The shows that bother me now are the instant makeovers: go out for dinner, come home to a complete renovation. Besides not believing the work can actually all be done in that time - that they can make it look done, as set decorators have done since silent films - what really gets me is the idea that renovation is quick and easy, as though you should expect gangs of workers and designers to descend on your kitchen and knock it out over a few days. It will take months.

I miss the decorating shows, too.

Nrdsb4 I completely agree with the “we want all the bell’s and whistles on a limited budget” mentality. The other thing that I find annoying is when the house is what they are looking for, in the right price range and the people complain about something very easily changed. Folks it is not that hard to paint a wall or replace a light fixture!

Do any of you guys remember the House Hunters show filmed in Destin, FLA with the couple who were looking at condos for themselves and their brown poodle named “Mr. Poo”? Seriously? A brown dog named “Mr. Poo?!” LOL. The woman kept saying that she never cooked, but wanted a pretty kitchen, and the condo had to have 24 hour room service, since “I don’t cook.” Oh my, all I could think was that her fiance needed to wake up and run away, fast as he could. I mean, she had sunglasses on that Mr. Poo. He was the only one who had the sense to look embarrassed. :D

^^^ Yea, I remember that one; and yes, we (H and I were watching together) wondered what kind of person would be with her!

^ I have to say I missed that episode, but I hope they show it again!

Well, there is a show on now featuring a couple looking in Hawaii. When asked about the fact that the couple has differing tastes, the wife said, “Well, I’m the boss.”

Wow.

Ok, things that make you wonder how genuine these shows are :

I recently watched the Property Brothers’ newer show Buying and Selling. They took a couple in Austin who had recently married (and thus needed more space) through the process of getting their house ready to sell, choosing a new house, and in fact selling the rehabbed home. The husband was a really nice looking guy with a young child from a previous relationship, and his new wife was just drop dead GORGEOUS. The thing that was funny about the show was that when he was a bachelor, he’d put his washer and dryer in his master closet, and the whole show they all kidded him about it. The new house they found featured a laundry room accessed through a door leading from the master closet, so he was thrilled, and it was again a point of humor.

Okay, so last night I was watching The Closer. In the final moments, deputy chief Brenda Leigh Johnson is informing one of the villains that she will be prosecuting her for felony assault because she had paid a lab to falsify the HIV results of her star actor in her porn film company and the actor had unknowingly infected 11 other actresses as a result. She started throwing down photos of the victims, calling them out one by one by name. “Bambi!” “Tiffany!” “Taylor!” “Bethany!” All of a sudden I see the photo of the gorgeous wife from the HGTV show land on the table. “Melissa!” I even hit the rewind button to be sure, and yep, it was the beautiful wife.

Talk about a bit part. But clearly the woman is an aspiring actress. So was the * Buying and Selling* show just a vehicle for the wife to get TV exposure? Was the show even remotely real?

Hmmmmmm…

Just saw this little article on annoying things people say on House Hunters:

http://guyism.com/entertainment/tv/house-hunters-annoying-moments.html

I was watching House Hunters re-runs the other night and a woman kept harping on 2 things:

Hardwood floors: She DOESN’T want hardwood floors! “I’m kind of disappointed this family room is not all carpet.” “Could we cover the wood floors in the dining room with carpet?” “Oh, I’m happy! This house is practically all carpet!”

Built in bookshelves/desks/other features: “I hate built ins. They are so tacky.”

I guess this woman has never considered the concept of resale. Shakes head…

My love affair with HGTV is starting to fade. I still watch it – it’s my default channel – but I’m not head over heels anymore.

And Nicole Curtis annoys the cr@p out of me.

Is she the Rehab Addict? Why does she annoy you? I just started watching her shows.

Yes, Nicole is the lady hosting Rehab Addict. I learned a lot from the show, but not many people can perform like her.

I love that she refurbishes old homes in the Detroit area, her home area. (and close to me) Also like the simplicity of her renovations.

^^^^I’d love to have her figure. On one show she said people are always asking her how she gets her arms so toned, and she responded, “from scrubbing filthy bathtubs!”

My nephew and his fiance are going to be on Property Virgins. Filming is next week, then again in mid April and final filming a month later. I’ll anxious to get the real scoop on how it’s done. They are house hunting now and have a few “possibles” picked out already.

@patsmom, you’ll have to give us the scoop! I’m sure it’s very different from what it appears on the show.

Wow, patsmom, please let us know how it goes and when the show will air.

One new show I like is the Brian Boitano Project.

Nicole Curtis bothers me because she’s bossy. ;)) Oh wait, that’s another thread. ;)

She bothers me because I think she’s “performing” too much during her show. There’s an opening piece that they show every program, where she is prying a piece of wood off a stair rail, and she shrieks, “WHY would anyone cover this up?!” It doesn’t feel real to me; it feels as if she’s doing it so big and so loud and so shrieky just for the cameras.

I do appreciate that she is renovating old houses. But I wish she’d tone it down a bit.

How exciting Patsmom!

One of my pet peeves on the buying a house shows - besides open concept, is the home office. I just don’t get it. Every couple always seems to need to have one. How many people really need to have a home office?

Maybe it’s just me but I find it ridiculous.

I don’t think I know anyone anymore who doesn’t work from home even if it’s just after hours work. My fiance and I both work on evenings and weekends at home. Even if we didn’t, I would want a “home office” over having my computer in the living room or a bedroom. I want it out of sight. I don’t want to be anywhere near the computer when fiance is playing video games. I don’t want the TV on while I am paying bills. But, I axed all the “open concept” houses we saw off our list… I do not like that at all, but it seems like most people do.

I’m surprised HGTV doesn’t make people sign something agreeing not to tell everyone it’s staged.
