Anyone doing anything special this summer (pertaining to school of course lol). Scholarships, research, noxious SAT studying?

@desigirl, AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Cal BC. Haven’t started AP Chem or AP Bio self study yet; AP Cal BC is almost finished.

@BattleforLA, what’s a “social life”? Is that another AP class?

Are you guys planning on taking any BS AP classes (ridiculously easy ones) just for the GPA; IE AP Environmental Science, AP Art History, AP Music Theory, AP Chinese if Chinese, AP Spanish if Hispanic, AP Statistics, etc.

@zanelias I am going to a journalism camp! Very excited. Besides that, traveling and SAT studying:books:

@catchinginfinity: Honestly, I can’t complain about how fast this is moving! I just hope that it continues on. It’s nice to talk to people with the same struggles as me. =0)

@TeamRocket: Don’t disconnect from CC! It could at least help you with your AP studying.

@desigirl: Looks like we’re in the same boat then haha. I got a 197 without any studying. So I guess now it’s time to get my butt into gear, haha.

@loltired: Haha, if you already have so many words, then you miiight as well finish those essays. Good luck with those! <3 Also, I TOTALLY feel you about procrastination. It’s my doom. I’m going to find a web blocker to disable certain sites so that I can just focus, ugh. It’s getting that bad.

@texashowler: AP Bio kicked my butt, but I took it as a fish, and it was the first year of the revised test. I did perfectly well though, so you should be fine. Honors Chem and Pre-Calc are pretty easy, I’m in both at the moment. I’m pretty good at math naturally though.

@anonemuss: Um, I don’t know if it’s just at my school, but AP Art History is considered one of the hardest classes at my school. You have to memorize 1,000 artworks. I’m in it now, and the courseload is ridiculous to be honest.

@zanelias
Trying to weasel my way into some professor’s research…or, in case of failure, trying to do something on my own. Shame I have dangerous interests…
@almondjoy
YOU CAN TAKE ALL THESE AP CLASSES SO SOON! I’m super jealous. Our earliest is AP World in 10th.
I have to wait on my SAT scores. Can’t get them until the 8th! Congrats to all of you, though. Great scores
@texanhowler
I’m planning on 5 next year, and everyone basically says that if you’re in a position to consider doing that, you’ll be fine. The fact that you’d be allowed by counselors and grades and stuffs speaks to your strengths.

@loltired - Instead of deleting my Tumblr, I just decided to unfollow a bunch of people. (Now I only follow ~30 people.) Therefore, I’d have less posts to scroll through -> less time spent on Tumblr.
My blog is too precious to be deleted and I actually find really good content relating to school and colleges and interesting articles. I probably learned half of my SAT vocab through Tumblr, actually, haha. (:

@texanhowler - It should be manageable. I’m planning on 5 next year too.

@zanelias - I’m applying to a few camps! Most likely not going to get into any of them, though, so I’m planning on auditioning for a youth orchestra, studying for the PSAT/SAT, taking a bunch of classes, and possibly getting an internship. Oh, and summer homework for all my AP classes will be fun. ):

@anonemuss - Taking AP Stat right now and I highly recommend anyone who wants to self-study an AP to self-study stat. It’s a joke. Probably self-studying for AP Chinese next year.

@desigirl - Does it happen to be J-camp?

@almond - Well, the speed this thread moves at is directly correlated to the amount of time I spend on here. So…I probably wouldn’t be procrastinating if this thread was moving slower.

@louie14: How are you going about getting into some professor’s research? That’s something I really want to do this summer, but I’m unsure of how to go abbout it. Also, it is definitely NOT a thing to be jealous about! =P Honestly, coming into high school taking 2 APs was rough. It really was. And my sophomore year is crazy as well because I’m talking AP World and AP Art History, and both are considered to be some of the harder APs at my school. It’s craziness, my school.

@catchinginfinity: Hey, it’s winter break! It’s supposed to be filled with procrastinating. ;)

Also, I’m officially signing up for a Teen Court thing they have in my area. Hallelujah. I think if I work hard enough in it, I’ll get a leadership position in it as well, even though I’m getting a late start. I’m really excited about it though, which is also awesome. =) I’m also planning to look into this whole intern/research thing…

@anonemuss I’m taking AP Psych and AP Stats if I can get my counselor to switch it to raise my gpa hehehheh. AP Art History is actually considered pretty hard around here… and even the native spanish speakers failed AP Spanish so we stopped offering it lol.

@Almondjoy7 My sister got a blocker for facebook once but I ended up disabling it and I do that every time I get a blocker too… LOL

@Catchinginfinity most of my tumblr is on facebook to be honest so I don’t think tumblr is the actual problem. I’m in all these facebook groups and I feel like I should leave them but if I want back in then that’d be a problem That’s actually great about the SAT vocab though haha I found a blog dedicated to vocab and had weird gifs to help you remember but I forgot to follow oops

@anonemuss
My Hispanic friend has a B in AP Spanish, so I don’t the language AP’s are that much easier for native speakers at my school, but the other AP’s you mentioned are ridiculously easy at my school.

