High School Class of 2018

I got the math I think: the part I was worried about was Reading, but yeah it ended up being so much easier than I expected.

Grade Update (have been kind of inactive haha)

Spanish- 92%
AP Biology-88%
AP English Language- 83%
Pre Calculus- 89%
Physical Education (Gym Class)- 95%
Philosophy- 92%
AP Chemistry-80%
Statistics-95%
Band-92%

GPA: 89%

Some of these will rise in a few days, some will remain the same, and I think Statistics will drop a little. My GPA will increase though, so I’m not worried.

Anyone applying to Yale Young Global Scholars?

@LeopardFire As the Mayor’s Wife, I get to shriek and faint when Conrad (played by my close guy friend) starts playing the guitar in “Honestly Sincere,” which will be fun! And I’m part of a really cool barbershop quartet, which means that I will have the top line of the whole thing (being as I’m the one girl in a quartet of what is supposed to be all guys) and I will have a lot of cool overlaying harmonies!

@ak2018 I got something like that for a national honor society type thing, if I’m remembering correctly (a year ago was a year ago haha) that said it was at Harvard or something. I looked up the address and it’s literally just an office space used for many things that is located near Harvard (or whatever college it was). However, there were some legitimate looking parts to it, but obviously I didn’t do it. Never figured out whether it was a scam or not.

@averagebean I’m thinking about it.

The math no calc was harder than expected for me

what programs is everyone applying to? just wondering

I am thinking about the questbridge college prep program.

Wow there’s a whole bunch of new people. This school years going good for me so far. Went on my first visit to Penn State honors college and it was a really great experience, I saw a focus on undergrad research and that was a big plus. Also got to have a meeting with a Stat professor which was great as well.

Grades:
AP Lang 89.5
History H 98
AP Econ 98
AP Calc AB 96 (about to go down)
Chem H 96.5
French 94

MITES, Jackson Summer Student Program (wild shot in the dark), and TASP (also wild shot in the dark lol) open applications soon.

@HritikKumar I’ve been thinking about WISTEM at Harvey Mudd, TASP (I’m a TASS alumni, but not sure how much that helps), MIT Diversity programs, MIT women’s program, Summer Science Program (I smell rejection :)) ), Questbridge College prep, Du Bois Scholars accelerated learning academy, Girls on Ice, LEDA, AIM/LITE at Kettering University, NIH internship, Roswell Park, Jackson Lab, and Nano Explorers. Study abroad through a scholarship is my back-up plan. I’m also on the fence about NSLI-Y bc of parental approval. :-/

I know it’s a lot, but there are just so many free programs out there. Texas summers are so long, hot, and miserable! Also like the freedom that goes along with most of these programs.

I should be writing three essays, but instead I spent the entire morning watching Daria. I was too young to remember it, but finally caved into all the “90’s kid” hype. I love it!

@HritikKumar VASTS (Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars) program and GMU’s Aspiring Young Scientists Program.

Well, I just found that both my parents are working this Saturday so there is no way I’m going to homecoming. I might still be able to go to my Robotics Competition, but I’d only be able to go for about 4 hours, which is fine by me. I’ll probably just study and binge watch something.

I would totally apply to summer programs except my parents don’t want me to go off somewhere even if it’s in the same state. i’m looking to see if local community colleges have any programs for high schoolers but my searches have come up bare so far…hopefully i’ll be able to find something fun to do

Anyone know how how the Junior member and junior member titles work. How many posts do you need before you get promoted and stuff and is there any benefit to being a senior member.

I’m just going to work through the summer and put some money away for college

@kassh4 I believe it works like this:

1 - 30 posts - New Member
30 - 299 posts - Junior Member
300 - 1,000 posts - Member
1,000+ posts - Senior Member

I’m pretty sure there’s not really anything that comes out of being anything lower than a Moderator or a Super Moderator. To become a moderator, you have to be selected.

As a senior member myself, there’s really not any benefit. You just get a little notification that says “Congrats! You reached your 1,000th post!” or whatever.

For anyone who has already taken the PSAT, do you guys have any tips? I just went through some of the non-calculator math questions and they looked fairly doable to me.

@ak2018 If you’re a fast reader, try reading through the passages before answering questions. Use the questions (“what provides support for the answer of the previous question” or something like that) to ind the answer if you don’t know it. If the math section asks for percentages, take the first one out of 100. Be prepared for the memes.
