High school class of 2016

@almond, thank you! and yeah I think I will go on the textbook website because my dumb teacher has told us that she will basically take all question from there for tests now. So stupid :stuck_out_tongue: But uhg I will have a 3.72 GPA UW if I get a B in this!

Have you guys started studying for the ACT/SAT? I just bought 2 prep books yesterday on amazon.

They have PSAT programs? omg
my sister’s college didn’t even accept national merit scholarships or something

@jlh which books did you buy?

@catchinginfinity really? omg i feel like the opposite is going on, facebook is dying for me and my friends in real life

@almondjoy yes ugh i feel you. literally today, i told myself i would go on the computer and get off in 15 minutes and now it’s been an hour and i have no idea what i’m doing. I have like zero self control hahah.

@catchinginfinity: Are you in AP World? I wish you the best of luck with your test though! I’m sure you’ll defeat it no probs.

@linnchaplin: It’s a political thing in my area. I’m in Debate, like I said somewhere, so I think those skills will help me out. Like I said, I doubt I’ll actually get in because it’s pretty esteemed. But I may as well try!

@jlh: Yeah, my teacher always says that she doesn’t use the textbook website, but inevitably, questions from there always end up on our tests and quizzes. It’s a god-send, I swear! I hope that’ll help you out! And I’ve barely started studying for the SAT. I was supposed to actually start going through my PSAT tonight, but I got distracted by the Internet. =P

So I just found out about this USABO thing and I’m sad I didn’t see it earlier. My school is really good at the whole biology thing [we have a medical program and everything] so I think it would have been perfect. I think it’s too late to start a team now though. :/

ETA: @loltired: YES there are PSAT programs. My school is literally crazy. I don’t even know. I figure it’ll prep me for SAT, though, so I’m going for it. Also, I don’t even know where the last 4 hours went. I got on the Internet and did not get off. Um, oops…

OH well best of luck with that. My school literally does not care about PSATs or SATs or anything. I find myself awake at 3 am watching random youtube videos and browsing CC
:(

My school is so flipping competitive about grades + PSAT. I don’t even know why there’s so much fuss about PSAT, but there it is. It can be so grating sometimes. It’s also irritating that we have no flipping academic clubs though, even though it’s such a competitive school. I don’t get it.

Yeah, I’ve been checking CC and looking at random college stuff all day today. I got swallowed up by the EA Decision thread for my dream college as well, despite the fact that I have to read all of Angels and Demons before Tuesday and write a 3 page book critique about it.

Yeah. Oops.

The highest PSAT score at my school was a 228 and that kid was the try-hard kid who’s mom teaches AP Calculus. As for SATs… I think most people are just praying to get over 1800 and be in the mid 50% for UNC.

Have fun with that book critique…
Yeah, I stalked the EA decision thread for my supposed dream college as well, it was a bit depressing… but at least the deferred people still have a chance. What’s your dream college?

@loltired: I have to say, I’m a little jealous of your score. I know a freshman that got a 213 with “minimal studying” (yeah, don’t think so). It’s so competitive around here that people don’t tell each other grades, and are always hesitant to help others because that might hurt their GPA. It sucks, the constant competition. I’m not sure what the highest PSAT score was this year, I’ve heard of a 235 I think. Last a year, a kid got a 240. I know sophomores last year that scored in the 220s and 230s. Even with the competition, it’s kind of nice to have friends that are serious about school, although the comparing that goes on is a bit depressing. :/

/end mini rant

Yeah, not excited about the book critique. I like reading and all, but not 700 pages…

Yeah, the EA decision was both motivating and depressing. It was nice to see that the essays pulled a lot of weight. I think that if I spend a lot of time on my essays, I’ll be able to write some good ones, especially the essays that really allow you to showcase creativity. Voice is also something I’ve never had issues with, so I’m crossing my fingers.

My dream college is UChicago. I lived near Chicago and used to go there all the time, and loved the city. Plus, the college is a little more eclectic, and I love that. My parents would also be ok with sending me there because I have family nearby. It’s just so. hard. to get into. I haven’t done college visits or anything yet though, so my dream college list is probably going to change. Although I think UChicago will always be at the top. =) What about you?

