Hello all! Fellow '16er here. So glad I found this thread. Its almost the end of sophomore year and I feel like i’m gonna explode! I need advice. I’m taking APWH this year and am feeling hopeless bcus my teacher is breezing through topics…like a war per day lol. Anyways the AP exam is getting closer and I need some tips on how to study on my own, which books I should get, that sorta stuff. Thankss.

@TheGreatCatsbyx - I play the flute too if you didn’t catch that in my other post whooo :D

@PoisonIvy20 - I liked Princeton Review! I’ve heard from other people that PR is a given for world history too, but some also like Barron’s because it over-prepares you. PR reads really nicely imo. (:

@PoisonIvy20

If you want a concise review, get Princeton Review. You could get Barron’s if you think you can barrel through it because it’s kind of dense. You could also get REA’s Crash Course or watch John Green’s Crash Course videos on YouTube.

For the debaters: http://www.speechanddebate.org/aspx/documents/newsDetail.aspx?newsid=155&navid=&pnavid=

Hey guys, my schedule is due tomorrow. Right now I have:
APUSH
AP PSYCH
AP STAT
Advanced Math 3
STEM Physics
English (don’t ask)
Debate/(Sociology) or Spanish IV

As far as my last class is concerned, what should I go with

@TheAtlantic I would go with Spanish for the last one, unless you are extremely opposed to taking Spanish or extremely in favor of taking debate. This is because a little persistence and more advanced language skill shows through that way, and I believe you can take AP Spanish after this (or at least that’s how it works at our school).

Also, assuming you are part of the debate program at your school, do you guys just find tournaments to get involved and sign up, then go?

@TheAtlantic
I’m also having scheduling issues
APUSH
AP Psychology
AP Physics 1
AP Calc BC
AP Computer Science
Reg English 11
It’s like the 99th schedule I’ve come up with and I have until Friday.

@Woandering There’s no AP Spanish at my school. But thanks for the input!

As for your question, Umm, I’m not really sure what you mean by “sign up and go”. Basically tournaments are usually posted on websites like: http://joyoftournaments.com/, https://www.tabroom.com/index/index.mhtml, http://www.speechwire.com/ (and there may be one or two others that I’m forgetting)

From that, the coach registers those that are competing, and then go on the given day and compete. Obviously there’s practices involved and stuff like that, but basically that’s how it usually goes.

If you have any more questions just ask. Also, do you mind me asking what state you’re in? Debate kinda varies a bit depending

@TheAtlantic Debate sounds a little like MUN then. I want to get my MUN teacher interested in Debate, since great MUN opportunities are sparse.

I’m in California, and I love debating. I don’t like MUN as much because it’s more of a short term popularity contest than actual debate is.

So just to clarify, am I right in understanding that the teacher signs students up for a particular debate, we train, we go and debate. If it really is that simple, I’m definitely doing it next year.

Also, can you explain a little about the different types of debate? On the website you posted before (previous comment), there seemed to be performances rather than direct debates.

Public forum debate tho

lol @TheAtlantic–is it just me, or have a good number of the topics been pretty polarizing? I mean, I get the whole having resolutions that can be debated well on both sides thing, but that immigration and Supreme Court case ones were just terrible.

I may go into LD next year as well as PF. Getting kind of tired in PF. Got any experience with LD? How is it?

I just realized the April Fools joke. ;ja;sldfjsdfj;sldjkl

Hmm…I don’t know how the league in California is (as far as qualifying for State or District/Nationals), but it’s the same basic structure. Debate can sometimes be a year-long popularity contest, because tournaments are pretty frequent. :D. I think I’ve done like 3 in a month at one point.

There are three main categories of events (technically there are only 2, but I’ll divide them into 3)

Interpretation:
Interpretation is basically acting without props, and in Duo Interpretation, is acting without props, and without touching or making eye contact with your parter. Interpretation events are

Humorous Interpretation
Dramatic Interp
and Duo Interp
And then there’s Prose & Poetry

Address:
Address events are basically public speaking to the judge:
Original Oratory (You write a speech & deliver it)
Extemporaneus Speaking (You have 30 minutes to prepare for a 7 minute speech on a topic you draw)
Impromptu (You give a random 3 minute speech {it’ s usually kinda funny} on a drawn topic)

Debate:
Policy Debate: 2-parters vs 2 parters debateHonestly, I can’t explain it, because it’s just too much.
Lincoln Douglas Debate: The topic changes every two months, and you debate about it on a moral/philosophical level, and argue why your values outrank their values etc.
PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE: 2 on 2 debate where you debate a “ripped from the headlines” or “burning question” topic that changes every month. It’s the easiest to learn, and most easy to understand. The format is (Person 1A delivers a prewritten speech) 4 minutes 4 minutes
(Person 2A delivers a rebuttal/spontaneus speech) 4 minutes 4 minutes
(Person 1A delivers a summary that is spontaneus speech) 2 min 2 min
(Person 2A delivers a closing speech that is spontaneous explaining why they won) 2 min [2 min]

There are also events like “Radio Speaking” "Storytelling’ “Duet Acting” “Impromptu Acting”, but not all states offer them, and it’ll depend on what your state does (mine doesn’t offer these)

@TeamRocketGrunt

I know nothing about LD.
The Supreme Court was okay, but I only debated it at State. and then ummm…immigration, I actually liked the immigration topic, but my pro “path to citizenship” ended up being more offensive than my neg. The gender classrooms topic is dumb. Extremely dumb. I’m not happy with that one at all.

Of the things I would do, it’d have to be Extemp or Prose/Poetry, or OO if I had to leave PF. But I’m okay with PF for now.

EDIT: Honestly, some of those April Fools Day changes are necessary.

<a href=“Jason Aldean - Big Green Tractor - YouTube”>Jason Aldean - Big Green Tractor - YouTube;

WHY DOES THIS EXIST
IT’S PRETTY MUCH A EUPHEMISM OMG

@TheAtlantic AP psych may overlap with stat. My whole first quarter in ap psych was history/statistical methods/brain biology. Haven’t take ap stat yet though, so can’t confirm

So, what are you guys planning on doing this summer?

@Foodlover001: research, Disney World, maybe China or Japan

@TeamRocket I agree about the polarizing debate resolutions. That NSA one was especially controversial, considering that pretty much everyone dislikes the NSA. But LD isn’t that much better. There was an LD resolution about whether or not voting should be compulsory, and you can probably surmise that most people are against forcing people to vote.

Cool. I traveled to India last summer, so I’m not traveling out of the country this year. @-)

I’m in Latin America this summer. Should be fun. ^^

@TheAtlantic: HAHAHA that debate link was exactly what I needed. So perfect. Thanks for sharing.

@TheAtlantic Thank you! Do you think it would be better to ask our MUN teacher or Speech teacher to sponsor debate? Speech teacher would be more fitting, but the MUN teacher could easily add debate to the list of activities we do every year.
