High School Class of 2018

Is anyone else getting hit with some pretty bad seasonal depression? I can feel my grades dropping.

@neptuna Ugh I feel you there, its the dreaded slippery slope again.

Third Quarter is absolutely brutal for me. Always has been, it is really hard for me to stay motivated after having so much time off and doing fairly well the first semester. Not having any long breaks really also burns me out really fast.

When you have 420 points and 2018 visits…Deal with it B-) cues dank memes

@neptuna Same here. And to add on top of that I’ve been forgetting to take my anti-depressants.

I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and is having a Happy Hanukkah if you celebrate those holidays! I had a great Christmas! I spent a lot of time with my family and got wonderful gifts from Santa Claus (aka my mom): bluetooth earbuds, L.L. Bean boots, makeup, a Fischer Price toy phone, and an iPhone 7 - my first cell phone!

I saw on here that a lot of people on this thread are either URMs or twins or both. I personally am neither, although I technically am an Irish twin. My sister and I are both born in the same year. I am of French-Canadian, Dutch, and English descent and am a Canada-USA dual citizen.

@frazzledazzle any reason you got a toy phone??

@frazzledazzle same on the phone question! but that iPhone 7’s pretty cool. did your mom want to emphasize some contrast between the phones or something?? it’s so cool you’re an Irish twin though!

I took APUSH last year, so I I can definitely relate to the APUSH comments. But the apush stress does wear off once the test is over though. maybe use apstudent.com for vocab–there are 1000+ terms, mostly with short definitions?? there’s just an overwhelming amount of resources online.

At my school, APUSH is the AP students avoid because of the sheer workload (in homework form) that makes it difficult. interestingly, we have APUSH for sophomores and WHAP for juniors, and more sophomores are opting for non-AP world history, for that matter. APUSH course focuses on one country, which honestly doesn’t have a very long history (compared to China. for example) which allows the course to be really comprehensive.

I honestly love 3rd quarter! 2nd quarter had me dying once december hit. My motivation is up because it’s a new year and I follow through with me desire to do well. The same thing applies for quarter 1, but the even quarters are when I rely on my previous grades and am more inclined to slack off

I guess I’ll take the likes as a yes! :)) I did find the U.S. News Path to College Scholarship:http://www.usnews.com/education/scholarship?int=schol-finblog

Also, if you search Chegg scholarships, some more will show up. You just need to put in some information and it will show you scholarships that you can apply for. A good portion of them include essays, so choose wisely.

I’ll keep posting more, as I see more.

Also, just a tip I’d like to share:

Once we get to the point where we have to start writing our essays for our college apps, a good prompt to write about would be the “Why School X?” or the “Why This Major?”. These prompts allow admissions officers to see that you did your homework (a.k.a research) on the school and/or your intended major. It also shows high interest (especially for your first-choice) and that you actually took your time to write the essay (instead of using one of your other essays) as the prompt is meant to express the uniqueness of the school itself and how’d you fit.

Exams are coming up in January. It’s like Happy New Year…Happy birthday…enjoy exams…

@snowfairy137 My mom likes joking around with my sister and I.

@bubblylaugh It’s especially fun to be an Irish twin with my sister right now. Her birthday’s tomorrow and mine is a week from tomorrow.

Guys, I have a question:

For the Harvard “secondary interest”, can you choose anything that’s offered as a concentration?

Another tip: If your school district has Naviance, then there is probably a tab that will take you to a list of local scholarships that will likely be less competitive.

I wish we had Naviance. I’ve heard so many good things about it.

@kassh4 Naviance is only useful when your school district actually frequently updates your info, rather than doing so once a year. :)) I would say the best things about it are the scattergrams that actually show who from your school got into a certain college with their GPA and SAT/ACT score.

Also, shoutout to Bozeman Science for helping me save my grade in AP Chemistry. I actually understand what he’s teaching!

Can someone explain the application process (aka common apps, early admission, etc)?

@cprepster18 I think this is a good place to start: http://money.howstuffworks.com/personal-finance/college-planning/admissions/college-admission.htm
Explaining the whole college admissions process is a pretty exhausting task as there are so many factors associated with the process. I would say to definitely start researching about it. This is likely how most of us came to know what we know now about the process itself. If you truly don’t know where to start or are just getting into the game, we’ll hopefully do the best we can do to help.

Thank you!

One of My Friends: 2016 was the best year ever!
Me: :expressionless: :)) =))

Mood at Beginning of 2016:  <:-P B-)
Mood Now: :)>- :(( :frowning: :-t

In all honesty, I’m not that optimistic about 2017. I didn’t even make a New Year’s Resolution. Oh well, may 2016 burn in hell! :))

@ak2018 My school just started with Naviance, but of course I had an appointment the day my guidance counselor set all the juniors up with accounts 8-| I’m getting one set up after break though. That’s also when I’m going to ask him about my GPA and class rank for the Hamilton scholarship haha
