High school class of 2016

I just started playing quizup again. I started playing thesaurus because people have some hilarious guesses

Someone got the mcdonalds logo wrong… THey guessed the golden arch

The problem with the language SAT II tests isn’t just the difficulty; it’s the fact that a TON of native speakers take them, and that drives the curve to insane levels.

@Jawmess, what’s your native language? I can speak my native language at an intermediate-proficient level (not fluent anymore lol), but I can’t read or write it. I wonder if we can still say “fluent” in our applications if we can speak a language but not read/write in it?

I’m addicted to Quizup too haha level 43 in math general! And I’ve never played the thesaurus one but I wanna try it now! I’m in level 12 in logos and how could anyone get McDonalds wrong :/

@Teamrocketgrunt- yah I agree. I see natives taking their native language test and acing the testss. They do worsen the curve, and unfortunately, by a lot.

@Jawmess - Yeah, the Chinese SAT II uses the pronunciation letters so it’s actually not necessary to have an extensive knowledge of words if you’re a native speaker and you can speak fluently.

@imhkim - It’s probably just because of the curve that day, don’t worry too much. But I know for Chinese, A LOT of native Chinese speakers/readers take the SAT II…so the curve may be even harder on that one.

I practiced the Chinese SAT II once and the only weird part was surprisingly the listening portion. The speaker had a very strong accent. :P

At my school, standardized testing really sucks. The Counselors make fun of you and say that your trying to hard when a sophomore tries to take the PSAT. My school does not offer the SAT and they offer the ACT but not the writing portion so you have to take the ACT twice if your college wants the writing portion.

@loltired: Yeah, I’ve just started going through my packet because I’m talking a prep course (the one I talked about before!) that starts in January, so I want to know where I should especially be focusing on.

Honestly, it really wasn’t doing homework over break, it’s me doing homework in the final days of break to make-up for all the homework I was SUPPOSED to have done. =P Yeah, I’m one of those people that hears something is super hard and that I shouldn’t do, and sees it as a challenge. So naturally, when I heard how hard APAH was, I was all like “How hard could it possibly be?”

Yeah. It really can be that hard. I don’t regret taking it, though. It’s a nice class.

Haha, yes, my future visit IS quite convenient. I can’t wait to go back to the city and enjoy it. <3 And that’s pretty convenient for you that you get to help out your sister when she moves!!

And yeah, I am a debater. I’m so lucky that I go to a school where the debate team is pretty hardcore. The seniors this year are all phenomenal, and it’s a student-led team, so I get taught by them. We’re a part of the NFL, and I do Congressional Debate. It’s time consuming, for sure. I have debate tourneys every weekend in January, ugh. So there goes my Fridays and Saturdays. =P I really love it though, so I don’t mind TOO much. ;)

@catchinginfinity: That is still a good 10% that you’ll get above a 90!! =) Also, like TRG said, is there a link for those UChicago essays? You’ve gotten me curious, haha.

@TeamRocketGrunt: Haha, yeah, I hear TAMS is really competitive, but no, I don’t go there, although my school is one of the top public schools in the state. It’s known for its competitiveness. And yes, I do debate! I really do love it. <3 It takes practice, but I’m sure that you’ll do great especially since you made it to quarters in Varsity!! I do Congressional, but have friends that are in PFD. I really, really want to get state quald this year, but it’s coming down to the wire, tbh. I have 6 points, and I need 12. Hopefully I’ll be able to qual, since I’m going to so many tournaments in January. I’m sure you’ll be able to get to state and even nats!! It just takes some pure hard work. =)

@Pi: Aww, I’m so sorry, that sucks. They force all the s’mores at my school to take the PSAT, and they expect everybody to do well too. As for the SAT/ACT issue, could you take it at a nearby school?

And for whoever asked about Quizlet: I haven’t heard much about it. Is it an app worth getting?

Off to force myself to read Angels and Demons. Ugh.

