Hey guys! What is my shot at getting into a decent grad school?

Hey Guys!

So I started my college years pretty well but during sophomore year I had some personal issues going on which led to depression which in turn led to low grades. Right now I’m a junior majoring in biology with a 2.98 GPA right now, but I think I can pull it up to above 3ish. I’ve done research in human fungal diseases in a prestigious research institute with a world renowned PI for 4 years now and have placed in the top 3 in the international science fair. We are gonna try to publish the research I’m working on right now in Cell magazine again sometimes this coming spring/summer. I’m studying really hard for the GRE and have confidence that I will do well. I’m not the world’s best test taker, but I am very hard working at things I am passionate about, I can work independently and collaborate with others and very innovative and creative such as at research.

This is my situation right now, do I have a shot at a decent graduate school?

Your feedback is much appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, it definitely sounds as though you’d have a decent chance, especially your PI uses his connections on your behalf ( I have heard of this happening, though I personally did not know anyone with any influence).

You have to have a very good letter from your research advisor and your GRE scores need to be strong to mitigate the poor GPA. You might need to start out in a Masters program and then apply to a Ph.D. program when you prove yourself with a strong academic performance.

If you can get three strong letters of rec, a great SoP and a good GRE maybe.
