High School Class of 2014

What I really love about CC is how there are other people who actually like/are excited for school. Refreshing!

schooldigger is not reliable at all…

My school is ranked 753rd of 1112 New York public high schools?

Last time I checked my schools website, we were top 100 if not 50 of NYC public High schools… By the NYCDOE themselves… We were consistently ranked and graded “A” on our report.

Yes this is recently…

My school is ranked 107th of 1517 Texas public high schools. Not too bad…

@nothingto: SchoolDigger uses the whole state when comparing, not the school district. You went from NY public schools to NYC public schools. But, SchoolDigger isn’t completely reliable as you mentioned.

My school wasn’t ranked on schooldigger…Hmm…Back in 2008 when newsweek did the rankings, my school was ranked 5th in the state and 708th in the nation, though. So that’s not too bad.

Don’t worry Evan, mine isn’t either. And its a fairly recognized prep school…

Yeah, my school has consistently been the first in the state by Newsweek and in the top 100 nationally, with 30 offered AP courses, ISEF and Siemens winners, kids going off to HYPS every year…but schooldigger put it like 114 out of 234 schools in the STATE. Um, what?

@emeraldEvi: I would love your school. I want to win ISEF or Siemens, but I don’t have those resources to conduct extensive research. The nearest research university is an hour away (Duke).

Wow, this topic has slowed considerably since last week. Let’s start a new discussion:

Describe, in depth, your new teachers and classes. Is one of your teachers an extremely harsh grader? What are your favorite classes? Is one class in particular overwhelming you with busy work? Go ahead and list out your classes, describing each one and its teacher. (I’ll add my input once school starts for me on the 29th.)

School starts in 2 weeks for me. If I do get a harsh grader, that would REALLY REALLY suck bad. Since I am adamant in my goal of reaching 100+% in my grade (weighted).

Man, I can only hope at this point.

Early in the morning and late at night are the only time I can post on school days.

Honors Chemistry-pretty relaxed teacher, not a harsh grader (I haven’t received any assignments back yet), class is supposed to be harder than in past years, research-based (2 6-page papers due over the semester), not too hard (yet), favorite so far, expecting a 97-100 FINAL AVERAGE

Honors Precalculus-don’t even know what to say because it doesn’t start until the 25th (my school runs on NC’s community college schedule b/c we have kids taking CC classes), runs through NCSSM so it will be rigorous, YEARLONG, expecting a 94-98 FINAL AVERAGE

Health Sciences 1 (Anatomy & Physiology)-way harder than I thought, lots of vocab quizzes (bombed a quiz I didn’t know about), teacher is cool (ex-RN), teacher lets us leave 3 minutes early for lunch, NO HOMEWORK AT ALL (except studying), lots of girls in this class, expecting a 98-100 FINAL AVERAGE

Honors Physics-same teacher as Honors Chem, he’s uptight because of immature seniors, lab reports every night for homework, LOTS OF BASIC MATH AND SIG FIGS, you can only get 100s or 0s on assignments because of this new method he is trying (we learn from our mistakes and he lets us fix EVERY ASSIGNMENT), expecting a 100 FINAL AVERAGE

I still don’t have my entire schedule. Just the order of my classes. So glad I don’t have math or AP Physics in the morning. It’s all my counselor would give me. Orientation is in two days though. September 7th seems so far away.

@nothingto: you also start the 7th, right?

^ @ franz
On september 7th, school is open for Teachers.

On september 8th, school is open for students

So, it’s day after yours :P

I am in NYC

Teacher review:

French II H: Teacher is nice, I had her last year for French I. She’s a bit “off her rocker”, but in a likable way.

Chemistry Honors: This teacher is Faaaaan-tastic. Very humorous, intelligent, in your face, etc. Has unorthodox teaching methods, very succinct, yet unheard-of, grading policies (all tests are worth the same, all quizes are worth the same, all lab reports are worth the same. If you miss a quiz, no need to make it up, the next quiz will just be worth double. Miss a lab report? Excused. Apparently, kids will still do the report just for the enjoyment and learning experience. HOW DOES HE DO THAT?!). He probably will make Chemistry extremely enjoyable, and to add to that, the apparent class average in his Honor Chem classes last year was 90%. That says something.

AP US: Relatively nice teacher. One that’s ridiculously blunt on what you need to work on. So far, so good.

Gym: Our teacher got promoted to being head of the athletic dept., due to a sex scandal with the previous head (our school has problems, this is about the 3rd sex-related incident) so we don’t currently have a teacher. They haven’t found a replacement yet, and we will probably be teacher-less for another week.

Geometry: Boring teacher, plainly. Has a problem properly teaching Geometry, assigns asinine amounts of homework (apparently she’s been known to assign 20 proofs for HW. Crazy, no?). Relatively bleak class.

English: New teacher, mid-20’s. Funny, and also very helpful. English is that class where I get my mental stimulation time, so that helps.

I still have 2 weeks until school starts, am I the only one? haha

Great report, anaychi! Your Chem teacher sounds absolutely amazing!

My physics teacher gave us a homework assignment that we didn’t go over in class. He just gave it to us and didn’t teach us any of the formulas needed to solve any of the problems. I guess I’ll struggle through it then ask him about it in the morning.

My Chemistry teacher almost set me on fire today. Fun stuff.

^ What happened?! That’s crazy!

My school’s “orientation” was today. We got our books, lockers, and schedules. My books, stacked on top of each other, are at least a foot high. It’s going to be quite the year all right.

He was demonstrating the effect of fire on methane bubbles. He had a pipe connected to methane gas, with a funnel on the end, dipped it in soapy water, and poked a candle at the bubbles in mid-air, thus creating a large flame mid-air. When he stopped outputting bubbles from the pipe, he accidentally put the pipe too close to the candle, thus inducing what he called “napalm for breakfast.” The whole front end of the class got a burst of heat in their faces. It was fantastic. Funny thing is, he was telling us how he accidentally did this in the previous period right before it happened.
