High School Class of 2014

My classes for this year, don’t think I’ve posted them here yet?

Fall:
-PE 10
-CP Chemistry
-AP European History
-Honors English 10
-AP Calculus AB

Spring:
-Spanish 2
-AP Chemistry (ugh)
-AP European History
-Honors English 10
-AP Calculus BC

Our Calculus class at my school is really hard because the teacher puts stuff on the tests that she expects us to be able to “figure out” the process for but never taught us how to do it. I’m the only one with an A in her class…

Anyone else in this predicament? -

You’re on the honors track in your HS, but your school district makes kids take Alg II before Geometry?

I honestly feel confused only because I’ve taken a step back in mathematics, and I’m relatively sure that this will impact my performance in Pre-Calc next year.

For a numbers person, like myself, Geometry is ****ing annoying.

Oddly enough im always told your either a geometry or algebra person, im both…i guess im just a math and science geek ,but geometry, algebra, chemistry, physics…all interest me.

This was a question on my Health Sciences test today.

Mallory was experiencing oxygen debt. Mallory was:
A. Eating ice cream
B. Exercising
C. Thinking about an exam
D. Sleeping

Somebody actually put sleeping as their answer. EPIC FAIL

Has anyone taken the ACT yet? How’d you do?

I’m taking it for the first time in December; my red book and McGraw’s practice tests both came today. I want to do well this year so I don’t really have to worry about it next year.

Is anybody taking AP gov? We must have talked about it but I forgot.

That’s the only subject I’m getting a B on at this point. I have a good chance to raise it up to an A if I do well in next quiz. Next quiz will be on federalist papers no.51.

I’m taking AP gov :)

Looking at some of people’s schedules, excuse the language, but I feel like ****.
-My school is very limited in Honors and AP courses, and their curriculum is really against me.

–My high school is connected to my town’s middle school (I from Long Island, NY).
So, what they do is that when you enter the middle school, in 6th grade for example, they will place you in 7th grade classes if you were a smart student in the town’s elementary school.
Basically, 6th graders are taking 7th grade courses.

The problem for me is this:
I moved to the school from NYC in 8th grade and even though my grades from my last school were outstanding, and I urged them to place me in what was now considered honors high school courses, they told me that their school taught differently so I had to take regular courses with most of the middle school’s students.
Now, I was in classes filled with students who did not take school seriously.
At the end of 8th grade, my English and Social Studies teacher were amazed by me and recommended me to 9th grade honors courses.
(The school let me catch up, only in English 10Honors and S.S. 10H, to the other kids who were already ahead only because they felt that those two subjects wouldn’t be a problem skipping because English is English [not much to learn] and S.S. is history [“missing some point in history to learn about wouldn’t be a big deal”])

-Sorry for making this so long, by the way, I’m not done.

Furthermore, I was up to point in English and S.S., but how about Math and Science?! (My two favorite and easiest subjects)
This was an even bigger problem, from 6th-8th grade the school did not skip there smart students only 1 science course but two!
In 9th grade, I was taking Living Environment (Biology), while the smart students took Chemistry Honors! And I Integrated Algebra, and they Geometry!
Before going into 10th grade, I again, urged my counselor to skip me in math up to the others class. But she did not allow it.
In 10th grade, (now), I am taking Earth Science and Geometry, while the other students have Physics Honors and, Algebra II + Trigonometry (both together).

Now, I do not know what in the world colleges will think when they see me compared to all those students who are ahead.
The only plus I have is that I managed to skip 10th grade honors and go to AP European History along with about 15 students.

And I can’t go to the science course in between (Chemistry) because my school only has that class specifically for the 9th graders who are ahead.

I have high expectations for myself, and I can not stand the fact that this situation would place me at the bottom of the food chain when Senior year comes and I will probably NOT be accepted by the schools I want.

Thank you for reading and I don’t know what I expect you to do about it, but I just had to write about it for the first time since this situation came along.
Please let me know if some information may seem hard to understand or you would like to know something additional

Honestly, your performance in a class is what matters more than the class itself. Though this can’t compare to your situation, I can slightly relate: One of the two middle schools that feed into my high school gave the opportunity to some 8th graders to jump two years ahead in math, rather than one. Due to that, many students in my grade from the other middle school are taking Pre-Calc Honors, while kids from my school were gypped out of that opportunity, even though many of us were able for the task. My point is that I realized that this really won’t impact my chances at top schools as long as I can prove that I’m a more-than-able student and I excel in the courses that I have the opportunity to take. Top school tend to take a holistic approach towards admissions, so there’s really no need to worry about what you are worrying about. Load yourself into EC’s that you’ll love, learn how to write spectacular essays, excel in your classes, and you’ll be golden.

@jereve, what are you doing in gov.?

We are about to start chapter 4, just finished the basics of the constitution/memorizing the amendments and all the chapter 3 federalism stuff. You?

we are way behind. we just finished chap.2. we’ll have a quiz on federalist papers 51 tomorrow. are you doing well? I totally failed my first quiz but did well in the others. so now I’m having a 89. :)

Thank you for responding, you don’t know what difference you have made in my mind.
I can now feel relaxed with this situation for the next years! I appreciate it.

Oh hey guys. I’m back from the two months I haven’t been here… :stuck_out_tongue: School has started off a bit rocky…
I have:

American History I (in which my first summer reading test I got an 84 on)
French 3 (the most boring class ever; our teacher sucks)
English 10 Honors (probably my favorite class)
Orchestra
Chemistry Honors (it’s ok)

I haven’t gotten any full scores on tests/quizzes yet. I’m waiting for one.
Also, right now and over the weekend I’m working on my Lord of the Flies essay.
Anybody read that book before?

Quelle coincidence! I am not a fan of my French 3 teacher either :I

polodolly: Strangely enough, I’m not either :/. I’m supposed to have a good one for French 4 though…

My classes this year are (I go to a prep school so they’re all considered honors/ap level):

Precalc
World History 10
English 10
Chemistry
Digital Photography 1st semester, Gods and Humans 2nd
French II

So much work, oh my goodness. I think History is trying to kill me. It’s my least favorite class besides English. I like my other classes though, and I’m getting all As so far.

I had a ridiculously hard test in Precalc today. The teacher gave us the easy examples in the review session, but gave us crazy hard problems. Plus, she weighs tests as 50% (which is way too much compared to the other things). I’m trying to keep an A, so I hope I didn’t get less than a 93.

Do any of you guys freak out over getting an A-?

For my first test in Trig, I got a 91. And I’m kind of happy about it, because for Geometry (even though I did well in the class) I didn’t do so hot on tests. Proofs always confused me. Yet, at the same time, there is this little nagging voice in my head that is going “you were 2 points away from an A, what is wrong with you?!”. Woes of being a perfectionist.

I have another test Monday in Trig, same with AP Physics B. But I stayed home Thursday cause I was sick, and we had yesterday off. So I am really, really worried. I also have to make up a Spanish and World History test Monday. Four tests. This is going to be fun.

Finally got my schedule sorted!

College Chem
Precalc
Acting
Advanced French 2 (French 2 and 3 in one year)
English

So stressed. Chem and Precalc always manage to have tests on the same day! Thankfully at my school, we grade on a 1-6 scale, so I just aim for anything between 85 and 100.
