High school class of 2016

I CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS NEW LAYOUT. I was really looking forward to something new, but it just feels totally foreign and tiny and it’s really inconvenient. Just blergh. I can only hope they change it back.

@loltired: YAY for the research opportunity!! Do you mind sharing how you went about getting it? I’ve been really considering getting one, but it just seems so overwhelming, you know?

@TeamRocketGrunt: YAY for the SAT 2 not being as bad as you expected!! Despite skipping a few, I’m sure you’re going to get the score that you’re shooting for. =)

@hailbo: I totally agree. The only good thing is now that the HSL posts count. Can’t say I like anything else. The new layout is just confusing me. =P

//

Well, I got back from my debate tournament utterly exhausted because I had to debate 7 hours straight on Friday, and then the same with only a ten minute break between rounds on Satruday. Never again will I go to a swing tournament. =P I did pretty good, I guess, but I still want to do good at a more legitimate tournament, haha. But now my PSAT Prep Camp starts today, and I have to go take a diagnostic test in an hour. Then I have a class right after. So, I haven’t even thought about my homework yet…

Oops?

I’m also trying to figure out this whole SAT thing. I want to be have a basic plan in place, so I know when my studying has to get really intense. My mom mentioned yesterday, after seeing me completely drained from my tourney, that I “wouldn’t be doing this much debate next year because of my SAT/PSAT”. The thing is, I love debate, and the only way I’ve been able to get better is by going to a tournament almost every weekend. I don’t think I’m going to get state qualed next year like I magically did this year without going to a bajillion. So I’m now thinking about taking the SAT in October just to get it done with. Unsure, though.

Do you guys have any idea of when you’re taking the SAT junior year?

My dad works at the university heheh I feel like such a cheater but then again, I guess I could have emailed people myself…

Glad you did well at the debate tournament! And aahh that PSAT class, sounds like a terrible way to spend your weekend to be honest haha. My parents want me to retake the SAT in June of this year or sometime before then and just be completely done with it so I can focus on other things. Hoping to get 2350+, which would be doable if I stop making math mistakes and learn a bit more grammar. If I’m not satisfied (or my parents aren’t), I’ll retake the SAT for the last time probably in December. I’ll probably end up taking a subject test spring of next year or maybe Spanish in the fall of senior year. Is anyone considering taking the ACT instead?

I took the ACT ( got a 35) but my essay score is horrible, so I’ll be sending my SAT after I take it.

I can’t get the iPhone app to work with this new layout…sigh.

but a 35 is great sigh i doubt essays count for that much anyway
especially since it’s all timed and stuff

I need to improve my SAT writing score by at least 10 points because I want 750+ for all the sections but I’m so afraid I’ll do terribly on the essay

@slytherclaw12 doesn’t work on android either.

My essay score was a 9/12 :(

whats you guys’ ideal SAT score? jw

@TeamRocketGrunt
Sometimes I’m not sure if you’re trolling or fishing for compliments or what. A 35 is near perfect…

what’s a swing debate tournament?

Are you serious
9/12 is not bad what
what
what

I got a 10/12 on the SAT essay and honestly I was just praying for 7+

@ejames2016 2400 :wink:
but in all honestly I’m aiming for a 2350, so I need an 80 point increase

@TheAtlantic, my composite score is good (not going to shy away from my accomplishments), but a 9/12 for the essay is abysmal. If you look at my post, you’ll see that I specifically say, “…my essay score is horrible.” You can have a 36, but a low essay score will still screw you over.

Not trolling (technically, this isn’t trolling; actual trolling died out in 2006, and 'trolling" now isn’t actually trolling, and I’m definitely not fishing for compliments. Getting compliments from a bunch of strangers online is kind of pointless).

@ejames2016, 2400 obvi :smiley: I’d be happy with a 2300+ though.

//

I looked at the SAT essay, and the topics just seem easier in general. The ACT focuses on stuff that’s “relevant to high school students.” The SAT gives you topics that are really easy to fabricate info on.

I’d rather have a topic relevant to high school students than a topic about capitalism…

@Almondjoy7
Are you trying to qualify for NCFLs/Have you already had quals?

I’d rather have a topic on the merits/evils of capitalism than a topic asking “Is social networking good for high school students?” The former is much easier to fabricate historical info about and, therefore, much easier to back up in thirty minutes. If you toss in a few high-level vocab words, that’s pretty much a guaranteed 10+/12.

@loltired: Lol, you are so lucky that you have a parent that works at a university!! We have a career day thing coming up, and it’s almost all doctors, so I’m going to be asking about research and if they do any. Because I wanna go into pre-med, hopefully one of these doctors can help me a little in regards to finding someone I can research with or what I can even research.

I’m starting to think that the October SAT is going to be the best way to go for me. It’s not offered any earlier, and I want to get it done ASAP. With finals in June, though, I don’t think I’ll be able to take it then… Or else that would be a really good idea. Also, when did you originally take the SAT?

The ACT isn’t really an option for me. I really want National Merit Scholar, and so I’ll have to study a ton for the PSAT, so there’s no real reason for me to not take the SAT after that.

@TeamRocketGrunt: Seriously, that ACT score is GOOD! With or without the essay, you’re kicking major standardized test butt already. ;)

@TheAtlantic: A swing tournament is basically two tournaments squished into one school over just one weekend. You have double the number of rounds to go to, and basically, it’s utterly exhausting. But, you have double the chances of breaking, and double the chances of getting state qual points, which is why so many people go.

@ejames2016: Like @loltired and @TeamRocketGrunt up there, I’d love a 2400. I’m realistically shooting for a 2300+, hoping for a 2350+, and dreaming of a 2400. :wink: Unlike those two up there, though, my PSAT scores are abysmal and I probably don’t have a real shot at getting that high of a score. =P

//

So I got back from my PSAT camp, having taken a diagnostic test from Barron’s. I’m pretty skeptical of how helpful this course is going to be, but since I’m signed up, I’m going to continue going. We got the newest Barron’s and Barron’s flashcards to work with. I’m thinking I’ll still supplement the camp with my own studying from home, out of other prep books. I’m too skeptical to put my entire trust in just one prep book.

Oh, Georgia doesn’t fly like that. We also don’t have a “points” system for qualifying to state. Basically, at most tournaments, anyone that makes semi’s will qual. It does sound fun though. How does the point system work?

Here, the point system is that you have to have eight (I think) NFL points from that year’s tourneys to qualify for state. You get 1 NFL point for QF, two for SF, and four for finalist. (I may be wrong in the numbers, but that’s how it generally works).

Wow, how big are pools at the state tourney then? Here about 30 qualify.

That’s probably a good idea @almondjoy7! I used PR for SAT prep at first and did a diagnostic test but it was really not similar to the collegeboard practice tests at all. I took it for the first time in 7th grade for a talent search (1580 loool) and took it again this past October. What’s the National Merit Scholar qualifying score where you live? It’s 212 here, at least for last year, hahah

My school kinda pushes juniors to take the SAT in the spring, and I think my score would be highest then, since I would have taken AP Lang and pre calc. The thing is I’m taking 4 AP exams and 2-3 subject tests in the spring…

On the other hand, I don’t want to take it in the winter because that’s my sports season.

ain’t no way I’ll be ready by the fall…

I wanna do nmsf but the cutoff is super high in MD (223)

@TeamRocketGrunt, did u get my PM?

Looking through PF ballots from tournaments for evidence/contentions…
I feel 0 shame.
