High school class of 2016

Conic sections are taught in Algebra II around here.
Except my Algebra II teacher ditched our class to become a principal halfway through 8th grade and I blame him for not knowing any conics.

but yeah, agreed, precalc curriculums do vary a lot. Some of it’s making sure you learned everything you needed to know in prior classes (at least in my experience), but having a strong foundation, especially in trig and the unit circle, will be really helpful in calculus.

@Cornball - We touched on conics in geometry (last year, too).
The course description says: factoring, rational expressions, functions (polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic), polynomial equations, linear programming, sequences, series, polar coordinate formats, the concept of limit, proofs of the continuity of functions, definition of derivatives, differentiation, related rates, polynomial/rational curve sketching, and optimization problems (applied min/max).

No idea what that all meant.

@loltired - The notorious unit circle. D: I think I’m fine with it and I understand the concept, it’s just not very intuitive for me (so far in trig).

… we definitely didn’t get to the definition of derivatives, differentiation, related rates, continuity at all in precalc. I feel like that should be retaught in calculus, and all of it was in my BC class during the AB section. everything else you probably need a good grasp on.

It’s fine if you don’t memorize the unit circle! My calculus teacher uses reference angles and it seems to work for her, I just prefer the unit circle.

I feel like I should already know what the unit circle is, but I didn’t memorize because it was only in physics and I was only in geometry at the time. Oh wells, that’s why I have at least another semester to memorize it lolol

cooldddddddddddddddddd

Hi, will I be fine if I take 5 AP’s in junior year?

Schedule:

AP Biology

AP Lang

AP Economics

AP Literature

Physics (honors not offered)

Chemistry (honors not offered)

Honors Pre-Calculus

I have never taken any AP’s but I am to the challenge and very organized and timely.

My schedule for 9-10th grades was a little ‘unchallenging’ so I want to make up for that GOOD. Keep in mind I want to go to a Top 20-25 college!

You want to take 3 science classes?

So I just figured out that I’ll have to do two chapters of the AP Chem textbook per week from now until the end of March. In April, I’ll take practice exams/review.

Bio and cal BC will follow similar paths.

This is going to be fun…

I’ll reply to you guys in the morning. Need sleep.

Sometimes I question why my school allows people to go from no AP’s sophomore year to 5 AP’s junior year and then refuse to let students drop the AP’s when they’re failing.

Ap chem is the first 100 pages of adkins, which is really simple if you have a parent teach it to you.(2 weeks). However the rest of adkins is college stuff.

@loltired - Thanks for all your help! I think I’m going to check out the pre-calc textbook and self-teach myself a little from there, and if it’s waaay too difficult, I’ll just go into honors.

@texanhowler - 5 APs is probably manageable (I really hope, considering I’m taking the same amount next year), but it might be hard to adjust to the workload if you’ve never had any experience with AP classes in your school before. Were your 9th and 10th grade schedules not rigorous because your school doesn’t offer APs to 9th and 10th graders, or was it because of your own choosing?

@Jawmess - The APs in my school are basically open classes. Even if you were in “regular” world history this year (everyone else is in AP World), the school lets you jump to APUSH next year as long as you have an 80+ in the regular class. The prereqs are a joke.

Hi guys! I’m new around here, so I’d thought I’d drop in to say hello to everybody here. =) I’m a sophomore as well, and I go to a pretty competitive public school in Texas. Rank is basically life here, which is annoying. =P

Has everybody enjoyed their break so far?

@Almondjoy7 Hi! We don’t know our ranks yet and welcome to the …family? Haha I can’t think of anything else to say.
I have school on Monday so I’m bummed. Especially since I have a project due and exams soon.

And by “we” I mean the sophomores in my school.

@catchinginfinity
I think that’s how my school works too, but a lot of people I know just have C’s in all of their core classes because they weren’t ready to try, so I think my APUSH class next year would probably be just the same people.

I was 3rd out of 388 last year
stupid standard spanish :(

oh and good luck @catchinginfinity!

My break has been really busy. I had this checklist of stuff I had to get done and there were 14 things and I still have 5 things I haven’t done… study for finals, mock trial, sat, sat 2 math 2, science olympiad… ugh

The governor here in Minnesota cancelled school for everyone on Monday. I’m so happy.

@say: You are so lucky. We got our ranks first semester after first semester, and it just stresses everybody out and makes us all competitive. Not fun.

@loltired: (your username is the story of my life, by the way) Are you taking the SAT as a sophomore, or just studying early? Ever since I got my meh PSAT scores back, I feel the need to start studying soon… it just always gets pushed back. =P

@Animefan: You lucky duck! Stay warm, though! I don’t have school Monday because it’s a Teacher Work Day. Thank goodness.

I’m actually happy that my exams were before break, even though it was so. stressful. Especially with snow days and stuff. But it’s nice not to have to worry about finals now. ;)

I’m starting to feel the need to do more extracurriculars, but my school basically has nothing academic, besides Debate, which I’m in. I don’t even know what to do. sighs

^Correction: I have ALWAYS felt the need to do more extracurriculars, because I do so few. I just feel like time is slipping away so quickly, and soon, there won’t be any more time to find anymore.
