High School Class of 2014

I got a b+ in geometry as well, simply because my teacher was incompetent, and didn’t grade any of our projects, which were supposed to be weighted heavily. Plus she never graded tests either…

@ATPmolecule: I wasn’t goofing around. My final grade was a 89.95 in the class, where an A- would be 90.00. Due to random placement, I got stuck in a math class with juniors who had taken two years of Algebra (1A and 1B). I was the top student in the class, so my teacher graded my work a lot harder than the other students. Overall, for the class, I received an A, but I got a B+ one semester.

I’m not making excuses, and I probably could have done better, but I always had an A at that class until she graded our midterms.

Oh ok, atleast its just one semester! lol i understand…god i miss geometry and the triangles!

The only thing I really didn’t like about that class was the fact that I spent about half a period each day helping people.

Next year I take Algebra II/Trig, and I’m glad that they finally offer math honors classes. Even though the text books are huge.

How often did you guys use your lockers?

I HATE geometry. My teacher was horrrrrrrrible. You would raise your hand the whole class to ask a question and he wouldn’t answer. He would look at you and then turn away, as if ignoring you. He would teach let’s say subject A in class, give subject B for homework and on tests would put subjects A, B and C (that’s right, something you have never seen before in your life).
I managed a mere 92 in his Geo Hon. class and surprisingly was one of the few 5-6 who got an A.
I’m looking forward to Alegbra 2/Trig hon, I can’t take shapes anymore.

As to the lockers question, just to put my backpack in for lunch :P

I think you guys will enjoy Algebra 2/Trig. It was, by far, the most interesting math class I’ve taken thus far. Especially the trig stuff–really fascinating.

ATPmolecule, we told you our class standings. What’s yours?

Im already done with Algebra 2, did it along with geometry! It was fun though…but my school doesn’t rank until later, but I’m either 1/19 or 2/19, i didn’t realize the seriousness of high school last year till late, so i did get beat in some classes but i dominated others.

I’ve already taken Algebra II, and I loved it. (Due to the way my school works, all the Honor kids [ONLY Honors, which is annoying and odd] have to take Algebra II right after Algebra I. It’s not the smartest idea, because only 4 kids got an A on our second semester final.) Trigonometry is actually fun (surprisingly) and not hard to understand, though it can be a slight shock when it’s first introduced to you.

Anyone have tips for Geometry, seeing that I’m taking that in the Fall?

(Oh, and rank, since that was asked by someone I think: 1/486 [approximate])

Tips for Geometry: Memorize your formulas, pay attention, and practice problems. It’s not a very difficult subject. Also, I find it a little strange that you learned trig before learning geometry. Seems kind of counterintuitive.

I finished algebra 2 honors and it was pretty cool, especially since it was an honors class- we learned quite a bit of precalc. My school doesn’t rank because it’s a school of overachievers ( many kids have 4.0’s with tons of APs) and we also don’t weight gpa’s so it’d be kind of pointless :/

Math isn’t my strength, does anyone have any tips on how I can prepare? Anything online I can do? I really need to get an A, and sadly I can’t depend on my teacher to teach well lol.

Maybe it was my teacher, but I really loved geometry. Unlike algebra II and precalc, you can’t really make many ‘stupid mistakes’ like dropping a negative sign or writing the wrong number. I found proofs and all the visuals really fun, and I was pretty good at geometry. I think it really depends on your class and teachers.

@jereved: To prepare, you can always check out books from your library on whatever mAth you’ll be learning this fall; read a chapter a couple times over each day, do a couple problems, etc. This will give you a rough idea of what you’ll learn in class and it will make it much easier to pick up. Math is a lot about practice; even if a person isn’t very good at critical thinking, as long as you can recognize how to do different types of problems, you can still do well. But if course, all the practice should teach you how to approach problems in a smarter, more efficient way.

And my school doesn’t seem to rank as well. I wish it did though; i think ranking would inspire more motivation/competition out of me, since i’d know where i really stand. I know plenty of intelligent people who’re definitely better in physics/chem/sciences/computer sciences, but my English/spanish/math grades might counter that, so it’s really difficult to guess where I stand. =/

(on iPod, pardon any typos or strange typing, thanks)

@upinflight yea I really hated Geometry, probably because of my teacher. Now answer me something: how in the world can you like proofs? I found them to be the most useless and annoying thing i’d ever seen in math.
The kids in regular Geometry were having such a hard time that the teacher just gave up teaching proofs for them lol.

As to rank, my school also does’t rank, but, there are at least 10 kids in my class who have around a 4.0 GPA but my average is higher than theirs. Therefore, I guess i’m top 5% (?) Surprisingly, in a class of over 110, there were like 23 people with averages above a 90, but at least half of them had one or multiple B’s.

Proofs were fun to me because I was given a chance to look at something that seemed to have no solution to most people, and I could unravel the problem so quickly that I had an answer before anyone else ever could.

@rokr: I found it really satisfying when you are able to tie together all those postulates/theorems and prove something? Lol. Sort of like what ATPmolecule said; although I can’t say i was the fastest/first to get the answer. Also, unlike normally with algebra II and other math, you have to be think through what you do (not just mechanics and using formulas), so i actually felt pretty good when i solved a proof.

In my grade, we have a little over 750 students, but around 100 of them are magnet students (which i feel most competition from, since we take more vigorous courses). I’d say like 28 people from the magnet have a GPA over 90%, and maybe 20 people have straight A’s/4.0. I’m in the 20 people who have straight A’s, but many of the people who were in the 90%+ range got like 1 really high B the entire year (but managed to get an A on the final, so colleges just see the 4.0 semester grades). So comparing with the magnet, I could say I’m in the top 20%, but I don’t have any other information to see where I am in that 20%.

Also, i feel kind of stupid because I didn’t apply for the accelerated computer science track for the 2nd semester of freshman year… and it pretty much puts you a semester ahead in computer science than the other people (which allows you to fit another course in your schedule later on). Most of highly competitive people took this course, and many of them got high B’s.

What kind of computers do you guys use? Did your academics act as a determining factor in the type of computer you own? Are any of you technology centric?

To start: I own a Mac, and like every Mac user, I love it to death. It’s a lovely machine for school, I honestly don’t know how I fared with a PC for the past few years. I’m also ridiculously interested in computers/mobile tech. I’m also fascinated with the business side of Silicon Valley, start-ups, venture-capitalism, etc.

Let me start by saying, I LOVE technology. With that in mind, Macs are just too expensive for me, but I’m perfectly happy with Dell. I don’t have to worry about file conversions with my PC-centric school, and I haven’t had a single issue. Though a better battery would be nice :)

Right now, I’ve got a HP. As soon as I go off to college, I want to invest in a Mac. Preferably sooner. My HP has excellent storage, but I still can’t wait to use a Mac.

Speaking of college, I’m excited. I know it’s premature, but I keep hearing my friends talk about how excited they are to be leaving. It’s just getting me excited for chance.

how many of you guys volunteered this summer?

also, are you guys doing any internships or activities or just chilling at home?
