if he can genuinely forgive. I’m sure that his days of struggle with what happened are far from over, poor kid.

A 4th student has died.
They also broadcast the Marysville game on the radio.

So sad - I was just looking for the thread to post

That’s terrible.

Ugh.

Sadness doesn’t accurately describe my feelings. I am angry. I am sad for the parents’ grief, but I am angry that once again an insecure individual chose to share his disappointment and hurt feelings with society by maiming others.

This situation I find even more troubling/sad/maddening/??? than most (I hat that I can say that) in that one doesn’t look back and say “of course he would do this”. The other recent shootings that have been in the news there was mental illness involved an/or real outward signs of imbalance and obsession. I know the investigators are still sorting through electronic communications and whatnot, but I’m wondering if the “why” will be swept under the rug. The families of the young women have lost so much - I just can’t even imagine - and have less ties to the shooter. I wonder if they will pursue it more after their immediate grief and loss has settled some.

Another student has died.
