I really want to quit baseball, but I don’t know what I would do to help fill the hole it leaves on my application. A job maybe? Any suggestions in general?
@HazedAndConfused I think you should get a job only if you can handle it and need money. Jobs are a huge strain on schoolwork, time, and social life, but also valuable for experience, $$$, and good on an app. Is there an clubs or ecs that seem interesting to you? You can try to join one, if it’s not too late. Or take up a new hobby, learn a new language lol. (that’s what I would do!)
Its almost the end of the semester and I just realized how busy I am going to be next semester, with competitions and conferences for 3+ clubs, testing and interviews for summer programs. I’m seriously considering quitting track, anyone have any advice?
And tht feeling when u find out the girl you like already has a girlfriend :’( :’( :’( being just friends won’t be that bad… (actually it would be amazing. Still sad tho loll)
@neonerudite thanks for the suggestions. obviously we’re all juniors in high school here and not adcoms, but do you t (or anyone! open question here) think that it would negatively impact my application if I replaced baseball with another EC?
@HazedAndConfused If you no longer like baseball, then don’t continue to play just to impress colleges. Do something that you are interested in.
@HazedAndConfused admissions officers only care about what you are passionate about, and that shows in your essays, descriptions and time spent on the activity. If you don’t enjoy baseball, it will show and will only hurt u imo. Not even just in apps, but it will literally suck the life out of you (I know this from experience LOL). Replace it with smth u love and u should be good!
@snowfairy137 Unfortunately, my school doesn’t do that. We also don’t have SATs at our school. I have to go to a neighboring school to take it.
I got a 1540 on the November SAT and I also used Khan Academy. Although I took several practice tests throughout the end of summer and school year every now and then, it really helped me using Khan Academy. I procrastinated a lot so I started actually studying 2 weeks before the test like maybe every other day or something. I plan on retaking the test in March maybe.
@HazedAndConfused Lol I’m in a similar predicament. I like running and I’m decent at track and field, but I don’t want to join track and field. I know I will end up joining because running is fun sometimes for me and I like hanging out with everybody at races, but I hate actually racing (waiting before my race, warming up, etc. because I get SOOO anxious and I absolutely hate the feeling) and how I can’t just skip practice if I feel like it. I’m also worried though if I do stop, it will look bad that I can’t keep a consistent hobby? Because I quit band after during it from 4th to 9th grade (I never liked it) and I took art in 10th grade instead. I don’t know lol
@joyce1517 Ive heard people on CC say that quitting a sport is ok if you aren’t interested in being a recruited athlete, obviously.
@kassh4 Oh ok thanks! The thing is I have conflicted feelings so I just feel very torn. I love the team (a lot of the friends I’ve made in high school were through track and that’s mainly where I see them) and I enjoy running sometimes. I just hate the races and the horrible tans I get lol
So a few things:
- So my AP Lang teacher is, unfortunately, assigning a book to read and should be finished by December 16th. The book is Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain. It's meant to be a satirical look on slavery as well as a murder mystery. Hopefully, I'll enjoy it.
- My online college course (Physical Geology) starts today. I'm planning on starting it tomorrow night, since I have quite the work to do tonight.
- I'm finally taking my permit test today after more than a year of procrastination!
- I'm happy to announce that I'm officially adding MIT to my college list! <:-P I was talking with my parents about allowing me to consider out of state schools and they said yes, on two conditions.
- It had to be a school on the east coast.
- I have to apply to and earn a large amount of scholarship.
I just starting researching MIT and I’m really liking what the school has to offer. But I do know the likely reality that I will probably not get in. But, at this point, I might as well try. I’m probably going to apply early action and pretty much rely on holistic review to hopefully get in.
My school district is providing a free ACT for all students in February, and my school institutes a specific day of ACT testing (9th and 10th graders take ASPIRE).
@ak2018 I basically just had the same college presentation through my AP Lang class, but I’m in period 3 lol.
@ak2018 Boston is such a great area and MIT has a really nice campus. The architecture is amazing and the culture is great.
I read Pudd’nhead Wilson in 7th grade. I didn’t like it. It’s written entirely in the Southern dialect from that time, which makes it hard to understand.
@neonerudite awww, that sucks
My state is requiring us to take the SAT in March. It’s not like I just spent $20 on an ACT prep book or anything.
How has everybody else been preparing for the SAT? I guess I should be starting now.
@neptuna seems like most people here are using Khan Academy, but my peeps at school use programs outside of school
I’ve got Barron’s but I haven’t touched it yet. I probably should get around to that soon though. I’m honestly just worried about the Math section. I consistently get perfect to near-perfect scores on Reading/Writing but the Math section is just devilishly difficult for me (which doesn’t surprise me, as this has been the general trend for my entire high school career).
My school hasn’t held officially held mandatory college-related meetings with counselors and juniors yet, but I talk with my guidance counselor so often about college that I’m more or less set in regards to it. Gotta refine my list though––lowkey don’t want to apply to ten schools come senior year.
@Wolfgangbread I talk with my guidance counselor a lot as well. I think I’ve already had 5 meetings so far this year.
I did really bad on my chem test today :(. Its gonna be dropped, but that means another test that I only did a couple points better on gets counted, dropping my grade down to a 90.7%, which is a 3.7 in my GPA… goodbye 4.0.
My physics test went wayy better but I don’t have a problem in that class… my grade’s like a 99% lol.
