My daughter did great on the ACT main section, a 31 - top two percent. But her ACT writing score was about the 25th percentile. Most of her college choices seem to ask for the ACT with writing.
I know with the SAT, the writing score is largely ignored by most schools. What about for the ACT? That 31 on the main ACt is FAR superior to her SAT score and to any standardized test she has ever taken for that matter, so we are going to send the ACT in. And because it was so great for her, we were planning on not taking any more tests. But now I am starting to worry about the low writing score. Should I worry, not worry? To put this in the proper framework, my daughter is likely to apply to schools with admissions difficulty along the lines of Miami of Ohio, College of Charleston, Elon, Providence, and some fallbacks that are a bit easier than those to get into. Thanks for any and all advice.

I would probably take it one more time with a little bit more prep for writing. However, if it doesn’t go up, don’t worry about it. Most colleges just want the writing portion of the ACT to balance out the SAT (which includes a writing portion). Your daughter’s ACT score is outstanding and you should be proud. I would kill for a score like that. My final advice is that if it’s really bothering you that much, let her take it again. If not, just send it in and see what happens. I’ll bet my bottom dollar that it won’t hurt her chances.
