High School Class of 2017

Does anyone know of any good medical/health related summer programs? I plan to volunteer at a hospital this summer though

I’m also only applying to one really selective summer program (MITES). Mostly because I don’t want to ask my teachers to write more recommendations (Are there any programs that don’t require recommendations?) If I don’t get in, which is very likely, I’ll just stay home and do nothing all summer.

I’m applying to SIMR, which is not only incredibly competitive, but also really out of my league! If by some stroke of luck I get in, I’ll probably feel like a fish out of water among all the talented and intelligent individuals around me.

My parents want me to center my summer/senior year around as many neuroscience-related activities as I can, since that is what I want to pursue as a major. They don’t understand, though (and I don’t know how to tell them, either), that I don’t want the rest of my high school experience to be all about impressing colleges - I want to take ASL at my local community college, or get a tutoring job, or apply to a couple writing programs. I understand that showing dedication and passion is incredibly important, but so is enjoying the little time I have left before I’m forced to show that dedication and passion at college, anyway. I was so close to crying today as my dad waxed on about how I needed to come up with a bunch of ideas that are neuroscience-related and follow through with them the next year and a half. The other problem is that my parents are so kind and willing to help me, but they are oblivious to the part that I’m feeling so overwhelmed right now and out of focus. Right now, I should be studying for finals, which are this coming week, but instead, all I can think about was that dreadful conversation with my dad.

@dsi411 I’m only applying to MITES as well. If I don’t get in, which is statistically likely, I’ll try to get an internship that has some sort of academic focus. If not an internship, I’ll try to just get some kind of job.

Sigh. I’m gonna be goine from January 26-Feb 2nd. My 1200-1500 Works in Translation Essay rough draft is due by the 28th-- Great. French Test on Wednesday with Oral Thursday; physics test on Thursday. I cry.

@dnguyen11 Ooh, for IB English? What book are you doing it on? We read Candide, A Doll’s House, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold for works in translation in my IB English class and I did my written assignment on the last one. Our rough draft was due back in first semester though, right after Thanksgiving break.

You guys seem pretty motivated and quite productive… I did literally nothing today. I tried to start AP stats…but ended up consuming myself in social media and politics lol…oops.

@photogeek8 I’m wishing you the best. I hope you can iron I things out with your parents in such a way that you can pursue the things you’re looking forwards to doing. You’re in my thoughts.

@pseudoprimal Thank you. That’s really sweet of you.

I was also going to apply to the Bank of America one…until I realized that it’s too much $$$. I’m thinking of trying to get an internship with a local law firm which is hopefully paid. The only thing it will make my application look weaker than others.

Ugh finals are this coming week. Thankfully, I have Monday off and can use it to study. Must. Stay. Focused.

I was completely unproductive today… and i have finals next week. I dont know how im gonna bring myself to study and its so hard to find a balance between school ans self-studying

I have so much to do and I haven’t been very efficient in my work. I haven’t touched Japanese nor Korean in what seems like ages (actually not since I got back to school) but at least I’m keeping my Duolingo streak…

@Faultystart gotta love Duolingo lol

Best of luck in your studying to all of you with finals coming up!

@tigerman333 Wait, I thought the BoA application was free?

I’ve heard of Duolingo and Memrise but I can’t download them due to the iPhone 5c’s awful storage capacity…

I think I’m just going to buy a Kanji book that I’ll study over the summer, since I’ve finally decided to take AP Japanese next year.

@neoking It is but I meant the expense for traveling and all that

@Greninja do you know much Japanese? (Just trying to contextualize your comment  )

All of you guys have been doing productive things while I’m over here having the Hamilton soundtrack on repeat.

I’m trying to get a summer job at Kaiser permanente, it’s paid but requires an interview. I hope I can get it, it sounds great  I think I’m also going to be visiting USC before this school year is over  I’m excited, I’m starting to really like it, despite my family being 100% bruin!
