UHG! Just found out I’m probably not going to be val … another student in my class I just learned took a ton of APs last year (which is practically impossible at my school) and in really hard APs this year (chem, physics, calc etc) !! He took highschool courses in eighth grade (well, I did too, but Algebra I and French I in middle school is pretty ordinary for honor students in my school) … Hopefully he switches schools or graduates early. I really dont I can catch up to so many APs… and I guess I really shouldnt worry about being val… but I was pretty psyched that I was probably top in my class…

What a complete bummer. (He’ll have 8 by the end of this year and I’ll only have 4…)

So after the second day of school I finally got the right schedule
Chemestry Hon
English II Hon
AP Euro
Student Body
Precalc Honors
Spanish II

So happy about it. For the first two days I was stuck in PE and Alg II instead of Precalc and Spanish. I was worried I’d never get my schedule set right. Got every class I wanted scheduled, finally met my counselor today and she really liked me, and she squeezed me into the only precalc Hon class that is already had 41 people (max is supposed to be 40.) Today was a productive day.

@goodnoodle, sounds like your counselor likes you! I wish it were the same for me.

My math teacher is a little spunky and not the best teacher. She wastes time going over a homework problem (which is fine) but she doesn’t understand why we students don’t get it. She just rushes the notes too often and the concept doesn’t stick in our heads… Should I confront her with this issue? Or is it better to play it safe and just study hard on my own?

@cookiestuf Every math teacher I’ve ever had has been like that, but I usually just study the material on my own or use online videos (i.e. Khan Academy, PatrickJMT). But if you’re really concerned, I think you should talk to her, or explain to her WHY you don’t understand or which part specifically it is you’re having trouble with. After all, her job as a teacher is to make sure that you understand the material.

@elf4EVA I’ve never heard of PatrickJMT, but I’ll definitely look into that. I’m personally not quite used to having a bad math teacher because all my math teachers so far have been outstanding or at least proficient at teaching. I think I will go ask her for any help if I don’t understand a concept. Thanks!

@ Purpledino, I know I really should stress out about it… and even if I dont make sal or val I’ll probably still be in the top 1% … Plus, I think its kind of likely (moreso than the average student) for her to transfer to a better school or graduate early. She’s completing her math and science credits required for graduation this year (well, last year she finished them), and theres really a numbered amount of classes my school has to still offer her. I think I’ll be happy either way though.

How do I get my class rank/GPA to go up? I’m a sophomore this year but my school only gives out the GPA/class rank from last year. My rank is a 25 out of 276 students which isn’t that great since I want to go to Ivy League. Will taking more AP classes than others raise my GPA?

Your gpa is basically your average grade throughout highschool. Most times classes that are harder get weighted more then classes that are easier (art will count less for an A then biology should for the same grade) . So if you take more APs this year your rank will probably go up but only if you get a’s. … If you don’t think you’ll get an a then don’t do it.

I feel like this thread disappears too often. the '13, '14, and '16 threads are super active, and this thread was buried in the third page when I found it…

Anyways, I just found out that my most recent math test made my grade drop 10% (from 100 to 90). And yes, I’m admitting this on CC, because, unlike most schools, Honors Precalc at my school is absolutely NOT a joke. This is coming from someone who doubled in Honors Algebra 2 and Honors Geometry last year and ended up with over 100% in both classes, both semesters. So, yeah, I’m ready to die now. Well, at least we have test corrections (which I had never had to do until this test. by the way, do you have TCs for math at your school???).

TCs? Not sure what that is… I took precal over the summer and it was pretty easy… There was a lot of review from my algebra I class and then they was asymptotes and putting sin and tan and cos in a graph… That stuff was kind of hard and confusing… Can’t remember anything else about the class though.

@Teaspoons TCs stand for test corrections. I’m not sure any other school has them though… Yeah, our honors precalc class is killer - supposedly the most difficult class on campus (more so than BC Calc, AP Physics, AP Chem, etc.). Our teacher’s like, “My test are very conceptual in nature”, and he wasn’t kidding. You really have to KNOW the concepts and how to apply them in certain situations (my teacher was an engineering major in college, so he’s all about applications lol) and not just memorize a bunch of graphing techniques or whatever. On the bright side, though, I found out today that almost everyone’s grades dropped >20% after that test was factored in, so I’m really hoping that our teacher will curve the grades. We’ll see…

@elf4EVA I noticed that other class threads talk about stuff outside of school more than we do. That’s one reason why we’re not as active. Also, we’re sophomores, the “filler” grade. Freshman are still excited about school, juniors are preparing for senior year, and seniors are applying to colleges.

My life is just homework and piano lessons/art lessons/spare-time volunteering for this week. Good luck to you, Alex. I hope you win prez! I wish I were brave enough to run! I’m too introverted to do talky-speaky things of that nature.

Thinking of joining JCL and/or MUN and/or Mock Trial clubs at my school - opinions? :)

Mock trials!!!? That sounds awesome, my school doesn’t have that, Same with MUN. I think those are awesome clubs!!

Oh I love the piano. My mom taught me how to play, but my main specialty is the violin.
I think its so cool when people really play the piano well! I just love it!! And my biggest fault, visual arts. I can’t draw to save my life. I still use stick figures with crooked heads and disproportionate bodies!
