High School Class of 2014

@anaychi: Labs already? I’ve been doing electron configurations, radiation, half-life, sig figs, and Bohr models for the last two weeks. For an Honors class, it’s moving slower than I thought.

Not a lab. My teacher just likes to entertain us! Today, he played around with dry ice. We’ve only had school for a week, so we haven’t started anything significant yet.

@evanb this is super late… But most of my teachers aren’t old and just there for a paycheck… They’re just… Err special? They aren’t very encouraging overall.

I start in a week and we STILL don’t have our schedules. ■■■. We usually get them 2.5-3 weeks before school starts :3

Apparently, I got really lucky. My WH teacher actually is, according to about ten people, very engaging and has a witty, sarcastic sense of humor. He also actually cares about what he’s teaching and is in a band with a few other teachers. For English, my teacher is an absolute sweetheart and there hasn’t been a single student I’ve spoken to who actually dislikes her. My acting teacher is also amazing. As for math, a lot of people say I’m unlucky to have her but she is excellent at teaching. I don’t know about Spanish III or AP Physics. It’s official, I’m pretty excited to start. Summer has become so monotonous.

How about I have a report to do for Precalc. Anyone ever done a report for a math class?

^I had to do a three-page paper on parabolae for my Alg 2/Trig class. It was pretty interesting (and probably unnecessary).

We don’t get our schedules until the first day at my school. It sucks.

My teachers are pretty nice and the classes seem/are interesting. My favorites are:

Latin 2: I love Latin. I feel that studying for Latin exams have improved my testing taking skills in other classes as well. The teacher is amazing and knows the subject very well. Not to mention that the things he taught us last year have come extremely handy this year now that I’m in AP Euro. The class (Latin) is sort of a mix of language and history.

AP Euro: Teacher is cool. We’ve already started taking notes but I haven’t really learned anything new. I’ve been a history geek since the 3rd grade so that could be it or maybe it’s just because school just started. I’m sure I’ll love the class but study groups…no. Just no. It’s unfortunately required but at least you use study hall for it and not your after school time. Other people and I…studying together. It doesn’t work. It usually feels like it pulls me down instead of pulling me up.

H. English: Good teacher. Not quite sure what to expect but it looks like it might be more rigorous than last year.

Algebra II: Great teacher. Explains things very clearly. Being a honors student in my other classes make me feel ashamed to be in algebra II. It’s basically the only class I’m in regulars. Hate it. I’m going to try really hard to get an A before the semester is over so I can get transferred to a more advanced course.

@anaychi: haha your chemistry teacher sounds EXACTLY like the chemistry teacher I had last year. He did that lab as well and really loves playing with fire. My chem teacher was pretty eccentric, and often gave depressing lectures, but he was hard to hate. XD

Like studiousmaximus, i don’t get my schedule until the first day of school  august 30th for me. I realized, whenever i slack off and don’t focus on studies, I tend to avoid this site. Like all of last and this week I wasted time watching dramas, lol. Whenever i come here, something clicks me into competitive mode and I become more motivated. I guess I’ll have to bookmark this site and visit every other day to keep myself in line. I really need to do the ap nsl and hon precalc c summer packet I procrastinated on.

I’m excited for sophomore year! I begin school on the 1st of September…but my classes are:
Honors French 3 - okay teacher. none of language teachers are good
Honors Chemistry - amazing teacher, preps well for AP Chem
Lab period M, W; Study Hall T, R, F
APUSH - not as good as old teacher, but teaches the exact same material as him
Honors Bio - new teacher
Honors science research - no clue.
Honors Orchestra - blow off class, but I need to take it to play in the city orchestra
Honors English - one of the best teachers at my school, preps you soooo well for AP English classes
Honors Algebra 2 - horrible teacher

I’m thinking about self studying AP World History…is it a good idea?

@timtim: No, it’s not a very good idea. There’s an overwhelming amount of material to learn, and it’s not really a recommended self-study course. As an alternative, why don’t you try AP Psychology? Or AP Human Geography? It’s a lot more manageable to learn those classes on your own.

On a different note, I finished my AP Bio summer assignment! I wrote 18 pages… It’s kind of sad, considering there were only 25 questions. In my defense, each question had a few sub-questions, and some warranted lengthy answers. Any one else still doing summer homework?

So Jealous of all of you guys being able to talk about your teachers! We are going to rock sophomore year guys (; Good luck as you all start!!

At least I’m not the only who has ever to do a paper in a math class. This one is on which ticket price will bring in the most revenue to a school, based on the response to a survey. It has two parts: a step-by-step procedure and a report to the principal of the school about the price to set for the tickets.

I wish that I could self-study for an AP. It seems like that I have to get it approved by every person in my school system because they don’t have any money to pay for the exams. Plus, I don’t have the money to pay for them.

This hurricane is crazy. The power went off 3 times in a matter of ~10 seconds around 6am. It knocked off the tops of the tiki lights in my driveway and I’ve been hearing sirens all morning.

AP Euro: Good teacher, but leaves a lot of the material on his test to be covered on our own, and doesn’t mention any of it in the lecture. First test was Friday, and we havent gotten our grades back, his aide told someone that only two people out of 29 made A’s, and they were both 90s.

Latin II: Amazing person, good teacher. Mostly review material so far, I’m not entirely sure.

Chemistry: Tough, but an AMAZING teacher. Very nice person as well.

Health: Really dislike. He basically just lectures about his own life for the whole period…

Debate: Can be icy if you’re on her bad side, but not if you’re on her good side.

Hon. English: Hilarious, and a great teacher.

Hon. Algebra II/Trig: Knows what she’s doing, but talks a lot about things other than math, but I’m not complaining. It’s very entertaining.

Also, in Chemistry H, my teacher weights all of the quizes, no matter the content and question count, as 20 points, but everyone gets 2 extra credit points on every quiz. So, if I were to score 100%, I would get a 22/20 on my quiz.

My Chemistry and Physics teacher screwed up both of my progress reports. For Chemistry, he lost 3 of my homework assignments and it dropped my grade to an 88. For Physics, he didn’t double check that I turned in the lab safety contract gave me a 0 for it and he gave me a 72. He’s supposed to be fixing them this weekend. My parents were about kill me when I showed the progress reports to them, but I explained what went wrong. At least I know what a D looks like on a piece of paper now!

^That’s really unfortunate. Isn’t a 72 a C- (not a D)?

@Studious: My school goes by the 7 point scale. A=93-100, B=92-85, C=84-77, D=76-70, F=69-0

Question to everyone: What grade scale does your school by?

^Yikes! Mine’s ten-point:

A+ : 98-100
A : 93-97
A- : 90-92
B+ : 88-89
B : 83-87
B- : 80-82

…

D- : 60-62
F : 59 and lower.

I really like it.

Mine also goes by a 10 point scale. I like it a lot too. But yeah! 7 point schedule would suck!!

My teachers all use different grading scales. I’ve had teachers use 92+ is an A and teachers that say 94+ is an A and 90-94 is an A-. It’s generally on a ten point scale but the specific mark offs are vary.
