High School Academic Requirements

I’m a rising junior that is thinking about applying to Pitt for nursing. In senior year I was thinking about taking Statistics instead of calc because I’ll be taking a course called college calc this year instead. However, when I checked the academic requirements for nursing it says Pitt requires 4 units of math and stat falls under the academic electives category. http://www.oafa.pitt.edu/pdf/HSRequirements.pdf
Does this mean that stat doesn’t count as a math unit?

That’s what it sounds like to me. If anything is unclear contact admissions and ask.

Yes, it means that statistics does not count as math. However, if you will have already completed calculus, they may consider that you have done the equivalent of four units of math. Did you start high school math in middle school? Did you get high school credits from your rmiddle school algebra class? Check your transcript and see if that is the case. You may already have four units of math and not realize it.

I also see that for arts/science and business schools, calculus is listed as one of the math units. My S will take up to pre-calculus in HS. Is calculus a requirement?

@mommyrocks I took algebra 1 and geometry in middle school, but I’m not sure if they count towards high school credit. Do you know if that means I’ve fulfilled the math req?

Ask your high school for a copy of your transcript. If the middle school math courses counted toward high school credits, they will show up there on the transcript.

Ask your high school for a copy of your transcript. If the middle school math courses counted toward high school credits, they will show up there on the transcript. My daughter’s middle school Algebra and Spanish courses show up on her high school transcript. She was able to take AP Calculus BC as a junior, and did not take a math course her senior year. The Algebra from middle school counted as her 4th year-long math credit in high school for purposes of college admissions.

@mommyrocks thank you!
