High School Class of 2014

“Find X” bra.

so I completely rewrote my uchicago essay, and it still sucks, but it sucks less than it did…yay :)

I’m really introverted, so whenever someone says that about a college I know it’s a good place for me. :)

I love UChicago for its purportedly nerdy and academic atmosphere. Yum!

…and I’m pretty sure I can stir up a good party or two if adcoms let me in

The UChicago atmosphere does seem really great. I love the academicness of it, but I think they have fun too.

I think academicness is fun.

^I agree, but I meant other things.

Had my first interview today (Carleton College). He said he was very impressed, and apparently I conveyed a passion that isn’t often seen in uber smart kids (for music). I wouldn’t really say I’m passionate so much as I love to do it, but I guess my body language conveyed otherwise.

success

I’m interviewing at Case Western at the end of the month. I’m actually kind of excited. I picked the earliest time of the day because I figured they’d be less bored/tired at that time…I don’t know if that’s a good strategy or not.

Just to add a dissenting opinion, I think an all-academic environment is inferior because it restricts flexibility. At a school with strong academic and social cultures, one can certainly immerse oneself in nerdiness nearly 24/7–but one can also explore other lifestyles. Therefore, a school with only one culture or the other is intrinsically worse than a school that offers both (at least to someone willing to expand his/her horizons).

Thankfully, Chicago’s “nerd culture” seems to be vastly overblown on these forums. The university’s recent advertisement efforts have attracted classes that are less self-selective and therefore less strictly nerdy. I’m sure current Chicago students have plenty of both kinds of fun.

I don’t consider myself a nerd, really…I’m just profoundly shy and academic culture is the only culture in which I don’t feel awkward and out of my element.
Also, “social” stuff seems to involve drinking more often than not, and I have an unusually strong aversion to drinking because my childhood was screwed up by my mother’s alcoholism.

Recently I’ve sort of been bothered by the prepackaged intellectualism a lot of colleges (especially LACs) seem to have. I feels like it loses some of its awesomeness when they advertise it in their catalogs. The academic culture becomes less spontaneous and organic.
I actually sort of preferred the environmental at my high school, where intellectual discussions were relatively uncommon and you had to work to find them and when the conversation was done you were all like, “Why the hell did we just let that happen?”
Maybe I’m too much of a hipster.

You Only Drink Once

Oh I don’t want to drink. I can’t stand the taste of beer. I also have low tolerance for alcohol. On Passover last year, I drank too much wine and got so sick, but it was only like 2-3 cups. I basically was hungover without the drunk part. And I definitely will not be around anyone who smokes. The smell of cigarette smoke makes me sick. I can’t even imagine trying it.

@lldm21- If you’re into music, why not try for St Olaf (in the same town as Carleton)?

What does PG stand for under the honors section?

Post-graduate.
The other letter abbreviations refer to college years, for transfer applicants.

Just met some wonderful people who will help me with my CA essay and the 1000 supplements I have to do! :D

So there’s no place to attach a resume on the Common App, and no additional info box, correct?

anyone know when the new US News rankings coming out?

There’s no place to attach a resume, but there’s an Additional Information box in the Writing section.
