High School Class of 2017

Anyone here apply to Harvey Mudd? If so, how did you do the IRS verification of non filling letter? I’m not entirely sure what to do and I’m slightly panicking

@SockandBoots I need to do it for UMD, and I’m stuck in the same boat fam. Someone plz help!!!

@SockandBoots @YoohooAddict Are you two talking about the thing on IDOC you have to fill out if you didn’t file taxes? I did that, and it worked out fine for all of my colleges except one… Colby still says they’re awaiting my tax returns, which I don’t have! Ugh!

I emailed them and never heard back…

@SockandBoots @YoohooAddict @eyrar99 Wellesley expects the same thing, and while I’m still awaiting receipt from the IRS, this is how I found the form: You can go onto irs.gov, click “more…” under Forms and Pubs, then click on Form 4506-T. 4506-T is the form that you need to get the non-filer’s statement. The directions should be fairly straight-forward on the IRS document, but you should not ask the IRS to send it directly to the school unless the school says otherwise. I would contact the college if possible, though, they might have different directions. This is just what I did based off of my own experience.

@eyrar99 No, I don’t think that’s what I’m talking about. It could be, but I think what @yuccatree mentioned is what I’m looking for.

@yuccatree Alright, I got the form. So what I’m understanding is that I don’t send it to the school through the IRS; instead, I should print it out and mail or fax it to them. Am I right? And no the school that needs it wants it to be either mailed or faxed.

@YoohooAddict You fax or mail the form to the IRS, then they will send you back the non-filer’s statement through the mail (from my understanding). Then, when you get it, you either mail or fax it to the school. Here is what another school (not UMD) says to do, they might explain it clearer than me: http://www.marquette.edu/mucentral/financialaid/resources_non_filing_letter_instructions_1718.shtml

@yuccatree Oh okay, I get it now. So how long does it take for the IRS to send me my non-filer’s statement through the mail? Cuz like I need to send this nonfiling statement to UMD by April 1.

@YoohooAddict They say that it takes 10 business days to process so you should be fine. I sent mine in last week and haven’t gotten it back, but I sent it in last week Tuesday so it likely hasn’t finished processing.

Ah okay, thanks so much!!! You’re really a great friend! Wish more people were like you in the world @yuccatree

@YoohooAddict Of course, no problem! Glad I could be of help!! I was in the same place last week, not knowing what to do, so I just felt like I had to help.

@yuccatree I’m glad I asked here. Otherwise, it would’ve taken me a while to figure it out lolz.

@YoohooAddict Yeah, the non-tax filer’s statement can be really confusing, especially without specific steps laid out.

How long has it been since I have had a day in which I truthfully claimed, “I have completed everything on my to-do list.” ??

If it’s urgent, you can always make an appointment with your local IRS and they will give it to you there.

Hello everyone and congrats on your respective acceptances.

So I have a question for zeroing in on my final university.

I’ve been admitted to the Honors program at UMD College Park and Rutgers. I’ve also been admitted to a few other universities such as U Florida, U Illinois Urbana Champaign, UT Austin and UMN Twin Cities. (Still waiting on decisions from NYU, Berkeley, UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill etc.)

So assuming that I do not get accepted to any other university (since I’m an international student and these schools are super competitive lol), how much importance should I be giving to the Honors programs that I’ve been offered?

For example, should I attend UIUC since it’s overall a better school and higher ranked or attend UMD because of the opportunities that the Honors program offers?

Any help would be appreciated

P.S: I’m majoring in Economics and in the above (accepted) list, cost of attendance is not an issue.

@SetShah10 I think it really depends on what each honor program has to offer you. What are you getting out of being an honors student? What benefits will you be getting at the school?

After doing some research, it will be up to you to make the decision whether or not you value these benefits more than, say, going to a school that did not offer you placement in an honors program.

Firstly, what school do you think will be able to provide you with the best education (do not rely on rankings to tell you this)? Look into the programs offered at each school, how many professors there are in your field, what they have accomplished, success rate after college, etc).

Secondly, what school can you see yourself being happy at (take into account weather, extracurriculars, culture, distance from home, etc)?

So you have to decide for yourself whether or not you believe the honors program pros have a net value greater than the pros of UIUC. If you still cannot decide, just keep researching and asking people about their experiences at these respective schools.

I do not think a ranking or placement into an honors program should be the determining factor of what college you go to (unless the honors program gives you substantial benefits) because you may very well get more out of going to UMD (but I obviously do not know because this requires research personalized to your own goals).

I’m going to rant:

So I’m currently and projected to stay top valedictorian (they name anyone with a 4.0 or higher valedictorian but the person with the highest GPA is named top valedictorian) and I have to audition to speak at graduation. Like WHAT??? I HAVE TO AUDITION TO SPEAK AT GRADUATION WHEN I’M TOP VALEDICTORIAN??? I feel that is so messed up.

@fantasyreader My school doesn’t even do valedictorian. Anyone who wants to speak has to audition. Besides, shouldn’t the best speakers get to speak, regardless of their current standing in class?

See, for my school, the class votes on a speaker : // which I don’t really like because then it’s a popularity contest??? and tbh I’d rather have auditions to make sure that a good speaker speaks rather than a popular person.

@math3matical Thank you!
