@nyuhopeful44 What a terrible thing to say! “honestly, I don’t think you need to be working this hard. You’re black and from a poor school district, so your grades will make you stand out more than others.” I know you weren’t trying to offend anyone, but that was REALLY insensitive.
@joyce1517 SAMEEEE
@Hamlon again, I’m just stating facts. Affirmative action + vt has a high acceptance rate means that @ak2018 can slow down if he’s making himself sick by working too hard. That’s all I’m trying to say
Lol that’s funny my school isn’t on the top schools list… We have a really good AP program and a pretty good dual enrollment program, but only about 400 out of 2800 students are in it, so it’s a pretty low rated school (a B school in our county, which is not horrible). However, our school has amazing extracurricular programs, with a state champions basketball team, state champion and I believe #8 national cheerleading, top rated band and chorus, among other great programs. Even though we’re not a “Rated” school, I think we’re pretty good. It’s just about the amount of effort you want to put in.
My school is 44th but I think a lot of the rankings depend on if the school requires all students to take the SATs. Mine does but if this were no longer a requirement, students not planning to attend college wouldn’t take it and then the rating would go up.
@cxprus Oh yeah, sorry! Got a little carried away with Beyoncé. :)) I would say go with AP. It doesn’t matter if the future valedictorian, or your homeroom pals, is/are doing IB. The only time the valedictorian will be mentioned is at graduation and your high school reunion. Since you’re planning to major in Political Science/Psychology, you’ll need the flexibility. A lot of colleges either consider the rigor of AP and IB to be the same or AP over IB due to the way AP is structured. Because of this, AP is usually the better choice as most colleges don’t really care if you did AP or IB. With IB, you’ll have more work and may start to struggle to due all of the homework and will likely not be able to handle ECs. Some of my friends, who go to an IB high school, have told me the IB program can be a real life drainer, and the IBDP program feels like you’re already in college. A lot of essay writing is involved, A LOT! Not only that but Community Service Hours. My IB friends are currently juniors in the program and they said they are barely surviving. They’re given worksheet after worksheet, and, at their school, are given a lot of busywork. IB is really not for everyone, and it’s definitely not for me. I was in the IBMYP during middle school and it seemed really easy, but, apparently, everything got turned up a notch in high school. I’m not trying to scare you away from IB, I’m just saying that IB is really for a select few. As one of my junior IB friends says “IB will become a big part your life. You’ll love and hate it. You’ll laugh and cry to your mommy about. You’ll wish you never did it and doing it may or may not make you question the rest of your life choices. BUT, if you’re able to put in the effort, stay up till 2am to finish an essay or project, and having your girlfriend be a side chick because the only thing you’ll be kissing goodbye for the next 2 - 4 years is your childhood, then do IB. IB will/can make a man out of anyone.” Yes he said all that. He’s in our school JROTC program so he plans to be in the military. I would say, again, do AP. I’d you can add one or two more AP classes to your route, do so.
@bubblylaugh I’m planning to be a mechanical engineer.
I disagree with @nyuhopeful44 I think it’s stupid to tell someone not to work hard because they’re black and from a bad school district it is ideal to always be trying your hardest even with a 4.0 GPA. I think you’re ignorant in that you think Virginia Tech is not that hard to get into, maybe it does have a high acceptance rate but it’s engineering program is extremely competitive. It is a similar situation to Cal Poly SLO(San Luis Obispo) in my area SLO isnt even nationally ranked, UCLA is freakin UCLA however my friend who applied to both for mechanical engineering got into UCLA but got rejected by SLO. Thats how competitive some schools are only for engineering, if my friend applied as a business major he sure would have gotten in. That may mean that VT engineering is more competitive than even NYU however @ak2018 being black does reduce the difficulty slightly VT engineering will still be a difficult path.
I was at huggeee college fair today in the city but I was kind of disappointed to see that the “big names” (aka Ivies, mini ivies, etc.) weren’t there. My guess is that they didn’t go because obviously everyone already wants to apply to them but it still would have been nice to get to ask some questions. However, I did find some really cute colleges I might apply to!
Is anyone joining the S.N.H.C. tonight?
I was wondering why SNHC wasn’t starting up!
@ak2018 You bet I am. Three days worth of homework for AP Econ, an essay, an APUSH FRQ, an extra credit assignment, and studying for AP exams. Probably not gonna sleep tonight.
I’m so terrified for APUSH
@bubblylaugh Same. It’s giving me so much anxiety. I feel like I’ll get prompts that I know nothing about for the DBQ and long essay. We’re in this together.
@nyuhopeful44 I’m tired, so I’ll pretend this conversation and your rude comment never happened.
@BucketsUCSC I completely agree with you for once.
@ak2018 I’ve been practicing for the AP Comp Sci exam all weekend. I for sure will get a high 4, but I’ve been trying to bump myself up to a low/mid 5. Hopefully a week will do it! The MCs are hard and some are really time consuming. I finally understand the FRQs though and how to get the information I need out of the questions that decided they are TOO special to only be a paragraph. I’m currently studying for AP World and plan to study for a pre-Calc test I have tomorrow later tonight.
@neptuna I have a two page essay on The Tragedy of Julius Caesar due Wednesday, but I’ll start now. I also have to complete the first page of my Spanish packet and complete my sample test for Algebra II.
@bubblylaugh @neptuna same. Idrk what I’m gonna do to study since I haven’t even started. Do I need to memorize the rubrics for the DBQs and LEQs?
@gormar099 @bubblylaugh @neptuna This is why I wouldn’t be able to handle an AP Social Studies class. History is my worst subject, or at least World History is. I know so much more about U.S. History!
What’s S.N.H.C.?
And AP European History is a pain in the butt. So much history. Ahhhhhhhh.
@solarflare9000 sunday night homework club. basically everyone who procrastinated the entire weekend (ie: me) does their homework on sunday night.
@ak2018 I don’t think history is my worst subject, it’s just my laziest. I find it soooo tedious sometimes. I’ve been thinking about dropping AP Euro next year for AP Stats, since that’s more in line with my interests. But at my school it’s mainly a senior class so I don’t know if I want to be the only junior in a senior class.
