Here's something I don't get

According to CollegeBoard, in the entering class …

7% of the entering class had a B to B+ average?! That’s a bit surprising. I thought HYP students were supposed to be straight Acers.

You really cannot generalize it that way… HYP admits students who add to their diversity either by intellectual promise, or by involvement in other activities of their passion…

Right, but the capability for such intellectual promise must somehow be proven, and a student with a B-B+ average does not do that. They may have had high SAT/ACT scores but these tests simply measure SAT/ACT-taking ability and are therefore not a reliant measure of intellectual promise, whereas one’s non-SAT/ACT academic performance, which involves a much greater variety of subjects and test types, acts as a better indicator.

that’s absolutely not true. you might have been able to make that case (no capability for intellectual promise…) had there it been something like a C-C+ average, but B-B+ is perfectly respectable. realize that this group of students is primarily composed of athletes (who are subject to slightly lower admissions standards due to their heavy commitment to athletics) and students from top schools. a 3.4 at exeter, for example, is nothing to laugh at–the fact that their gpa happens to be low-ish doesn’t mean that they have no capacity for intellectual promise. you’re making the faulty assumption that those students with lower gpas only got in based on test scores.

If you look at the ‘Results threads’, you’ll see some kids who were admitted to top schools with B-B+ average and low SAT scores.
I was also surprised to see such people, but when I looked at their ECs it was all clear; those kids had many national-level superb accomplishments in some field, in the cases I’ve seen, I think they were into science and had amazing internships, science awards etc. etc.
And next to their “low” SAT scores or GPAs (still 600s mostly), some of them added “I never had time to study for those” which is completely understandable.
So the athletes are not the only ones admitted with low numbers ;)

It could be that they took a few kids with a special talent in one area even though they fail in another. A few Cs and Ds can really hurt you GPA. Like a great poet with Ds and Cs in math and sciences.

Affirmative action recruits, star athletes, and long-time legacies, anyone?

I’m just pleased that my senior year grades have put me EXACTLY at 3.75.

or they go to a top prep school that has hard courses.