Edited to Add: If only I could write that much for my critique, haha.

^I got a 212 with no studying, so I don’t think a 213 would be that bad to manage without studying.

I like UChic, but omg the copious amounts of mail they send out is annoying. Also, @almondjoy, do you by any chance go to TAMS?

@almondjoy7 lol I know how you feel. My school is like that too. Very competitive. But students are nice and everything.

My friends sister is a senior now and she got a PERFECT PSAT, SAT, and ACT score. Yes, a 240, a 2400, and a 36. ISN’T THAT CRAZY!!! And she is super modest about it too!!!

@almondjoy My mom was actually kind of disappointed lol but I honestly didn’t care too much. I got an email from collegeboard with the access code and I went online and looked over the questions I missed… Wow, I feel so stupid. I’m glad I didn’t order the QAS for the SAT because looking at the stuff I missed on that would have probably also been embarrassing.

Mmm yeah competition can be nice, but there’s a point where it gets too be a bit too much.

700 pages? LOL I think the most we’ve ever had to read for school was Jane Eyre, which was 300-400 pages, and everyone was complaining.

UChicago has some really interesting essay topics! Like honestly, where’s Waldo? and it’s such an amazing school. I’m sure your essays will be great!
I haven’t done college visits either, but my parents are thinking about taking me to the New England area to look at college over the summer. I really want to visit UChicago but it’s a bit far from where I live. :frowning:

My top choice would be Princeton, which will DEFINITELY be a reach. Everything I’ve read about it has been appealing to me, except for possibly the eating clubs. I was flipping through a book of colleges by collegeboard and I feel like I really identified with it, if that makes any sense. I’ve yet to actually visit (or maybe I have when my sister was visiting colleges, I can’t remember) but I can’t wait.

@desigirl Wow, congrats to her!

ETA: I use “like” a lot. Hah, oops.

@TeamRocket: I really wish I could get a 212 without studying. Le sigh. No such luck from me. And no, I don’t go to TAMS. I do have a friend that’s applying though. Is there any reason you’re asking? =)

@desigirl: Yeah, the people are decently nice here too, so I guess I don’t have too much to complain about. And also, can I be your friend’s sister?! I wish I could be that perfect. It’s awesome that she’s modest about it, though. I hate those annoying people that shove all their achievements in your face.

@loltired: Yeah, my school automatically gave me my packet and everything back, so I got to see what stupid I mistakes made and my thinking for it as well (I’m the kind of person that writes all over her tests). I’m hoping since so many are stupid mistakes, I’ll be able to fix them easily.

Some kid just texted me saying that he’s already done with the notes (which takes at least 2 hours per chapter) for the next 4 chapters, for APAH. I haven’t even done this stupid book critique that’s due Thursday. shakes fist at world Yeah, we were supposed to read the 700 pages over break. Um, didn’t happen. I have no regrets, though, really. I needed the relaxation.

Yeah, I’ve been going through the essay threads (procrastinating FTW!) and I am in love with the amount of creativity they allow in their essays. The Waldo one? PERFECT. And thanks! <3 Yeah, I know my parents will be hesitant about college visits, but I’m going to try and convince them to take me to New England so I can take a look at all the colleges there. They might see it as a waste of money though, so I’m not sure about it. I’m really lucky to have family near Chicago, so when we very conveniently go to visit them, I will very conveniently take a college visit to UChicago. When I go, I’ll tell you as much as I can! I’ll tell you before I go, and you can PM questions and stuff. =)

Loltired, I really think you can get into Princeton. Seriously. You’re already so motivated as a sophomore, and if you keep t hings up, you’ll get there. We’ll both go for those awesome PSAT/SAT scores and get into our dream colleges! I haven’t read much about Princeton aside from it being an Ivy, although now I’m off to do that. I totally get the identifying thing, that’s exactly how I feel about UChicago. Do let me know when you visit! <3

Haha, I use like a lot, but the debater in me cringes every time I do, so I’m trying to decrease my use of it.

