High school class of 2016

@Apollo11‌
Will you be going to community college, then?

@Almondjoy7: going for physics and chem.

@TeamRocketGrunt‌

I could and I’d still be able to be a multi-millionaire or do whatever I wish to do

@6alibah‌

Currently it is:

Reach: Cambridge, MIT, University of Chicago
Match: University of Florida, Georgia Tech
Safety: Not sure yet. Probably will be University of Hawaii West Oahu and another, closer school

Oh I wonder what it’s like living in Hawaii.

@letmeseetheworld - I visited some relatives there once. They said that it gets to be really humid in the fall. The weather was surprisingly nice for the summer. But all of their schools are not that great.

@letmeseetheworld‌

If you’ve ever been to Goa or Bali, it’s about the same. Great place though, just a bit expensive and isolated. There is BYU-Hawaii though, and that’s not half-bad

@Almondjoy7 Since we have a pretty small public school, I actually just started to organize those clubs for our school. I’m probably going to prep for USAMO and USABO, and maybe the chem one, not sure.

@TeamRocketGrunt I’ve seen your other threads, any tips on preparing for USAMO, USABO, and possibly USNCO? Do you think all three together next year would be too much, along with (maybe) 7 AP courses?

@alzhao: For USABO, read Campbell and Raven’s. For USAMO, read AoPS Vol I and II. For USNCO, Zumdahl and/or Atkins is sufficient for the open. You need to know orgo for the national exam.

Doing all three is a significant undertaking (especially if you hope to do well), and combined with 7 AP courses, it may be quite difficult indeed. I’d suggest doing an “easy” one (bio) and one of the harder ones.

@TeamRocketGrunt @alzhao‌
I’d just like to point out that even the “easiest” one, USABO, would require 1-4 hours of consistent, hardcore studying everyday. The people at USABO want you to memorize charts in Campbell’s for example, and even Alberts and Voet’s can come into play

@observeraffect‌ How are you preparing for applying to Cambridge?

I’m interested in Cambridge, too, and I’ve had to do quite a bit of research to know what I really should do. Still not 100% certain yet. I just sent them another email this morning. Should be certain after their reply.

@alzhao‌ I’m preparing for USAMO currently. The other kids I know who made it in spent at least an hour a day, if that helps any. Since you’re starting late, you’ll have to put in more work than that, if that’s what you’re interested in.

@Woandering‌ I’ve been reading ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■, researching the main offers, and I’ve been emailing them when I’ve had questions. A huge part of why I’m taking 6 APs next year is to get into it. The prospectus for your potential major will help you a lot. And knowing which of the colleges you’ll apply to is important as well, as some colleges have different requirements.

It just seems so hard to have to wait until AP scores are released senior year to confirm an offer.

@observeraffect If you’re good enough, I think they can make unconditional offers too. Rare though. What course do you want to take? And what’s your favorite college so far? I’ll be taking Computer Science with part 2 in Management, and my favorite college is St Johns. I’m going to visit this summer, so that may change.

What’s the “main offers”?

@IsometricKiwi‌ Are you from New Zealand? I am!

By main offers, I’m referring to what they require applicants to have to get in. And Mathematics is a course which they cannot give an unconditional offer in, due to requiring the STEP. I’ll be applying for that or Computer Science at Churchill College, depending on if my school is willing to offer the STEP to me.

@observeraffect I was actually wondering about STEP. Because first year computer science is with math and another subject, I don’t know if I should do computer science with 2 maths or computer science with 1 math and 1 psychology. STEP might be too much fuss, although a test center is half an hour from here.

Are you looking at any other universities in the UK as nearer to match schools? I don’t think it could be classified as my match, but I also added University of Edinburgh to my list. It’s more similar to a US university in structure, but I like it.

By the way, why did you choose Churchill College?

@Woandering‌ oooh I wish! Oregon, USA for me (my username refers to the fruit) :)

@IsometricKiwi Aww was looking forward to a Kiwi applying to US universities. Glad you like the fruit tho.

@alzhao‌ @Apollo11‌

Yes, but unlike USABO, you have to have well developed problem solving skills for USNCO, USAPhO, and USAMO. So USABO would require relatively less investment.

Oh yeah, @TeamRocketGrunt‌, I agree, I just wanted to make it clear that the “easiest” one was still incredibly hard

@Woandering - Nope, just Cambridge. I chose Churchill due to the architecture, the spacious rooms, the fact that it only needs four 5s on AP tests, and it’s archives center.
