High school class of 2016

@say I’ve been to one class, but it wasn’t one of those fancy princeton review classes or whatever. It was $10 and held by sylvan and it was a load of crap. Other than that, I’ve been doing blue book practice tests and I reviewed some stuff from a princeton review book. I recently bought the black book so I’ll see how that goes…

@TeamRocketGrunt No work sample, but good luck with yours. I kind of stalked the application page of your science and math academy (sorry that’s probably creepy) but it seems a bit more complicated than mine is. Although the Mount Rushmore prompt sounds really interesting…

@Catchinginfinity I’ve finished a few chapters of the Barons SAT II Math 2C and wow! There is a lot of good stuff to review in there and like TeamRocketGrunt said, I’m sure it will definitely help with the SAT II and probably the self study, all though it’s not as in depth.

I’m trying to decide on a calculator to use for the SAT II actually…
I have the 83, 84+ Silver, 89 Titanium, and Nspire CAS
I’m most familiar with the 84, but the 89 is kind of similar in format
and the Nspire’s a loan from my teacher and it’s a bit complicated and probably hard to learn
but I can add a bunch of notes to the 89 and Nspire in case I forget how to do stuff and it would be easier than adding them to the 84 or 83 because the format doesn’t look quite right. They also don’t clear calculators.
but hm I’ve been pondering this for a few days now

Loltired, use what you’re comfortable with. I’d suggest the 84, since you’re comfortable with that. For notes, just go into programs, create a new program, and type away. To view, go into the program and select “EDIT” to see all the text.

LOL as for the Rushmore prompt, I think that one’s going to be the more annoying one to write about. What state do you live in?

@lovetennis - Same, glad I’m not the only one. /:

@say - I’ve taken classes over the summer and started self-studying recently (mainly just for CR); I would recommend self-studying if you have a decent attention span and you’re motivated enough. Classes helped, but I feel like studying on my own helped even more because I wasn’t dependent on someone else.
Classes do force you to stay on a schedule, though. I definitely wouldn’t have gotten as much studying done over the summer had I not taken the class. Looking back, it was a little too rigorous…it got to the point where I was up until 1-2am memorizing vocab and I actually broke down once haha. I went to a prep place near the city (not PR, Kaplan, or any other “SAT company” - I heard they weren’t too good) so I was there with a bunch of kids from specialized high schools and the competition was really fierce.

@Team/@loltired - Thanks for the rec! Does it cover all topics of pre-calc pretty thoroughly (obviously give or take a few because of variations in classes)?

My friend has the Nspire and it seems really difficult to learn but has super awesome applets for stats (and the graphs/models you can create are AMAZING). :D

Does anyone know how to install applets for the 84+ (Silver Ed. if it matters)? I’m too lazy to go through the manual and look up instructions, so I tried installing them without doing so and it didn’t appear on my calculator for whatever reason (but the operation was successful…I think).

but… the notes look nicer on the 89 :frowning:
It’s not that different from the 84 in design, though. But lol yeah, everyone’s been telling me to use the the 84. Meh, I figured learning the tips and tricks of the 89 might help in higher math classes.

At least it’s more interesting than… “How will you contribute to our school outside of the classroom?” & north carolina ahaaha it sucks :(

@catchinginfinity I’d recommend getting an actual textbook, maybe you could ask a precalc teacher at your school which one they use and maybe if they could give you a copy of the curriculum or something
or ask a BC teacher about what you need to know going into their class
but the SAT II workbook is a nice refresher of not only precalc, but everything before, as well

and no idea about the applets, sorry :(

When you guys get snow days, does that mean your winter/summer breaks are shorter?

^My Easter break is cut short or days are added to the end of the school year in May.

@loltired, what are your essay prompts?

We have special days scheduled for make up days and they’re usually teacher workdays, but if we run out of those then they take it out of our breaks.

@TeamRocketGrunt

Describe your personality and what makes you unique?
What words best describe your character? Give specific examples of why each word is applicable.
Have you had any adversity in your life that you want to explain?
How will you contribute outside of the classroom to the community?
What else do you want to make sure the selection committee knows about you?

