Uk Girl
I have a question? Does your school teach us history in a positive or negative light? Also does it bring up things like the 3/5ths clause and explain them?

My major will depend what college I go to
Hillsdale college: Economics and Math Dual Major
Ave Maria University: Mangerial Econ and Theology dual major
University of Dallas: Economics and Finance +1MBA
Texas AM either Bhp +Finance or Applied Math and Economics
U of Alabama: Dual Major quantative Econ and Investment finance with possible university scholars In Economics
UPenn Wharton Finance
And other colleges that are not high on my list

The stuff we learn about seems pretty unbiased, but it’s hard to tell really. Some of it is a negative light, but not severely. We haven’t done enough for me to get a better idea.
Never heard of that, so no honestly, we haven’t looked at the US on its own, so only do it in relation to other events eg WWI, Wall Street crash effects on Germany

That is so organised! I don’t even know what country I’m going to, let alone colleges and specific majors!

I am leaning towards economics or finance or medicine but to be honest I have no idea. I guess I am sort of waiting until I get to college so I can learn more in detail about different subjects
So this is for anyone is lives in NC, are you guys applying to Summer Ventures this year? I am (I really hope I get in It will be pretty cool if I get to meet some of you guys! If you are the application is up

If you choose history for 9th and 10th grade here (if you don’t you can’t do ny history in high school) on my exam board we do:
Russia 1905-1945
Germany 1918-1939
International relations which I think we do two aspects of the cold war
and two controlled assesments, ours are on WWI and the wars at sea in the world wars

@HobbitTon: CONGRATS! I’m currently in the process of writing an essay to compete for the HOBY ambassador from my school. I just have a few questions about how your school does it:
Did you have to write an essay? Or have an interview or anything?
What kind of leadership positions, if any, have you had so far?
If you don’t mind me asking, which state are you from?

For my school, anyone interested has to write a 100-word essay on the challenges and rewards of being a leader in your school community. Then, I think the top ten people are interviewed for the spot. I haven’t officially started writing mine yet, but I’ve been brainstorming. I know HOBY’s focus is on leadership, but I’m a bit worried because I haven’t had any leadership positions so far. I ran for student council rep last year, but I lost. I really want to be a leader, but I just haven’t yet, so I don’t know if that will hinder me from being chosen. I’ll just try to show them my leadership potential and hope they see it.

@Kypdurron, pretty sure that they don
t talk about the Revolutionary War and say, “They BEAT us, and now they
re not part of Britain (Now UK) anymore so you have to hate them!” ;)

OK, my big plan:

-Do ROTC or go to the Naval Academy and serve as an officer in the Marines
-Once I get out, then if I didn
t have the chance to major in journalism as an undergrad, I
ll get my Masters in it. If I already did, then I`ll go work for a newspaper
-Also, write books

My plan involves a lot of what ifs and a lot if dependent on one thing or another.

@UKGirl… we take history every year of school, all the way to our 12th grade, and in high school, we take World History 1 & 2 (Part one goes up until like 1750 and part 2 goes up to modern day) and in 11th here we take US/Virginia history, and in 12th, it
s government. We learn about all our U.S history, from the 16000
s to the present, and in world history we learn about all the major events in the world like all the big ancient empires, Britain, etc.

@RoseOak3918: Thank you so much! I am beyond ecstatic. As far your questions:

1) No, I did not have to write an essay to get in or even an interview for that matter. The administrators keep their eyes since the beginning of the year. They pick the sophomore that they feel is the most involved and distinguished leader at our school, and I feel that is a bit more competitive to get into HOBY from my school (which has 700 sophomores) because they take into account everything you have been doing since freshmen year.

2) My high school passion is definitely youth servant leadership, so I am very involved in my community. I am very grateful for the opportunities I have been presented. It all comes down to hard work and how much you are willing to put in. As far as my leadership positions go:

Student Council - Officer-at-Large
Beta Club - Student Leadership Team
Jr. Civitan - Public Relations Officer
Spanish Club - Technology Coordinator
Model Atlanta Regional Commission - Environment and Lang Use Committee Vice-Chair
Greening Forward- Program Director (It’s a internationally involved youth environmental non-profit)
County Children’s Shelter - Teen Board
Speaking at TEDxYouth

3) I am from Georgia (the metro Atlanta region).

A word of advice: It is never to late to get involved. Find your niche and develop it. You can do it!

Do your research on schools that interest you. Find out the majors they offer, how strong a certain branch is, the party scene, financial aid, etc etc.

My dream school is Brown I also like Princeton, Northwestern, Macalester, and UChicago

Dream school: Johns Hopkins because it has a good medicine program and that’s what I want to pursue. Otherwise, Carnegie Mellon because I visited and it looks so tightly-knit and welcoming.

What clubs are you guys doing? I’m doing like 10 and can’t even keep track of them all, but I’m doing them because I really like them all, not just to be impressive.

My most impressive position would probably be that I’m on the staff of my school’s selective literary magazine.

^ I didn’t know you played rugby in the US!?!

Debating
Cycling
Swimming
Renaissance (culture and discussion)
And I do a lot of history stuff, like tomorrow I’m going the the Imperial War Museum London for a volunteer workshop/test of some software that’s going to be used in their WWI centenary project digitalising their entire collection of related photos.

After that I’m going shopping, because I am very short of clothes suitable for Grecian weather, then maybe visiting the tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster, because I’ve never been before. I’m going to be going into London 4 times this week, which is about how many times I’ve been in in the last year What are everyone else’s plans for the rest of the weekend?

Yes, Rugby exists in a very small scale. However, its becoming extremely popular in Texas. I believe that over 100 highschools in texas have teams.

Here where i live there are around 12-15 teams in a 3hour radius

I just got back from basketball practice, and I just love the feeling that you get after you take a shower and cool off, and you’re just in that state of post excersize bliss. On the downside, I wore shoes that were too small at my coach’s request and my feet are killing me. (I’m a 13.5 that wears 14’s that are too big so he told me to try 13’s.)

Now Imma get ready to head out to a party in 2 hours. (which sounds hypocritical since I said I dont like parties, but this is a small birthday party with only 7-8 people…it’s over at 9)

I just got back from seeing Argo, and if you guys havent seen it yet, I *HIGHLY* recommend it. Its an excellent movie, and my mom said that it was pretty realistic of what was going on at that time. Really shed some light on the whole situation, because I haven`t even learned that much about it in school.
