High School Class of 2018

You guys, I went up to 3/491 in my class!!

@Everyonewhoresponded Thanks! It seems like GPA is way different at different schools. So how do colleges compare them? I know rank is important, but don’t people naturally see a higher number in GPA and cling to it? I just feel my school is at a disadvantage because of the harsher system and that maybe why no one from my school has gotten into HYP. The reason I say this is because if two people had the same qualifications in rank, scores, and EC’s, but one had a higher GPA, the higher GPA would be rewarded. For example, 4.5 v. 4.8 with the same grades, 4.8 looks way better, but it’s not.
@snowfairy137 Congrats!
@Hamlon Have fun at TASS!

Congrats! @snowfairy137 Meanwhile I’m over here in the lower ranks. That GPA I got last year really messed me up.

@KG5APR Some schools, like Virginia Tech, because of how differently schools calculate GPA, don’t put a high value on GPA, but rather on letter grades. Meaning they want to see that you challenged yourself by taking the most rigorous classes you can take and getting As and Bs in them.

But back to your post, usually, they compare people who went to the same school. If a lot of people from your school are applying to X School then they compare you to others at your school to see just how hard, or easy, your school was.

@KG5APR Also, many colleges have their own GPA calculator so all students are on the same scale.

Hey, do you guys know about ways to annotate faster? I’ve been taking notes on my book for a couple minutes now and I’m only gone through two pages.

I wish I knew how high/low compared to the others in my class

@ak2018 @sewin2music Thanks :slight_smile:

I just e-mailed one of the AP English 11 teachers and this is what I said:

I was starting to read over the summer assignment and noticed how long it was taking me, 15 minutes, to annotate just two pages. I do know that annotating is something that takes a very long time to do, as I experienced annotating and reading all of Frankenstein, but it seems annotating is still slightly tedious. I know it is something that helps you to better understand the book and to provide evidence when writing an essay, for me, at least, it seems to be such a chore. I know annotating is a big part of AP English 11, but I was wondering if there were ways to annotate more efficiently. After my method of just summarizing every paragraph wasn’t really working for me, I thought of another method after re-reading over the AP English 11 Summer Assignment paper. The new method thought of was to read one page and then afterwards, re-read the page to look for figurative language, pathos vs. logos, and syntax and write those down. Doe this seem like a good method? I know AP English 11 will require a large time commitment, but up to the task. It’s mainly that while was annotating Frankenstein, I wasn’t really enjoying the book while annotating. I liked reading the book more and making annotations kind of took the joy of out reading the book. I had, however, better understood the book, but did not enjoy the experience of annotating.

I’m currently reading “Into the Wild” and taking notes on paper on it. I am definitely liking the book so far.

This is what she said:
Glad you are liking the book.
There are many different ways to annotate. And we definitely want you to enjoy the book too.
The method you suggested is fine. You could even read a chapter and go back to look over it to maybe summarize, and take notes on diction, imagery, theme, etc.
Hope this helps.

She seems really helpful.

DON’T HUG ME I’M SCARED EPISODE 6 COMES OUT TOMORROW!

@ak2018 I wouldn’t recommend annotating every paragraph, as that will be super tedious and time-consuming. I would say to read and annotate it in chunks- perhaps every 5-10ish pages- or in chapters, which will help you break down the information better and help you absorb the story and its’ key points. Just a method that works for me.

My school is simple just like @sewin2music

So I got a text yesterday from one of my friends. She was inviting me to her pool party tomorrow. I said I couldn’t go because I was going to start my AP Chemistry Summer Assignment. I won’t be see her next year because she’s going to the new high school. My parents would’ve let me go, but I’m honestly wondering if I should’ve gone. I’m literally the biggest nerd EVER! :-B :((

@sona7662 Thanks!

@ak2018 Text her and ask her if you can still go. You are not going to miss a lot of studying, but you will miss a giant opportunity to keep a friend.

@KG5APR You’re right. Chemistry can wait. I’ve got a life to live! :))

@ak2018 yea, go out and have fun! its summer :). My goal for this summer is actually to get out of the house and do something like climbing, hanging out with a friend, or work every day, so that I don’t spend all summer holed up in my room studying and wasting my life on the internet.

Also, I took my first Khan Academy SAT practice test and I got a 780 M and 700 CR/W, which was really weird because I got a 710 M and 750 CR/W on my PSAT last year, so my scores kinda switched around. I will admit, I didn’t go back and check my answers which I had plenty of time to do, and I made some dumb mistakes, but hopefully going forward, I can get that higher score on both my Math and Critical Reading, instead of one at a time lol.

@snowfairy137 So I was literally doing my SAT Practice on Khan Academy for Math and when I was doing those timed-calculator sections, I got 4/8 questions right and I didn’t answer 2 of them. I would say that’s somewhat okay. I’m literally relearning how to do unit conversions and I can say that without a doubt Stoichiometry come back to haunt me.

@ak2018 Yea I feel. The triangle stuff and stuff about graphs haunts me, I can usually work my way through, but it takes me way longer than it should. The curve on the practice test one was so hard for math though, I literally missed one question and got dropped down 20 points.

@snowfairy137 Same! My Geometry knowledge is so fuzzy! It’s a really good thing we’ll actually be starting Trigonometry 2nd quarter instead of 3rd quarter. Trigonometry wasn’t my best math unit in Geometry.