Those are for the residential program but then there are ~10 more for online, which I didn’t bother applying to.

@loltired - I was planning on doing that! My school is super small so the same teacher who teaches pre-calc also teaches AB and BC. I’m definitely taking a class outside-of-school to supplement looking at the textbook, too. I just really hope I’ll be able to maintain good grades next year in AP Calc.

@BattleforLA - We have 5 snow days (any extra days after that gets removed from summer and spring break); so far, we had 3 days off from school, but only one of them counts because the other two were delays and early dismissals. :P

@BattleforLA- My school has 3 snow days and if we use them up, we go to school during the spring break to make up for the days lost. But I don’t think this had ever happened. When Sandy struck, we didn’t go to school for a week but made up those days by going to school in NJ Teacher Convention days (2 days, supposed to be no school) and the high school kids actually went to the middle school (high school had no power but middle school did) :)

I didn’t even realize how fast this thread moves, but I must say, I like it! =)

From a few pages back…

@catchinginfinity: Yeah, I’m looking into some stuff in my region. I live in a decent sized city, so there’s plenty of opportunities to do stuff outside of school. It’s just hard to find the right opportunities, you know?

@loltired: Ah, I get the whole “parents wanting you to get an 800” thing. Actually, I’m sure most here get it. =P You’re going to be fantastic whenever you decide to retake it though!! And thank you! I got a 197 without any prep, so I honestly wasn’t too sad/angry about it, but my parents were all like “YOU SHOULD HAVE STUDIED”. Le sigh.

@TeamRocketGruant: I’m definitely keeping in mind that it’s the depth that matters, but I flat out have a pathetic amount of them. So I’d like to add just a few. But thank you for that vote of confidence. ;)

@loltired: For that third question, can you just put “NO” and be done? You’d have all the respect points from me if you did, hahaha. ;)

Also, re: starting to prep for the SAT. I’ve started to get serious about it, since I finally realized that it’s coming up waaay faster than I intended. There’s this local prep place that most of the kids here go to, but I think I’m motivated enough to study on my own. I want to do well badly enough, and so I think I can self-study. I have a lot of work to do, though, especially with my writing score, ugh.

@imhkim - Welcome back to CC! (:

@almond - It usually doesn’t move this fast…winter break, I guess.

Contemplating deactivating Facebook/leaving CC/disconnecting from world for the next four months to study for APs.

@Almondjoy7 I got a 198 with practicing only a little the week before. It was a little discouraging, but I guess it motivated me to study:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@TeamRocketGrunt what APs do you have this year? My Physics B teacher, as nice as he is, is not that great at teaching and I am really worried about the exam.

Also, how do you guys study for AP exams? How early do you start?

@TeamRocketGrunt are you going to end your social life too?

@Almondjoy7 Thank you and ugh yeah the magic number, 800. I’m getting sick of it hahah.
I guess I could put No for both 3 and 5  but I’ve already written 1470 characters for each so ;)

I’m contemplating deleting my tumblr but I’d miss my 6k followers and I feel like I put in so much effort, ugh but I get so addicted. :frowning: I’m so bad at reaching my goals because of procrastination.

It was because of my low confidence in my self and somewhat ‘arrogant’ counselors! But hey, I came out with a 4.1 UW GPA for these 2 years, so I’m kinda happy. Have you taken any AP’s in freshie-soph years? I am willing to work weekends so i am dedicated ;)

Does anyone have experience with 5 AP’s? Considering I have never taken AP’s before, here is my revised schedule:

AP Biology

AP Language

AP Economics (both)

AP US History

Honors Chemistry

Honors PreCalc

Study Hall

Does this look rigorous to anyone? And what about courseload, will I be able to manage it if I am wiling to work my week-ends off!?

@loltired I know how that feels… D: I wish I had enough self-control to do the things that would benefit me in the end. Just gonna try to cut out most distractions… TV, internet (sobs) and my phone.

I just got my PSAT scores back today: 189, which, surprisingly (or more like horrifically), is the same score I received last year. Bummer.
I’m planning on memorizing SAT vocab, and taking some SAT writing/reading classes over the summer to get at least 220 on my next PSAT. I’m feeling the pressure now :P