I was only off a few days and the threads are just piling up!
For those who want to boost their vocabulary skills, check out Hot Words for the SAT Barron’s 4th Edition and keep on reading the news and books. Sometimes you find your own voice (maybe it’s just me? :P) that will help you tremendously for the college essays. With that in mind, check out On Writing the College Application Essay by Harry Bauld. It’s a quick read, and it’s helpful.

I was obsessed with facebook freshman year but I barely use them now. Time is too precious!

To directly translate your PSAT score to the SAT score
I got a 183, which is a mega heads-up, but I know I’m only going to get better from there, so to all the 180s, don’t worry!

Take that number and divide it by 240, so I got 0.7625
Then take your percentile, mine’s 89, and multiply it by 2400, which is 2136 (this is your bottom range)
Then your projected score is 2136-2150 (cushion of 20-40 points)

Of course, you’ll only get this projected score next year if you didn’t study too much or study just enough to get by.

@loltired: Haha, I can see as to why that might be a problem! I want to at least try out blockers to see if they’ll help me stay more focused, especially when I get on to the Interwebz. It’s so hard not to get distracted, ugh.

@linnchaplin: Thank you so much for the PSAT → SAT conversion! I’m off to see what my conversion is. I didn’t even study for this one, since it doesn’t count, so I’m hoping that my actual SAT will be muuch higher. Also, I got both Direct Hits books for free when they were having a holiday sale or something a few weeks ago (there was a thread here on CC!), so that’s what I’m using for vocab. I also read pretty frequently, and also have to read the news all the time for debate, so I’m hoping that’ll help with vocab. I missed 5 questions on the PSAT in CR, and FOUR of those were the sentence completions with hard vocab. So, I don’t want to have that happen on the actual SAT. =P

@zanelias, over the summer, I’m planning on finishing up my research work and writing up a draft of my paper to be published. If all goes well, that’ll be what I end up doing.

As for SAT vocab, Direct Hits is the best, I’ve heard.

@almond - Too bad I already started school… ):

@loltired - I feel like Facebook is actually becoming useful for connecting with people. I deleted my Facebook in 7th or 8th grade and I really regret it; a lot of people who I’ve met outside of school ask me for my Facebook now and I don’t have one. You can give someone your number, but unless you’re really close and you plan on texting them, it’s really not the same. I actually made a new Facebook account two days ago but I only have one friend right now. :P

I feel like if you read enough, SAT vocab shouldn’t be that bad…or maybe the vocab on the PSAT was just relatively easy? /: My CR score was pulled down only because of reading comprehension. Maybe I got lucky.

@catchinginfinity, ooooooh you should add me. (only if you want to, of course)

Uhg just found out that the only way I can get an A in AP world history is if I got 100% on the last essay and get a 90% on my final I’ll probably end up with 2 B’s this semester now due to crappy teachers. I have put in so much work but my teacher doesn’t do anything to help us actually understand the material.

@catchinginfinity: That sucks. I am so sorry for you. =’( I’m going back Tuesday and dreading the moment I go back and lose all this relaxation time. Do you have exams coming up or have you already taken them? And I read a lot, although I’ve never made a concious effort to write down words I don’t know, I just use context. So, I’m planning to add words to a flashcard app on my phone that I don’t know, and then review them when I have some down time on the bus or something. I only missed one comprehension question, and it was just a silly mistake, so vocab is definitely my main issue.

@jlh: Aww, I’m so sorry! hugs I’m sure you’ll be able to pull it off though. You’ll just have to really study, and do some practice essays maybe? I’m really fortunate to have a good WHAP teacher, so I have nothing to complain about.

So it looks like I got in to this local PSAT program that I’ve heard gets really good results. Almost everyone at my school is doing it, and the teacher is one of my favorites. It’s two hours every Sunday though, which is going to be a lot on top of all the debate tournaments I’m going to. I also found this super awesome summer internship that I’m probably not going to get into, but I’ll apply anyways. The application is due in March though, but I favorited it anyways to do towards the end of February.

@Team - Yeah sure, PM me the URL of your Facebook or something. (Also, I swear I am not as lame as my 1 friend count. :P)

@almond - Yeah, I have a history test on Tuesday…history just so happens to be my worst subject. Whooo can’t wait.

@Almond, no problem and yep! I saw that thread and at first I thought maybe all of you saw it but sometimes I miss great threads so didn’t want any to slip :)

My worst for CR is organization and ideas, but it’s even uglier for relationships of sentences & paragraphs for Writing.

@almond, hope you don’t mind sharing this summer internship, does it gravitates towards science & math or humanities?
