Good luck on everything, everyone! We only have to get through today, and then it’ll be the weekend.
Has anyone started receiving college letters? I have, but they’re all from relatively unknown/small ones. And some of them have already sent me emails, and so are just wasting paper…
There’s only one more week until basketball ends (I think)! I really can’t wait. I’ve gotten so tired of practices and even games.
@cxprus The IB route might be a bit intense, but I think you should try it out! Though, if you feel like it’s not for you, will you be able to change your classes back?
@mutedmornings The IB coordinator says after a year and if you don’t like it, then you can drop the program at the end of junior year. But 2 teachers said I should do it if I’m planning to do 3-4 APs next year but I have to decide by February 19th.
I think I’m gonna talk to the teachers about it and see if it’s really a fit for me.
I mean last semester in Geometry I got a C, which I don’t get and brought my GPA to one point.
I keep hearing that the acceptance rate is higher and then all of a sudden you’re prepared for university and such. But honestly, I usually get A’s and B’s. Everyone in the AP route gets A’s and in the IB route, I wouldn’t know at all so I am not sure.
Thanks guys for the reply earlier btw. I asked someone at my school and since the college didnt report numeric grades to them and just letter grades, they automatically make any A a 95. Sounds kind of dumb tbh. Ill try to get the college to send numeric grades I guess. I mean a student who got a 90 and a student who got a 100 shouldnt both get a 95.
Well, I’m in the middle of a blizzard. It started two hours ago and expected to go to about 30 inches by tomorrow night. A state of emergency has been declared for the state.
@ak2018 I don’t think I’d be much of a help with peer-editing, but I read 1984 last year for school and loved it. What did you think about it?
@cxprus I don’t really know much about IB, but maybe you could lighten the load by taking some SL’s?
My midterm grades are coming in. I actually did a lot better in some than I thought I did. I did get a 79 on my honors bio midterm though, which is just frustrating because I was so close to a B. >:U
@LeopardFire I HATED IT! The message was there, but I honestly hated. There was not that much action and it was pretty hard to read. A lot of my classmates thought the same thing.
@ak2018 I also haven’t read 1984, but I’m happy to look over it and any other things if you still need someone too. I actually love editing. Just edited one of my good friend’s paper today. Definitely don’t post it on the fourms because of your teacher runs an online plagiarizing check it will pop up.
@cxprus I’m actually going to take the IB program next year too and know quite a bit about it. Did you come up with that schedule with yor guidance counsellor? I’m only asking because you actually have to take courses at the IB level in math, science, social studies, English, foreign language, and an elective or an additional core class. You have to take 3-4 at the HL and the other at SL. I don’t know if your school maybe meets some of those requirements senior year.
A C is a below average grade for an pre-IB, but you still did fine in other classes. It might have just been a bad semester. How have you done in math in previous years? You can always take math studies which is the lowest level of IB math. I have a friend who are not as strong in math who will be doing that. I really have no clue how hard that class actually is though. Are you able to change your schedule after you officially sign up? If so, you could sign up for one thing, work very hard to do better, see how your grades look at the end of the year, and adjust as you see fit.
You should schedule a one on one meeting with one with your GC to talk about this. You can also talk to any teacher that teaches an IB class. You are probably taking at least 1 class from a teacher that also teaches IB. I know I’ve gotton some of the best advice from teachers, not GCs. If you have any more questions I could answer, feel free to PM me.
@Madeline25 do you know if it looks bad to take an IB class without doing the full diploma? IB is offered at my school along with PLTW and you can’t do PLTW and get the full diploma. I plan on taking 2 (Chem HL and Spanish SL)
Hey @ak2018 we were supposed get that storm up here in Maine, but I believe it is just going to go out to the coast and we won’t be getting anything. But stay safe, I hear it is supposed to be really bad for the south. I agree with you about 1984, I just couldn’t really stand that book. It was kind of okay, but then again, I can’t say one good thing about it. I would recommend Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury if you haven’t read it yet.
Today was the last day of midterms for my school. I believe I did fairly well on all my exams, but reports should be coming out sometime next week and we will know for sure. How do ya’ll do on your midterms this year?
@tonyk16 I actually already read Fahrenheit 451. I read it before 1984 and it was the first book I read this year. I loved it compared to 1984. It’s just one of those books you have to read again in ten years when the book’s message should be more relatable.
@Madeline25 At the informational meeting this week, they gave students a folder with information stating AP vs. IB, Course Sheet and obviously, the information about the program.
This is the 11th Grade Course Offerings:
*IB English HL1
*IB History HL1 (Government/Econ inside)
*AP Chemistry (we could do the AP exam if we want to for Chem , but we are doing the IB Chemistry SL senior year, since the HL class is way too crazy for the students according to the IB coordinator)
AP Physics
*IB Spanish HL1
IB Mandarin SL (technically HL)
*AP Psychology
IB Visual Arts HL 1
*Algebra 2/PreCalculus/AP Stats
*Theory of Knowledge (4 semesters in order to comply with Extended Essay)
Non-IB Class
Classes I need to take if I go the IB route.
As for if I do the program and regret it, I could drop it at the END of the first year. High school math, I usually finish the class with a B.
@nyuhopeful44 I would bet it would look maybe slightly better than an AP in that field if it’s an HL, (definitely as good) but not as good as the full DP. However, I can’t say for sure.
Our school actually just implemented the fairly new IB CP program for the reasons you describe (At least I think. I know nothing about PLTW so I could be completely off base. In that case, I’m sorry and just ignore me!). It’s geard towards people who want to take classes in more career oriented areas. You still take a full IB program, but it is slightly altered from the DP so you can fit in whatever you chose to be your career path. You are elligable to receive a IB CP Diploma I believe. You might want to see if something like that is offered at your school.
I read Fahrenheit 451 and I thought it was eh. Like someone said earlier, the message was there I just didnt like it lol. I havent read 1984 yet but hopefully I will soon.
Do you think it would be excessively weird if I add my 7th grade math teacher on Facebook, and then message her asking a few questions? And if so, should/could I still do it?
Context: I’ve realized that I may have learned a few new concepts since 7th grade, but my math skills have never actually really gotten better (or at least it seems that way to me). I’d like to ask her for some advice. I already know that I should just spend more time on math, but I’d still like to know if she’d have anything to say???
