High School Class of 2018

@apple1893 you’re high school must follow the international rules because in other countries they don’t use miles, they use meters. So in the Olympics they run the 1500 m and 3000m.

@apple1893 We run the 1600 meter.

I’m taking 3 APs next year : AP Chem, AP Lang, AP CompSci

I’m think about adding AP Hug because I need to take it junior or senior year for a program graduation requirement, so I’m unsure whether to add it or not.

@DaEmmJay23 I would add it senior year. Five APs + SATs would be a lot

Haha so the bio exam is in two weeks and my class hasn’t even finished the material. We have a test tomorrow and our final is on next tuesday. I took a practice exam and missed a 5 by one point (you needed a 60-100 and I got a 59) so I’m hoping thats a good sign but I’m ngl I haven’t opened my prep book ONCE. Like other than to take that practice test I’ve had no time at all to study and I’m lowkey freaking out

I apparently do not want to survive high school lol. I am taking 7 APs next year.

@mamaba My APAH test is Tuesday and we finished the material Friday. So I know the feeling.

@mamaba I missed my AP practice test for the 5 by one point too (but for APUSH)! APUSH test is one week away, but my other classes keep cutting out APUSH… :-??

Do you guys think 2 APs (Eng Lang and Macro; Macro being only second semester first being general Econ) is not challenging enough? I know I can do more, but the AP Physics 1 class that I wanted to take is conflicting with Computer Programming, which I genuinely want to learn about, including physics. AP Bio will allow for 3 APs and Computer Programming, but I would prefer to learn about physics, but I’ll be fine with AP Bio, except that my schedule will be too (academically) similar to peers also vying for top colleges.

Got rejected from one of my top summer programs. First time I actually teared up while reading…

On the bright side, 100% on math quiz… #:-S

@mamaba Don’t worry about the test! You practically scored a 5 seeing as it was your first crack at the exam without even being taught all the material. My AP World teacher said the practice tests are always harder for students than the actual exam. When I took my practice test for APCS, my teacher had only just started going into interfaces and abstract classes. That topic was an entire free response question! Teachers want you to do bad on the practice tests, so you’ll be scared into studying.
@KG5APR That doesn’t sound like a good idea. Which ones are you taking this year/next year and why not leave some for Senior year? Unless you’re doing it to save money in College (and even then), it’s not worth the time, effort, and sleep deprivation. 3-5 AP classes Junior year is more than enough for the most selective schools. In many cases, 3-5 APs from Freshman to Senior year is seen as very rigorous.
@BucketsUCSC I wouldn’t take AP Human. It’s not a terrible class, but you would get more out of taking Psych and Stats next year. Out of the UCs I’ve seen that give credit for both tests, Psych gives the same amount as Human. In general, schools don’t give out useful/any credit for AP Human.
@bubblylaugh Always go for the most classes you find interesting and not the most APs. That scheduling conflict sucks, but I’d honestly just go with the two APs or learn programming on your own. There are a lot of resources out there to learn a programming language by yourself. You wouldn’t have to take the class in person.
@apple1893 I know the feeling. I got wait listed from Girls Who Code (still really bummed out) and I’m scared I am about to be rejected from the summer program I wanted to go to the most (TASS) and this other program I applied to as a backup (CODE@TACC). Also, what’s with Summer programs and the intimidating acronyms? Lol. I find out the results for the former next Monday/Tuesday and the results for the latter on Monday.

@hamlon I also felt really sad when I saw I got waitlisted for Girls Who Code. Good luck for your summer program results.
@apple1893 Congrats on that perfect score!

@Hamlon thanks for the supportive reinforcement! I really like the teacher teaching Computer Programming and he advises two clubs I’m in, and I would prefer the class a tad bit

@Kelvin82 Thanks!
@bubblylaugh Take his class then! I didn’t know you already knew the teacher well. Doesn’t matter the subject, if you love the teacher, you’re gonna LOVE the class. For sure, go ahead and take computer programming. If you want, maybe you could look into taking one of your required classes during the Summer and/or online to make space in your schedule for something that doesn’t conflict.

@Hamlon I agree however I think I’m going to take stats my senior year, and I’ll take APHG and AP Psych online I know it doesn’t give much credit however it is an AP class and an easy AP Psych is notoriously hard at our school so I will take that online and stats senior year

@Hamlon I am also taking 7 senior year. The ones I am taking junior year are AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP English Language and Composition, AP U.S. History, AP European History, and AP Spanish. This year I took AP Art History, AP Calculus AB, AP World History, and AP Computer Science. At my school, if you want a good ranking, you have to take a lot of APs because the school separates GPA by grade point and not by A,A-,B,etc. I am within the top ten students of my grade of 350+ because of my course load.

@Hamlon, it’s a disappointment that I’m only dropping AP Physics 1 because of the conflict, required classes aren’t affected

That teacher is the best math teacher at this school, and everyone knows it. I’m so sad I don’t have him for math this year (never had him, would’ve loved to have him as a teacher). He went to elite schools for his degrees (Dr. not Mr.) and his passion and skill in the profession…just amazing. Part of the reason I want to take computer programming is so I can have him haha

@apple1893 Congrats on the new time. Unfortunately, it looks like my season is over as I didn’t qualify for districts.

@Hamlon I’d love to take APCS if I had the time.

@KG5APR My school separates GPA by grade point too. I’ve never seen anything like taking 7 APs at my school and I have a class size of over 650 now! It used to be over 700 freshman year. I’m only taking 2 AP classes this year, 4 the next, 4 Senior year (w/ 2 self-studies for classes I will take in Summer dual credit), and my rank hasn’t been affected. Once you’re in the top 5-10%, rank doesn’t really matter. Don’t use AP classes as a buffer for GPA, use them for enrichment. Why not make higher grades in fewer AP classes and invest your time into other things? Are you sure this is normal at your school?
@bubblylaugh That’s completely fine then. Does your school offer an online option or Summer school for Physics? Some schools highly recommend a year each for Bio, Chem, and Physics. Is there a possibility you won’t be able to take any Physics class Senior year? Dual credit during the Summer/school year at a CC is another option.
@ak2018 Edhesive, Udacity, and edX have some amazing (and free) programming courses. I plan on learning basic html and css over the Summer while I improve my Java skills too. If you find a way to fit APCS in Senior year, take it!