@loltired I got The Official SAT Study Guide 2nd edition and The Real ACT 3rd edition. I hope that they come soon! I did awful on my PSAT (186 :() but I was sick that day and ran out of time so I know that I can do better.

@almond Ok thanks for the tip! I’m so scared for that final and of course it is my 1st one :stuck_out_tongue: and btw I bet you could do so well at U Chicago! I live near there and it is such a beautiful campus!

And about Quizlet, it is seriously amazing! I use it all the time! You can get it on iPhones and iPads but it also works on computers. It’s basically like online flashcards but you can get tested on them in all different ways.

@almond - Her blog has a lot of private info so I’d rather not share the link publicly. /:

@jhl - I second that! Quizlet is also super awesome for subjects like art history because you have the option of uploading pictures on the flashcards.

@jlh: Don’t be scared!! You’ll be fine. <3 And at least you have it first, so you can get it done with! Also, thank you so much!! You don’t even know how much that means to me. I’ve been dying to go to UChicago for such a long time. I’m glad to hear it’s a beautiful campus. =)

@catchinginfinity: No problem! And thanks for the tip about Quizlet. As you totally know by now, I need help with APAH, so I’ll get the app and try it out tonight.

So, I had a talk with my dad about college tuition and stuff. He hasn’t said anything about it before, even when I prodded him, so it was a little surprising when he brought up. Basically, he was like “If I pay for your college tuition now, then the rates for all the schools will be locked! You just have to stay in Texas for college!”. He KNOWS how much I hate Texas too. I can’t go to school here. Seriously. So I freaked out a little, and was like “Why don’t we wait to look at colleges?”. By the end of the discussion, he said he would start saving up a fund, but he wouldn’t do the whole ‘locking in the tuition’ thing. Thank humanity, seriously. That was a scary discussion. =P

However, I asked him about doing piano lessons, and he agreed, so now I’m thrilled. I played piano for three years before I moved, but I never picked it up after I moved. I’m so in love with playing piano, there’s just something about playing beautiful music that makes me so happy. Now I get to do lessons, which is just beyond amazing for me. =)

/end storytime

Back into the Art History cave for me.

@catchinginfinity- I’d be happy with over a 600, honestly. I also heard how a bunch of native Chinese speakers take the test (but same goes for other nationalities), so I just decided not to take SAT II Chinese after all.

@Almondjoy7- okay btw i love your usernamee. almonds are so good lol and I’m the one who mentioned Quizup, and its Quizup not Quizlet. Quizup is worth getting; it’s an educational app that tests you on stuff like math and ancient greek history and physics and so many more. It’s addicting though. But yeah, Quizlet is also worth getting; I use it all the time.

I have a question. Should I sign up for the SAT II world history subject test in June? Is it better to get them over with? I took honors world history last year and my school doesn’t offer AP World history so shouldn’t I just take it?

@Pi12345 I would check to make sure that the Honors World History curriculum completely covers what the SAT II tests on and review some of the material, since you took it last year.

@imhkim: Haha, thank you! Almondjoys are my favorite, of course. I’m in love with them. I guess I’ll be checking out both Quizup and Quizlet then! I only have lame apps on my new phone anyways, and having educational games to play in those few spare minutes might be super beneficial for me. Thanks for letting me know! <2

@Pi: I was in AP Bio last year, and my teacher was all like, “Sign up for the SAT 2! You’ll be fine if you’re studying for the AP exam!”. So I did, and went in with no prep for the SAT 2, and ended up getting a 720. =P So, I would definitely be careful if you choose to do it, and study hard. The thing is, taking it sophomore year might be beneficial so you don’t have to worry about it later.

Midterms start this Thursday & we go back tomorrow.

@55al00m- We start tomorrow too, but our midterms start on the 21st. The teachers all probably have to teach around two more units and give us more tests before midterms.

I go back Tuesday and we usually get late start on those days. Nope I have to go to 0 period 6:55 for my AP Chem lab. I think I’ll just show up late anyways.

My zero period starts at 5:30

My school starts at 7:30…
