High School Class of 2018

@ssn365 Thanks!

So I’m actually expecting today to be a pretty good day! I’m going to be doing the announcements tomorrow, so I’ve been practicing the Pledge of Allegiance. We’re also going to be SeaPerch (Underwater Robotics) in my Engineering Explorations class and VEX Robotics in POE.

@sciencenerd123 I hear a lot about southern Maine schools and students at my school. Those schools are our main competition in sports, science bowl, etc. One of my classmates last year was deferred from Harvard (he was national debate champ, etc), but he got in and he is a student there now. Let her know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and wish her luck for me!
I’ll probably be deferred from Caltech (my dream school). <:-P We can prepare ourselves together! WOO HOO!

I’ll probably get rejected from all my reach schools b/c no hooks

@frazzledazzle Same!

@snowfairy137 How’s the online class going for you? I’m doing a little bit of it today and I’m doing pretty well. My teacher is so encouraging. She sends out three messages a week just to keep going and to do our best! I literally sent her a message and her reply was “YEAH!!!” :)) She also told us she wants to get as many of us into the summer academy as possible!

Should we expect our UW GPAs to go down because we’re taking harder weighted classes?

@ak2018 Its going good! I had a chat session with my group yesterday and I don’t really like my instructor but its ok I don’t have to interact with her that much. I’m working on a project right now that’s designing a 21’st century spaceship and its awesome!!

@cliffnotes
Hooks do not always/necessarily get you into a college. You’d probably get rejected from all your reach schools if you don’t stand out from the crowd or don’t fit in the atmosphere at your reach schools.

@frazzledazzle My school is going to be participating in the Science Bowl for the first time this year and my Science Research class always crushes the State Science Fair. Last year my project was super lame but this year I’m aiming for first place in Biological Sciences & Engineering.

Dude if you think you want to go to Cal Tech and you want to major in engineering then you should look up the 3+2 engineering program they have with Bowdoin! Maybe it can be your gateway in-- then again, getting into Bowdoin is no piece of cake either. I was looking into their 3+2 engineering program with Columbia but I don’t think I’d do it-- Bowdoin is like 28 minutes away from where I live and I’d like to get out of here haha.

How does one study for science competitions? Like this Oceans Bowl thing is coming up soon and idk how to study

My class selections for next year are approaching, and I still don’t know what to take. I have to take Calculus 3, but I don’t know what else to take. I can choose 3-4 out of these classes: AP Economics (macro & micro /semester), AP Physics C (could be 2 if not enough people sign up), AP Comp Sci A, AP Comp Sci Principles, AP Psych, or AP Lit/H English 12 (I’m not sure if i should go back to honors because of workload, but I’m doing well in Lang and I like to read books). There are so many options, and I want to take them all!!! Its just highly unreasonable to do that.

You all have class selections much earlier than me. We get recommended for certain courses sometime into quarter 3, and then we choose from there.
I’ll probably end up going with AP English Lit, AP French, AP Econ, AP Chem, AP Calc (AB/BC, depends on which one my teacher recommends me for), a mandatory gym class (I might try to get it waived so I can take AP Psych though), and band.

Going to try and finally get working on my weekly APUSH notetaking. I’ve been procrastinating all week, and tonight was my only free night until the due date and I haven’t fully taken advantage of it… Time to get on it!

is my school the only school where it’s not allowed to do calc bc without doing ab?

@cliffnotes mine is like that too I find it weird that some people have to take ab first

@DaEmmJay23 If you REALLY can’t decide, just cut all the AP classes that are unrelated to your major. That’s what I I kind of did, and it’s dramatically reduced my stress level

@raffle yeah I go on here and see people asking whether they can take Calc BC after finishing Pre-calc…here calc ab is a mandatory pre-req. You can’t even come from Math SL and go on to BC at my school

@Cliffnotes i feel like that pace would be wayy too slow for me Im glad my school doesn’t do it that way.

@snowfairy137 it might vary by school. b/c here our calculus teacher makes AP Calc so hard that IB Math HL is considered easier than even AB. although I wish I could take BC this year just so I could take HL senior year.

@cliffnotes I had a great Calc BC teacher who taught at a reasonable pace and was a great teacher and person. He has a 100% pass rate on the AP test (normal public high school) and I got a 5. There’s no reason Calc BC needs to be hard, espcially after Calc AB.

@cliffnotes It’s not necessarily the pacing. The teaching is great and everything but he likes to give AP-style tests with no test corrections and everyone fails.

Is the first semester of calc bc the same as the whole year of calc ab? That’s what everyone in the class says now but idk
