"Hidden" Academic Merit based Scholarships

I cannot seem to find any “published” Merit based academic scholarships on some NCAA D-III schools: Bates, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Pomona, Trinity, Williams, or Middlebury. I know they exist, but how can I find out about them?

I don’t have time to research all of these for you. However, I did one quick search at Williams because my sister-in-law went to Williams and received a big scholarship there. She went at age 16 (graduated two years early) and is much younger than I am! I know the name of the scholarship and so did a “search” on Williams’ site of that name which is the Tyng Scholarship. Indeed, it came right up. Here is what it said:

“Does Williams offer need-based scholarships that are distinctive?
Yes. Tyng Scholarships are the most prestigious Williams awards. They are designed to meet a student’s demonstrated need, primarily with Tyng Scholarship assistance, for each year at Williams. Further assistance is available for three years of graduate or professional school or the equivalent of summer study or research. Since all applicants who qualify for aid are considered as candidates for the Tyng, no additional application is required. This Scholarship is awarded annually to 7-8 especially talented students.”

I know that my sister-in-law’s scholarship paid for graduate school at Berkeley where she received her doctorate (then became a professor at another college, though has just “retired” and gave up her tenure there at age 37). It was a great deal as it paid for grad school! I haven’t heard too many scholarships that do that.

I would suggest checking the various merit scholarships discussion we have had on this precise board. Brandeis is often cited as one of the most generous school in distributing merit aid -for some this should read buying students. I believe that some of the other schools have been discussed. For instance, Bowdoin fell in a special category labeled “undecipherable.”

Good luck!

If you remove National Merit Scholarships from the mix, and remove those scholarship where need has to be found (see Tyng above) , I don’t think you’ll find any “solely based on merit scholarships” where institutional money is being awarded at Bates, Midd, Williams, Pomona , or Bowdoin (see “undecipherable” Bowdoin discussion on the Need v. Merit thread Xiggi mentioned).

Brandeis and Trinity both offer merit . Trinity’s program is new for the Class of 2010 and is very generous. A couple of CC folks received the scholarship award this year.

The Tyng scholarship at Williams is need-based - non-financial aid students are not considered.

Bowdoin offered to replace any loans w/grants for NMF students, and also offered DD a one-time $3000 (?) stipend to be used for study abroad / research over the summer / or to replace summer earnings amount if doing internship - or something like that. I think it was called a Faculty Scholars Award - but my memory grows dim… ;)
