High School Class of 2014

@paris: Not very well. We went 2-2. We did beat TJ, though. Oh and our first debate scores were 26 us, 25 them, and they got the win. What?! The judge even said that he gave them lower points because of something to do with presentation. I was pretty miffed at that. Also, my partner’s case disappeared from Google Docs the morning of the competition, so we had to borrow a very inexperienced debater’s case. We would have surely done better if we actually had a solid pro case. Furthermore, it was my partner’s first time, so he wasn’t the best. I was happy with my performance, though. Some comments said I was a ‘superb orator’ and ‘impeccably skilled debater’. How’d you do?

I’m gonna post my schedule for next year because I’m bored and have nothing else to do. (Well, besides homework, but I’ll probably procrastinate till around 10pm tonight) :D

-AP US History
-AP English Language
-CP Physics (Prerequisite for AP)
-AP Physics B
-Spanish 3 (Honors not offered for foreign languages)
-Spanish 4
-Multivariable Calculus (at CC)
-Differential Equations (at CC)

As a junior, should I take APUSH or AP Econ? Does it matter?

2-2 as well but we ONLY debated TJ accidentally printed the wrong can case, but ironically we only won con. I think our first judge got us mixed up, there wasn’t any possible reason we should’ve won, on the ballot it simply said “don’t argue” our 3rd judge told us not to do anything important during crossfire because she won’t pay attention(***?) and I’d go up there and have to say judge ready multiple times, she was more concerned with her ear infection, no flowing, no feedback other than to both teams saying we didn’t use etiquette… Which we did… She was the one with her feet up… I wish I could elaborate more here, but after that cyberbulling lecture, not going to go there. It sadens me because we should’ve gone 4-0. We were either 17/18 place though which isn’t too bad for our first time in jv. The last judge we had was superb and he sat down with my partner and I after to discuss the round and told us we should move up to varsity, which was refreshing to hear.

^^ I would take APUSH. Colleges know it’s one of the more rigorous APs, and if you get an A and/or 5 on the test, they’ll know you can handle the difficult load of college classes. Also, US history is a far more essential subject for an American to know versus something like economics, which is still good to know, but not as important.

@paris: That’s disappointing to hear. All in all, it turned out to be a very definition-important debate. The differing meanings of ‘democratic ideals’ caused different teams to have drastically distinct cases, which wasn’t very conducive to good arguments. I’m not sure what place we got; I’ll have to check. We got fairly high point scores despite our losses, though, so we should do pretty well. I really need to find a solid partner… I keep teaming with new debaters who have never done PF, and it really hinders my success.

@studious Come be my partner lololol. Luckily we were able to find a textbook definition of democratic ideals that no one could argue. We decided to run this contention about income disparity between men and women and races and nobody understood it at all… So in their final focus they’d say “Judge that contention is clearly irrelevant” and it was so frustrating. Wasn’t a very productive debate.

We defined democratic ideals as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (as outlined by the Declaration of Independence) for con. For pro, we said democratic ideals were equal opportunity, equal say in government, and equal protection under the law. It worked pretty well for both sides. And I wish I could be your partner! It’s not fair that there aren’t many good debaters at my school… By the way, how’d you find your placement?

No one argued your definitions? I thought our pro case was really strong… But we didn’t win it at all): I really wish our debate program was stronger, and I wish I had someone who could actually help with cases… When they gave back the ballots they had all of results/placing printed in a packet. I think we had either 108/107/109 speaking points. We won novice last time with just under a 100 (lol fail)

Oh they certainly tried. One of the TJ teams we debated said that because it was the Declaration and not the Constitution, it was not a part of the democratic fabric of society. I refuted this by saying that the phrase’s influence is easily seen in the Bill of Rights, which grants citizens essential rights that are characteristic of democracies, as well as saying that when Thomas Jefferson wrote the phrase, he was drawing from influences of Athenian philosophers (and Athens is the birthplace of democracy and its ideals). So we basically won that point. And the packet I got only showed the first six. Strange…

My coach has the full thing if you’d like me to look for you. One of the teams argued the same thing, but in my case I talked about Locke and his influence on Jefferson, so I just kindly reminded them and they shut up xD, same kids possibly? lol

Yes, I conveniently left Locke out. Were they two Indian kids? Those were the ones who argued our definition. And can you tell me the rankings for the people who went 2-2? Like 15. Highschool XX 16. Highschool XX, etc. That way, I can somewhat preserve my anonymity (though you’ll have narrowed it down ;)).

I don’t understand the mumbo-jumbo debate history stuff Studious and jereve are talking about so I’m just going to post my schedule for next semester and my tenative junior year.

@studious I’ll try to just take a picture to send to you, no worries I still don’t know who you are ahah. nope it wasn’t 2 Indian guys I think I know who you were talking about though. Is that the only tj team you debated?

No, we debated TJ twice. Lost once. And thanks!

We don’t have a meeting tomorrow (go figure), but I’ll still try to do it

Okay, thanks! I might actually get the results tomorrow, so I’ll let you know if I still need them.

Anyone know how they did on their finals? I didn’t study for any of mine and I did terrible. :stuck_out_tongue: (Scores ranging from an 84% - 75%.) I knew my grades wouldn’t change, though, and they didn’t. Ended the semester with 4 A’s, 2 B’s, and a GPA of 4.1.

Season’s greetings fellow sophomores! I found this thread today and skimmed over the first and last 5 pages. Following suit, I suppose I’ll post this year’s schedule:
