hi in what cases our essay is considered plagiarism ?

Hi, I have a question.

I have read an essay on a prep book. In the essay about the demise of democracy, the writer begins with “Rumors about the death of democracy have been greatly exaggerated”.

The writer has obviously used a quotation of Mark Twain “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated”. Her beginning catchs the reader, because the reader would recognize the familiar saying.

But I wonder if this is considered plagiarism. She has used Mark Twain’s words.

In what cases our essay will be considered plagiarism ? Will our scores be cancelled ?

How should we quote other’s word when writing SAT essay ?
Do we have to say “ABC once said”, or write a footnote below our essay ?

I don’t believe that changing someone else’s words is considered plagiarism in the context of taking the SAT essay.

The reader will spend no more than a few minutes on your essay and will probably not even catch it in the first place.

So how to quote someone. Do we have to mention the name?

I think you can mention the name, your example holds. I mean your example is more effective.

No, it wouldn’t matter.

yeah, it doesn’t matter.
