High School Class of 2017

10 applications submitted, 7 more to go.

UChicago submitted today… love my “Why UChicago” essay

FINALLY finished my Common App essay. So relieved; so done with that essay…

So I ended up getting into my reach/dream school: the University of Michigan! The stress of college applications/admissions is finally over after a year of constant worrying!! Good luck to everyone still going through the process and may you get into your dream school!

I just copied over the list the parents were keeping up. Check out the thread - HS Class of 2017 Acceptances. Post yours - follow instructions I left

Congrats @edegops on getting in to your dream school! I have one left to hear from and I can relax. Well, sort of b/c then I have to concentrate on getting outside scholarships! I envy your sense of relief! Waiting for Feb 1. UMD-CP and then will play eenie, meenie, miny, moe if I get in.

Same, UMich’s College of Engineering! <3 I’m so happy :’) I felt so down after getting rejected by UChicago.

At accepted into U of Arizona for the Sustainable Plant Systems major!!! :):) I think i might accept the offer!!

Accepted to Delaware Honors College Biological Sciences with a $13,000 scholarship! It’s pretty low on my list but still

congrats to everyone who got accepted already!!

quick question: for anyone submitting an art portfolio, do you think it’s okay to submit a drawing of a photograph? like…there’s this picture i found online and i drew it (freehand ofc), but i’m not sure if that’s okay. or rather, a better question would be: what types of drawings would be considered appropriate to put in an art portfolio?

(i’ve never taken an art class, which might be the reason for my confusion in regards to original art hah)

@desideratum you could put that, provided the photo isn’t copyrighted and the owner allows people to draw it. you could mention that you used a photo reference - I definitely used photo references in my art portfolio (although I never used only one reference for a work - usually it was multiple references for multiple elements in a piece).

other types of pieces I included: still lifes (lots of these), poster (that I did for a contest), and semi-realistic pieces in which I used photo references to draw initial sketches but colored/positioned the elements differently from the photographs. I also did some graphic design stuff, so I included those in the portfolios to schools that didn’t just accept traditional art. hope that helps! if you have any other questions, feel free to pm me

@notanotherjanet thank you so much, wow! your advice clarified a ton  the only problem with said picture is that it was posted on twitter, and i saved the picture without bookmarking the tweet. i’m guessing it probably isn’t copyrighted, though…?

@desideratum yup you’re welcome! you could prob try reverse image search, but if it doesn’t come up I wouldn’t sweat too much about it – I don’t think (emphasis on the think haha) colleges would go through your portfolio to check for copyright infringement, unless you were referencing a very famous photo

That not so fun realization that your teacher wants to do her recommendation on paper and mail it. Which is why I’m stuffing envelopes at 2:15 in the morning…
Have a nice rest, lucky people whose teachers do it online!!!

IT’S BREAK GUYS! I have a crap ton of apps to finish…time to hibernate from CC. Happy Holidays everyone!

yup…checking in. i have stanford, duke, penn, dartmouth left. I’m reviewing Stanford essays now.

Random question: if I am a junior but going to college next year, which Class Thread do I belong to?

@KG5APR this one. you’re graduating high school in 2017 and are suffering the same, treacherous college application process as the rest of us

Having trouble writing essays for reaches. I know that nobody wants to be around the Eeyore-like, constantly negative person, but I don’t think I’ll get into Georgetown in a million years, and it’s hard to research the school without feeling hopeless.

@bfc2017 I agree… I almost have the opposite problem, though! It’s hard for me to write a super excited “Why ___?” essay without over-investing myself and falling in love with all of my reaches (aka setting myself up for disappointment).

@eyrar99 yes, exactly!! also I loved my “Why Penn” essay, but I was rejected ED, which has really shot my confidence.
