High School Class of 2018

Today was my first day of school! Since its a Wednesday, we were let out at 12:48. I’ll do a recap of each class because why not:

We started with advisory. That’s basically homeroom. We didn’t do much, since we’re juniors. We already know all the in-and-outs of the school.

Next was Pre-Calculus. I’m going to have to borrow a graphing calculator from school. Its nice that I don’t have to pay for one, but I’d rather not use one at all! The teacher said she was preparing us to take AP Calc AB next year, but I already know that’s not happening in my case.

Financial Literacy was easy-going. We just watched part of a TED Talk.

Honors Latin III/IV was fun. There is a lot of seniors who know the teacher, who is super nice. We took a walk outside while he asked us about our summer.

Intro to Marketing was okay. Apparently, we are going to start a business during the semester.

AP Lang was difficult to find, but luckily we didn’t do much today. We just watched a TED Talk, which we need to write a reflection on for tomorrow.

My APUSH teacher is really passionate. He started shouting several times while he talked. He also hyped up the intense difficulty of the class, which fills me with dread.

Then I had lunch, which I only have on Wednesdays. Other days will be either Gym or Chemistry.

My last period is more Chemistry. The teacher was nice, but I was losing my patience at that point. I just wanted to go home!

For some reason, I’m really anxious about this year. I usually love the first day of school, but I just feel super stressed.

My school doesn’t give us our schedules till we walk in the first day :(( so annoying!!!

@LeopardFire my APUSH teacher last year was the exact same way! He said loud teaching is good teaching

Just took my first practice test for the SAT (not official) and got a 1370! I’d that good??? I’m not really familiar with the new scale…

@sewin2music Depends on where you are looking to go to college. It is well above the national average!!! Have you taken the ACT before?

@kassh4 I had taken a practice ACT and got around 30-31. I would like to go to Johns Hopkins,UCLA, UCI, UCSD, ?? not really sure yet…

So, after sending several e-mails to the head of OHSx, he gave me $500 worth of aid, so now I can participate in the class! I’m really excited to do this, but the syllabus looks really tough.

@sewin2music Are you in-state for the UCs? If not, it will be very tough to get in, and will need very competitive test scores, and very expensive too. Even in-state, they are not easy to get into, but much easier than OOS.

do you guys know if points are deducted for incorrect answers on the ap calc ab exam? my teacher told us we get marked 1/4 of a point wrong but ap world didn’t do that i think so I’m a little confused…

The soccer pre-season has been so much fun! I see so much improvement in myself and I can not wait for the actual season to begin!

For those who have been studying for the PSAT, are you going to take the SAT right after or wait a little longer?

@sewin2music Your ACT score is a little bit higher than your SAT score. For those schools you might want to aim for higher scores. Practice makes perfect

Tfw you are just winging the PSAT and hoping for the best

@Hamlon tfw you’re taking the SAT first

@Hamlon I might wait I a few months after, but enough time after so I can also take subject tests.

@soccer125 you are misguided the UC’s are easier to get into OOS they have an influx of in state applicants and are admitting more and more OOS students every year to gain more revenue(OOS tuition is over three times the amount of in state tuition) so every year it is getting easier to be admitted OOS and harder to be admitted in state regardless the schools are very competitive either way

http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_fr/Frosh_Prof13.htm
UCLA had a 34 % admission rate for OOS vs an 18 percent admission rate for in state

@Soccer1235 I am in state for the UC schools. The the only thing with the ACT is that I can’t get past the fast timing! I think I have a better chance of improving with the SAT because of all the new practice available and the timing. Also, I got really good results for the essay!! ( 8 8 7=> not sure how to report that)

@Hamlon I am taking the official October PSAT and the November SAT.

@LeopardFire Do your teachers work for TED or something? We watched a TED talk in U.S. History, which was really well done. Also, are you going into AP Calculus AB?

@LeopardFire @nyuhopeful44 It’s actually kind of funny. All of the U.S. and Virginia History teachers yell at their students, except mine. They all do it because they are very passionate about U.S. History. My teacher is definitely very passionate about U.S. History, but he doesn’t really like yelling as he feels his regular voice is just fine. The other U.S. History teachers are known for their passionate yelling and teaching.

Even our school’s only AP Econ teachers yells at his students, but that’s only to make sue they don’t fall asleep.

Speaking of U.S. History, I cannot say enough how much I’m loving my teacher. I had class with him at the end of the day and he is honestly probably going to be one of my favorite teachers this year. He doesn’t really believe in homework and believes that you can get a lot done in 90 minutes! We have a guided note packet, which means the notes are fill-in-the-blank, that go along with the PowerPoint. He likes to play a lot of YouTube videos. A good 25% of today’s class time was used to watch different scenes from Pocahontas He also does this really cool thing where he’ll try and relate history to our own lives. Today in class, we were learning about the Age of Exploration as well as the English colonies and he asked us if there was a time in our lives where we failed and if we tried again to tie in with the lesson about how even though the English had two failed colonies, they didn’t give up and eventually settled Jamestown, a town a couple hundred miles away from me. He just seems really cool and nice! He also doesn’t come off really conservative, seems slight liberal, which is definitely okay.

I’m also loving my AP English Language class and teacher. They are both definitely very interesting. I definitely likes the way she teaches. She basically gives us writing prompts and we have to write 4-5 sentences about the topic in 5 minutes. On Friday, we’ll be turning in our short little paragraphs for her to critique.
