High school class of 2016

Gosh got my psat score back of 216 and my dad is basically treating me like a failure

@swifty: I got a score of 197. Tell him to take a deep breath, chill, and promise him you’ll do better. Because you will.

^hes mad because he wants to see a 2300+ and is convinced that all the practice I’ve been doing lately is only to get me to a mid 2200

@swifty the difference between a mid 2200 and a 2300 is pretty minimal

@almond I don’t have any ECs except maybe golf/tennis and 20 hrs of community service over 2 years. It’s just a waste of time to me.

I still haven’t logged my 10 hours of community service

@Almondjoy - Welcome to CC, I have a few friends from Texas! (: Most of my extracurriculars take place outside-of-school; schools offer clubs and academic teams at most, but there are probably a lot of programs in your region that you could look into.

@swifty - Wow. Even my parents wouldn’t say a 216 is a failure, and they have pretty high standards (but then again, maybe their standards for the PSATs are lower because of my own terrible score). :stuck_out_tongue: Especially if you didn’t do any test prep, you shouldn’t be upset with a 216.

My school doesn’t have any pre-req. for AP classes, but if you have a D or E by the end of 1st semester (which is in 2 weeks at my school) you get kicked out. A lot of kids drop AP classes at the end of 1st quarter though if they realize they can’t handle it. Also you can’t go on the special AP field trips if you have a D or E, so yeah.

@Almondjoy I took it in October but my parents want me to retake in May/June and get 800 on math and writing to get it out of the way. Sigh. Your PSAT score isn’t meh at all, though!
You could try starting some clubs at your school! Then you could have leadership positions as well.

@swifty A 216 is great though! PSATs aren’t the best representation of SAT scores because the curves are harsher and I mean, you can always take the SAT more than once and superscore…

@swifty, a 216 doesn’t translate to a SAT score of 2160, in fact, say, this kid got around 180, he actually scored between 2136-2150 (not impressive, but it’s a good start for now), so your 216 is definitely not ridiculously far from your goal of 2300, and with practice (which I’m sure you’ll do) you will surpass your goal!

@linnchaplin wait, how does that work? I always thought you just add a zero at the end to get your “predicted” SAT score?

@linnchaplin haha i’m basically that kid
who got a 208 on the psat and a 2270 on the sat a week later

but in all honestly I think a 2150 is pretty impressive, considering the national average is well below that.

Thanks for all your support guys

@loltired - Are you a sophomore or a junior? (You said you took the SAT and most people take it in their junior year.)

@desi - That’s how it’s supposed to be, but the PSAT really isn’t an accurate assessment of your future SAT score (in my opinion). Most people’s scores go up either because of studying or because of the curve. I don’t know why, but I personally found PSAT math to be slightly harder than SAT math, which I know makes absolutely no sense…maybe because I was extremely tired that day?

I’m a sophomore! The boarding school I’m applying to requires an SAT score.

and @swifty best of luck! I have no doubt that you can break that 2300 barrier

i totally agree! i just got my psat score back, which was a 180. but then, I’ve been getting 2250 and above almost every single time :frowning: on my practice sat tests

@swifty A 216 as a sophomore is really, really good! I am sure your SAT will be 2300+ by the time you take it junior or senior year!

Have you guys started prepping for the Sat? Classes or review books?

I’ve been in a small class since 5th grade that transitioned from writing to SAT in middle school. It really helped writing skills majorly and critical reading slightly.

@catchinginfinity, if you want to self study pre-calculus and plan on taking SAT II Math Level 2, just buy Barron’s SAT II Math 2C. Much more difficult than the actual SAT II; I basically taught myself pre-cal with that book.

@almondjoy, hi! As for your need to do more ECs, remember, it’s depth, not breadth, that matters.

@swiftyfan13x/desigirl/anyone out there worrying about PSAT—>SAT conversion:
The percentiles that the College Board offers in the Score Reports are often coarsely rounded and vague for very high scores. For example, all scores 212 and higher are merely listed as being in the 99th percentile on the Score Report. However, the corresponding percentiles for that range (212-240) actually run from 98.50 to 99.99.

Data are variously interpolated and extrapolated from http://professionals.collegeboard.co…ite_cr_m_w.pdf and http://professionals.collegeboard.co…sqt-scores.pdf.

Order: PSAT; PERCENTILE; CONCORDANCE; RARITY (One in…)

240…99.99…2400…10,000
239…99.99…2400…10,000
238…99.98…2400…5,000
237…99.97…2390…3,333
236…99.96…2390…2,500
235…99.95…2380…2,000
234…99.93…2370…1,428
233…99.91…2360…1,111
232…99.89…2360…909
231…99.87…2350…769
230…99.84…2340…625
229…99.81…2330…526
228…99.78…2330…454
227…99.74…2320…384
226…99.70…2310…333
225…99.66…2310…294
224…99.61…2300…256
223…99.56…2300…227
222…99.50…2290…200
221…99.43…2270…175
220…99.36…2260…156
219…99.28…2250…139
218…99.20…2250…125
217…99.12…2240…114
216…99.03…2230…100
215…98.88…2230…89
214…98.77…2220…81
213…98.64…2210…74
212…98.50…2200…67
211…98.35…2190…61

Simply adding a “0” at the end isn’t accurate. For example, my score of 212 wouldn’t translate into 2120; it would probably be ~2200. Your 216, therefore, doesn’t translate to a 2160; it’s higher.

@say: I haven’t done any SAT prep as of now. Going to prep the two months over summer to raise my projected SAT to a 2300.

@loltired, I’m applying to my state’s math/science academy as well. Going to finish up the essays tonight and start my resume tomorrow. Do you have to do a work sample? If so, what are you doing (if you don’t mind my asking)?

@wcao, AP Chem is seriously the first 100 pages of Atkins?

My PSAT score sort of scared me into starting to prepare. CR is the hardest for me right now. Writing has improved a lot since we got scores back- hopefully it will stay high.