Oh I got that packet! I never bothered to look through it, though. Lazy problems. You could definitely raise your score significantly if you’re able to cut out those careless errors and such!

Wow, doing homework over break. Crazy. I’m glad I’m not taking APAH though… sounds like a lot of work. :/

That future visit to UChicago though… sounds really convenient  But that sounds great, hope you enjoy the visit! Maybe you can pick up some deep dish pizza along the way, hahah. My sister landed a job in Manhattan and it starts next summer, so I imagine we’ll be helping her move into her apartment, and I guess while we’re in the area, we’ll take a look at schools. I hope you get take a few tours, they sound really informational and it’s probably a great way to get a feel of the college.

Wow, thank you, that’s so nice of you to say so. I hope we both do!

You debate? That’s really cool! What kind? I’m technically a member of our 5 person debate club/team/whatever you want to call it, but we’ve yet to actually go to any debates and no one actually knows how to debate.

@almond - This girl I know who got into UChi posted her essays and art supplement online (since the deadline is past now) and they are absolutely phenomenal. It kind of suppresses my hope for ever getting accepted there to be honest. :P

Yeah, I’m in AP World. Thanks for your faith in me, but there’s a 90% chance I’m going to get under a 90. D:

@catchinginfinity- haha thanks! it feels good being back at CC

@linchaplin (ahh sorry if i spelled that wrong)- Thanks for the CR vocab list! I realized that a little less than half the total incorrect answers were from the vocab section, so I gotta memorize more… It’s weird though… I memorize many a day :/

As for all the facebook/ tumblr conversation, I’m pretty much not allowed to go on fb anymore so now I just go on it whenever I’m done with my work  I was going to deactivate it but my birthday is coming up soon and I like receiving birthday wishes from people LOL And I dont have a tumblr so :p

Is it just me or are the SAT II language tests extremely hard? I’m Korean (native, born there and raised there for half my life), and I didn’t even get everything correct. I really like Chinese so I was going to study and take the SAT II Chinese test, but man. It is so hard D: And that made me thinking… If I got like 4 questions wrong in my first language, what am I gonna do with a third language (English is second)…

@Almondjoy: I actually know a person in TAMS, so I was wondering if you went there lol. Also, it’s super competitive as well, which matched the description you gave, so I thought that I might as well ask. Also, you debate? I do as well! Freshman year, we didn’t do much lol, but we (my partner and I; I do public forum) went to our first tournament in October (I think) and, against our coach’s urging, signed up for varsity instead of junior varsity. We got quarterfinalist, so I think that with a bit more practice, we can definitely break semis and maybe even get to state and eventually nationals (I can dream :I)

@catchinginfinity, is there a link to the essays?

@imhkim: the language tests are known for their insane difficulty, especially for non-native speakers. Typically, while many of the SAT IIs need to be 750+ to be competitive (790+ in math II’s case), a language SAT II need only be 700+ to be competitive. You could also look into AP Korean/AP Chinese, since the curves on AP exams tend to be more lenient.

My friend got a 780 on the Chinese SAT II and apparently it’s in the 24th percentile LOL he was so upset

@TeamRocketGrunt- ahh thank you for making me feel better! I’ll probably take AP Chinese senior year, but idek if I’ll be qualified hahah And AP Korean… I’ll think about it! I feel like it wont look as impressive to get a 5 if I’m already native. (But then again, I might not even get a 5 so lol)

@loltired- 24th percentile? LOL whaaat but still I’d be mad happy with a 780!

Oh and one random question- Do you guys play Quizup? It’s an educational app game for Apple users onlyy

@imhkim
From what I’ve heard, the Japanese SAT II is easy because it only uses romaji rather than actual Japanese writing. I guess that’s the only language one I’m taking because I can’t read or write my own native language.

Ohh, I see I see. But Japanese still looks really hard, at least that’s what I think. Good luck Jawmess! :)

I am addicted to Quizup hahahah
I’m a level 40 or something in logos

and yep @imhkim I couldn’t really believe it either but I looked it up on the collegeboard website
